£349 is the best price available for this great camera so the Quidco's a big bonus.

#2

#3
BUYER BEWARE-- AWFUL COMPANY. UNRELIABLE, DON'T ANSWER THE PHONE, DONT PHONE BACK WHEN THEY PROMISE.

FAILED TO TURN UP FIRST 3 TIMES AND HAD TO TAKE 4 DAYS OFF WORK WHEN THEY EVENTUALLY TURNED UP AT THE WRONG TIME AT THE 4TH TIME OF ASKING

Easy come, easy go - out of stock in all stores again (they had it in one or two when I posted)...

Bestbuy have been brilliant! I ordered the Sony nex-5 dual lens kit on 18th December for delivery today which arrived today.
This deal is not v good. I paid as follows:
£549.99 - top cash back £82
- Sony vat back £81.91
= £386.08

I am intrested to see how many people get the cash back with quidco and TCB
#7
I managed to snap one up at the croydon store yesterday (last one). They were showing out of stock though. Might be worth popping down to your local best buy if you don't live too far :)

Tried getting pcworld/currys to price match this but they wouldn't because its a different colour to the one best buy are offering haha. First time shopping at best buy and overall a good experience.
#8
I know Panasonic TZ10 is a lot cheaper, but is this worth getting over that?
#9
This camera is in a different league. It's competing with the low end of the DSLR market, not the compacts. It also features movie mode that you could probably film movies with :)

And in other news, this is now HOME DELIVERY so that means you can use that Quidco!

£349.99 - 10% quidco = £315... Despite pushing me strongly towards bankruptcy - ORDERED!
#10
So what kind of case do you need for this?
Would you generally take the lens off when in transport?

Thanks.
#11
I suspect you'll get model specific cases for this. Generally people leave the lens on to prevent dust from entering into the 'guts' of the camera. Only take it off to swap between lenses. Pity HUKD doesn't allow for bumping threads, I think this should be much hotter than it is!
#12
I'm in two minds about this, mmm... I mainly use my camera at concerts but this won't fit in my pocket lol

yes if you want DSLR picture quality and FULL HD video. But zoom is only 3x not like panny 12x lol
#14
You can get these official sony cases:

soft case:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-LCSBBDB-Alpha-Carrying-NEX-5/dp/B001PKUUE0

harder case:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-LCSEML2A-18-55mm-F3-5-5-6-attached/dp/B003LV0J1U/ref=pd_sim_ce_3
and this (required)
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-LCSEMB1A-Alpha-NEX-5-Camera/dp/B003LV0IYS/ref=pd_bxgy_ce_img_b

price is a bit ridiculous for the 'proper' case.

I can't vouch for the company (never used them), but there are far cheaper options out there:

Do not use if you are hoping for the Quidco. They track, but then decline. I know from bitter experience. Don't know about TCB, I don't want to try and then get stung again!
#17
I luckily bought this on the 24th Dec when the VAT deal was still on = £349.99 minus quidco £35 - minus VAT £52.12 = £262.87 BARGAIN !

Quidco tracked within 30 minutes no problems

They still have this in stock online http://www.bestbuy.co.uk/product/1000133018/sony-cybershot-nex-5-compact-system-camera-18-55mm.aspx?ref=AW&loc=HotUKDeals&awc=2533_1293915514_872db2c94e450ed972b9a16e22f19ce7
Obviously the VAT deal has ended but still a good buy

Mine was also delivered yesterday, again no problems with that or BestBuy

If you want the official case for this then the best price I could find was Jessops - online they have a 20% off code. You can either order online or click and collect and pay in store, that's what I did and again good to their word and no probs. I will check for the code and update in a mo
#18
Jessops code is BAGS&CASES20. This will give 20% discount.

I think it expires around 7th or 8th Jan

Saved me a bit so hope it helps someone else

Surely this is a better deal
£349 is cheaper than you paid, and if tcb tracks then £315 much better?

he got two lenses rather than one

How would you compare this to the Sony alpha DSLRs going for £250-300?

It's probably similar in picture quality and the DSLR will give you much better access to non-automatic modes (eg, there will be switches, buttons and knobs on the body to adjust settings rather than going through menus).

However, the DSLR is considerably larger and has far fewer 'whizz-bang' features. For example the NEX-5 has a heap of automatic modes that to all sorts of fancy things to improve pictures in non-ideal situations. You're entirely on your own with most of that with a proper DSLR.

