The Sony KDL40S5500 offers Full 1080p HD Ready compatibility at a top value price.

At the heart of this 40" Full HD Sony LCD TV is a group of picture enhancements that makes for top quality vision. As you'd expect, the Sony features a 1080p, 6.2 Mega Pixel resolution screen with 24p True Cinema - for picture scanning as smooth as the movies. Little needs to be said about BRAVIA as its reputation for vivid colour, low noise and smooth motion precedes it. The BRAVIA ENGINE 2 featured here has four extra image processing stages and full digital signal processing. The result is superb contrast levels, natural, life-like colours and crisp detailing.

In terms of the sound quality, the KDL40S5500 uses the most basic Sony audio system. This does without the S-Force Front Surround and Voice Zoom of more expensive models but does still have a digital amplifier and Steady Sound. Steady Sound equalises the volume between programs and commercials for a more consistent and relaxing sound level.

From the company that brought you Blu-ray, you can not only expect the best picture compatibility but also the right selection of sockets to connect it all up. Clearly, Sony understands HDTV, which is why this new 40" 1080p Sony LCD features three HDMI sockets. The Sony KDL40s5500 also includes the full range of analogue sockets you'd expect including two SCART, component and PC inputs.

Other fantastic features include a USB socket and Picture Frame mode. Simply load up your favourite photos and show them on the TV - just like a, very large, digital picture frame! Smartly styled with Sony's usual subtle touch, the KDL40s5500 makes a tempting choice.

This is with a 1 year warranty. You can also ring John Lewis and get 5 years warranty free as they will price match it. Both stores have low stock as this is selling really really well.

On top of this, if you price match with Richer Sounds at John Lewis you may get them to include Sonys £100 extra off if you have a TV that can be taken away with it (any TV will do - see http://www.johnlewis.com/jl_assets/pdf/sony/Sonytc.pdf).

Hope this helps someone!

Other thread from a few days ago. Has the scappage scheme finished?
#2
No need for a second thread on this TV and the JL price match. The original thread is enough.
#3
John Lewis will only price match IN-STORE with other stores.

Price matching does not apply over the phone unless you are calling a store directly (call centre don't do this), the richer sounds store will also have to be within 5 miles of your John Lewis or it will be a no-no.
#4
The Richer Sounds price is INSTORE only. They will match as I rang up and they agreed to match. And the matching is within 8 miles. Hope this helps someone, even if it is only one person :)

The other thread was also at £549 - this is £50 less. Furthermore, you can use the scrappage scheme thro JL and in theory get the telly for £399.

Matt.wild,

Thats fantastic, Thanks

Blatant repost just looking for rep! The other thread is still live and there's no need for another. Cold! :x
#7
wouldnt you rather buy it for RS, Even though you pay upfront for RS's extended warranty of not used, you get ur money back. The warranty covers accidental damage as well, which is not covered by JL. And accidents happen with masssive plasmas!!

If you say so. Rep of a net kind doesn't bother - just trying to help out

I haven't seen this in another post, so thanks for posting!

I have just spoken to Jonh Lewis and they say you get £50 for a sony TV below 46" when you trade in your old TV and up to £150 off for a TV from 46" upwards. But I see some people saying they got £100 off this 40" TV. Can someone please clarfy the confusion? Thanks in advance.
#12
Have a look at this:

http://www.johnlewis.com/jl_assets/pdf/sony/Sonytc.pdf

And tell me where it says £50 for small tellies and £150 for big ones. It's £100 for anything over 26", period.

edit: I apologise for sounding so bolshie. JL's pdf is so vague as to be almost misleading. Apparently it isn't as simple as the JL website makes out...
#13
I'm very annoyed - this is the perfect TV for me - except it doesn't do pixel-to-pixel mapping, so it's a pain to use with Media Centre PCs, like I have. No way to defeat the 2.5% overscan from HDMI sources, apparently... you pay all that dosh and they throw away 2.5% of the picture!

Looks like instead of paying £400 for 40" of Sony I'll be paying £550 for 37" of Panny.
#14
aw shame - JL at Trafford Centre and Cheadle have none in stock (interestingly they said they'd received an email about these particular TV's just this morning)
RS at Deansgate, Liverpool and Cheadle have also sold out - gutted!

Great post though thanks - will keep an eye on it in case any more come in stock, fingers crossed!

This seems awfully difficult to do for something that JL may simply say in a week "No".

