Sony KDL-40EX401 40" LCD Full HD 1080P TV

Rich, vivid colours and excellent motion performance characterise Sony's BRAVIA series of televisions. The Sony BRAVIA KDL40EX401U 40” TV ably demonstrates this with a sleek, bold design and a screen big enough for a very large living room.

Full HD 1080p ensures the picture is beautifully crisp and detailed when you're watching HD TV channels, Blu-ray movies or playing games, and the KDL40EX401U has a 24p True Cinema mode to ensure that you can watch films in all their 24 frames-per-second glory, as the director intended. To make movies look even better, Cinema Mode offers two different profiles to reproduce an authentic cinema experience at home, using unique film-like textures, and adjusted colour and brightness levels.

For day-to-day viewing, Sony's BRAVIA Engine 3 processing system ensures colour tones are true to life, contrast is optimised, and detail is reproduced faithfully. The BRAVIA's Ambient Sensor automatically detects the brightness and colour temperature of the light in the room, and optimises image quality to offer the best possible picture for your environment.

The KDL40EX401U BRAVIA has great sound to match the rich picture, using Sony's S-Force Front Surround system to create powerful, punchy sound, through invisible speakers hidden in the television's casing. The additional Clear Voice mode automatically boosts voice frequency bands and enhances poor quality voice recordings to produce crisp, clear dialogue, even at low volume levels.

This BRAVIA television has an inbuilt Freeview tuner, so you can access all of the free to air terrestrial channels without the need for a separate set-top box.

Four HDMI connections mean you can connect all of your other HD sources, including Blu-ray players, games consoles and HD cameras and camcorders. USB functionality allows you to plug in any USB device and enjoy films, photos and music on your television via USB playback. The universal remote control has BRAVIA Sync, which allows you to control your entire home entertainment system at the touch of a button.

If you have a camera with GPS, that geotags all of your photos, the Sony BRAVIA KDL40EX401U 40” TV will allow you to retrace your memories by displaying a world map onscreen showing the locations of all the photos you have taken on your travels.

is this better than the samsung LE40C580?

No. Don't get me wrong, the Sony a decent tv, I bought one for my girlfriend's place, & the Samsung for mine. The LE40C580 has a better panel, better processor, better picture, better looking & build quality. See the review at http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/news/samsung-le40c580-le32c580-20100728791.htm .

I don't want to put you off the Sony, but if you get the chance to see both in the shop, you will want the Samsung. It looks like it has a £600+ price tag, with it's glass stand, metal rear cover, transparent bezel edging, & red pinstripe at the base of the bezel. It oozes quality. The Sony looks 'plasticky'. It's stand is fixed, i,e. the tv cannot swivel ... now that's cheap.