Extraordinary example: the NEX-5 has a mode where it takes 3 photos in low-light at a high light-sensitivity setting. This normally has lots of noise which it counters by combining the three photos into one.

Oh, the NEX-5 also takes full HD video with full auto-focus. That's something the DSLRs aren't quite up with yet.

I really love the concept of this camera. I use DSLRs all the time and was keen to play with one of these, so dropped into a jessops. Unfortunately I lost interest in the product as soon as I picked it up, it looks fantastic and the feature set is nice but it just feels wrong in my hands, its like it is made for small hands. Just beware before ordering, it is a very small and compact camera, if u have big hands it can feel ackward. Hot vote for the price.

I believe your problem might be with the delivery company, and the bloke that works for that company, that delivers to your area.

Thanks, might go play with it at Currys before I decide.
Thanks!

Hi, something you might like to know about the "Full HD" on this particular camera.

Although the file is 1920x1080x50i, the actual footage is shot in 25p, so moving action 'judders' on playback on TV.
#27
Back in stock for home delivery!

Just placed my order.

:3
#28
how are users finding barrel distortion on this lens.

its pretty damn high!
#29
Anyone tried price matching with Currys?

I just had a play with it at Sony Centre, guy wouldn't budge form £480 or £460.

I'm a complete noob with lenses, but it took some time to focus while I changed zoom, is this normal?

It uses contrast focusing - that's different than SLRs and can be much slower, especially in low light. You should have some luck with PC World price matching, but of course then you wouldn't get the £35 quidco cashback...

Still waiting for mine! Ordered on the 29th and it's only due to arrive tomorrow, not so impressed by that!
#31
Just ordered on on behalf of my parents - 15% Quidco at the moment too

Has Quidco tracked?
I just ordered mine! :s

Do I need the 16mm lens too? Where is the cheapest place to get one?
#34
I'd suggest that the 16mm lens would be seen as a bit of an unusual item to purchase in SLR markets. The reason it was made was to allow Sony to provide a tiny camera with low depth that was up around the SLR qualities.

I've just played with mine today and I'm impressed, especially with the low-light capabilities. Quality is very good, easily on a par with the Nikon D40 it replaces. It also has a host of special situation modes that, unlike every other camera I've ever had, I will probably use some of. That includes modes that boost the noise reduction through taking multiple images and includes HDR modes. I'll also be popping into a Sony shop with a HDMI cable to see if it really CAN create 3D panorama images!

At less than £300, this has to be a no-brainer!
#35
Oh, anyone who's bought one, there's an unapplied firmware update on the Sony site which gives some extra features which may or may not be of use to you...

http://support.sony-europe.com/dime/downloads/downloads.aspx?site=odw_en_GB&f=FW_NEX5_V03_WIN&m=NEX-5
#36
good! I ordered mine, quidco tracked at £52.50 - hopefully I get that!

Anyone ordered and don't need there Best Buy points? They can be transferred over - you need 1000 for them to become useful. I would be really grateful, I need 650 more! (£1 = 1 point)
#37
Is anyone having trouble ordering this? Every time I try to go through the checkout I get to the "verified by visa" part and put my password in like normal which gets accepted but then I get an error instead of an order confirmation, I've tried two different debit cards and a credit card. It's getting on my nerves now!
#38
^ working fine here, try making a new account - or I reckon its out of stovck.
#39
I tried a different account but it made no difference, must be out of stock or they have decided enough people have used quidco!

I emailed the customer service but I expect no response whatsoever and so far have not been proven wrong!
#40
One of the great things about this cam is that there are cheap adapters available (£30 Amazon) so that you can use your old Nikon, Canon etc. manual lenses, (obviously in full manual mode, no af, metering etc). Check out the Flickr groups for Nex5, some stunning images

sample movie:
http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/sony/nex5-assets/cablecar_1080_2.mov

From PC Pro review:
"That makes the NEX-5 the most accomplished SLD camera we’ve yet seen. Its stills are on a par with good mid-range DSLRs and better than the Micro Four Thirds cameras we’ve tested at high ISO, build quality is sumptuous and the HD video capture is far better than that of its main rivals. And with a price of fractionally under £500, it’s a bargain. If you’re in the market for a do-it-all camera with interchangeable lenses, this is our current pick of the crop."