That's not correct, but neither is the advice from John Lewis in the previous post to yours. From Sony's website:

"If you choose a model of 46” or larger, you will receive £150 discount, a model of 40” will receive £100 discount and a model between 26” and 37” will receive £50 discount"

Defo time limited and as said in the original post, stock is limited. They can look around the UK however and source in stock as they offered me a telly from Basingstoke to be shipped to me at the price above.

For me even @ £499 and 5 year warranty is pukka, if you can persuade them (some will manage, i'm sure some won't) then it could be as good as £399 for the TV, even better!

As for the £100, JL will follow what they say on their website. If they don't, find your local JL online and use their contact store via email option and they will email you back and price match.

See:

But it doesn't say £100 off either on that page...So when I phoned them and said exactly like you, both the online JL and the Kingston store, london, were reading from their documentation and that's what they quoted me, as I said above..I'd like it to be £100 off TV below 46" because I want to go for the one advertised here.

Noghar & whitelily, don't worry I was told they are getting them back on 21st September (Kingston store, london). So keep an eye on them.
#19
nice one thanks!
#20
John Lewis Leicester told me they are out of stock now oh well thanks anyway
#21
thanks rgayabintboujdir - RS also mentioned they're bringing in their own scrappage scheme on Saturday and as a result may be raising some of the prices of their TV's. They weren't sure if this model would be included
#22
I have managed to book a TV and get it reserved for a price of £599 - £100 scrappage= £499.
It would be a good negotiation tool if some of those lucky guys who managed to get this for £399 to post a good quality receipt. So that i can take to the manager of JL and ask for the same price.
Thanks guys for this real; keep up the good work

Kingston would be dead handy for me, and I'm getting a V+HD box on October 5th, but that 2.5% overscan is a real killer for me. What's the point of a 40" screen if it throws that much image away? Weird!
#26
just been to RS and they will start to do the Sony's TV scrappage deal from this Saturday. However, the guy was saying price of Sony TV s might go up!! I am keen to get a better version (W5500) which is currently £735 which would cost £635 considering £100 off. will let you know how it goes.

just it worning to those who want to negotiate with JL, do it now otherwise RS might raise their prices from this Saturday.

The store must be within 8 miles of the John Lewis Store. They will effectively price match a bricks and mortar store. The item must be on display with the sale price in addition to being in stock.

You sure this doesn't do 1:1 pixel mapping!? I have the older U series 40" 1080p model, and that looks perfect. with 1:1 mapping, so would imagine this would be the same.

Can you not compensate using driver software? ATI catalyst lets you over/under scan in increments.

Like I said originally, stock is short - no doubting that. Richer Sounds obviously also do it at £499, thats still something to bear in mind if you want the telly and an extra £50 will get you 5 years warranty which they'll refund if you don't use it...

also note that all Sony TVs automatically have 3 years warranty with Sony and not 1 year!

I've the same issue. I need a TV that will display a PC image in 1080P via HDMI.
If you read the manual for this Sony, it claims 1080P compatibility via PC Input (Analogue 15 pin D) but not via HDMIs 1-3. So even if 1:1 was an option, and it doesn't mention anything about scaling, the manual says it won't do 1920x1080 via HDMI !
Via HDMI (for a PC) it lists 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x768, 1360x768, 1280x1024.
I'm wondering if they've made a mistake in the manual and got the HDMI and Analogue charts switched :? ?

I went to the Sony centre in Westfield Shepherds Bush today and asked to see one. Big, thick, ugly, no digital sound passthru... Do u know, I think it's a big lump of third rate Sony crap and we're paying for the brand and the marketing as usual. Yes 40" is BIG but there's so many compromises... I'm going to go for the 37" Tosh from Amazon. Size is not everything... as I'm always telling the wife.
#33
Oh and no there's no mistake about the PC input or the overscan. Check AVForums. This cheap yes but it's cheap for a reason... It's just not as good a bit of kit as the tosh listed five days ago...
#34
Went to JL yesterday to try and pricematch for £499. Had a phonecall today from JL saying Richer Sounds instore price was £599, so they will match that (then -£100 scrappage). Just considering whether to get this for £499 or the 32" model for £380...this is Jl in Milton Keynes btw

I am trying to negotiate price matching whilst JL store is out of stock. Can you please asssist by giving me the name of the person (or any other form of evidence) you booked your TV with, because at Kingston store I was told they could not book and reserve the price MATCHING RS price until they receive the TV set in the store...whereas if I understand you correctly, you were able to do that. TIA
