Been looking at this camera for a while now. Still trying to decide between this and the (cheaper) TZ7 or TZ10 Lumix cameras or even the new ZX3. Must admit I'm confused by the reviews I've read - I keep swinging from one to the other...

HX5 seems to have many comments about 'soft' pictures and excessive noise reduction.
TZ7/10 seem to suffer from poor low light and battery life.
ZX3 is lighter and smaller.

Sweep panorama and 1080i video are very tempting, but not if the pictures are poor.

burnep1 - as you have one, how would you rate the picture quality? Thanks :)

The picutres are all very sharp in my opinion. You are not going to get the same level as a dedicated SLR, but I have had a number of cameras and this does take some stunning shots. I also looked at the TZ10, but the battery life had me a little concerened.
The sweep panoramic feature is truly amazing, some really amzing shots that are so easy to do.

I have to agree with that but the two killer features for me is the 1080 video which plays back flawlessly on the PS3 and the twighlight and low light pictures.

Highly recomended.

Buy this and you'll be locked in to expensive, dedicated Sony MemoryStick memory; that alone would stop me buying. With the excellent Panasonic TZ series out there why go for this?

1. Takes SD cards.
2. Sweep panorama. Low-light shooting. 1080 video.

Thanks - that's a relief.
Not after the same as an SLR, but have found many new cameras have poorer picture quality than my 5 year old Sony DSC-P100 5mp.

Thanks. I did check the spec on the Tesco site and it only lists MemoryStick Pro Duo. I know Sony has finally bowed to the inevitable and is making its latest cameras SD compatible but no one seems to have told Tesco on this one! One less reason not to buy a Sony.

I'll admit that I haven't looked closely at this one but I do find that Sony generally tries to charge a premium for its brand and includes some pretty mediocre cameras in its range; Panasonic no longer charges that premium and offers some great cameras at competitive prices.

Another standout feature that the HX5 has is HDR, The camera takes two shots at different exposures and merges them to give a picture with detail in the shadows and no highlight clipping. It really works!

I bought my camera in USA, and my model also has GPS. However, no mention of it in the Tesco model, so it may be USA specific.
