It's for noise cancellation.

I believe that is the noise reduction hardware.

They are noise-cancelling headphones and that 'lump' is the active electronics that will need a battery.

The noise cancelling feature should be mentioned as it is a very positive point and makes these even more hot.

[DELETED spec, somebody did it shortly before I did]

Purchase some new Sony "Active Headphones" and you will not need purchase a set of Noise Cancellers. Man my headphones are load!

They should simply operate in a passive mode when the power's off.

If you're really interested the manual can be downloaded at http://pdf.crse.com/manuals/2888749221.pdf

Just what I was looking for. Hot and ordered!
Thanks - I love this place!

Thanks OP, second purchase today. Not sure if I love or hate this site!
#25
Thanks needed some new ones :)

Does anyone know if you get noise travelling up the cables with these? I bought a set of Sony HPM-82 for use with K800i mobile phone and it's really annoying hearing a sort of faint knocking whenever the cables from the ear pieces touch anything. A friend of mine says this is often the case with the (cheaper) in-ear type of headphones.

Anyone know how these compare to the similarly priced Sennheiser CX 300 headphones?
#28
surely with that big battery holder hanging from them theyre going to be tugged out your ears?

I have had the sennheiser cx300 and the sonys on the other thread. To me they were pretty much the same but the cx300s had slightly more mid range and the sonys alot more bass.

I have ordered some of these based on the performance of the other model, which was cheaper so am expecting these to perform. Fingers crossed!

Good deal - voted hot & ordered.

Reviews rate it as so-so generally, but at this price, it's worth a punt.

From your first post above one would infer that the Sony Active head/earphones you were referring to were so good that noise cancellation is redundant. After reading the product descriptions on the items you linked to it seems the only thing special about them is the head/ear bands provided to help keep the buds to your head.

Making sure earbuds stay in your ear doesn't mean that outside noise can't get in and so you can't really compare those Active ones to this Noise Cancelling one :)

If your logic worked I would have the best earphones ever by picking some cheap earbuds from Poundland and superglue them to my ears :-D :santa:

I got mine yesterday - I haven't used them too much yet but they certainly seem to sound pretty good for the price.
