From CNET:

Conclusion
The Sony NEX-5 is more like a jumped-up compact camera than a scaled-down dSLR. The picture quality is in a different league to a compact, and features like the sweep-panorama mode and 7fps shooting are unique to this type of camera. But really it's set up for gadget-hungry newbies, and more experienced shooters could get very frustrated very quickly.

£472.19 - haven't seen cheaper anywhere else!

The 16mm pancake isn't an ideal 'first' lens according to reviews so you'd be looking to spend close to £200 on the 18-55 (or similar) to go with this.

dpreview have very thorough review covering both the NEX-3 and 5.

The NEX-3 with dual lens kit was £399 recently and NEX-3 with 18-55 £320.

The 16mm is perfect for street photography and much more usefull than the 18-55, imo. You also have a very small camera and are more likely to take it with you (the 18-55 lens is rather big). Combine this with a 50-200 and it will probably cover all your needs.

BTW: just noticed you need to click on "5 new from £472.19" to get to the amazon offer. Perhaps OP should mention that or else people will complain.

Thanks for that pet2000 - I haven't used one of these so was just going by what I'd read in reviews and on forums - you're right that with the 16mm lens the camera is a lot more likely to be used.
I didn't think a 50-200 was available yet - do you mean the SEL 18200 (18-200mm)? I've not read any real-life reviews of it but if it performs well it would be a good match with the 16mm.

The NEX-3 already has HD video (720p) the NEX-5 gives 1080i; you do get an infra-red remote with the NEX-5 and the body is differently shaped (some find it more comfortable to use).
I guess if you're gonna shell out up to £650 on additional lenses you'll want the camera body to match them.

Seems very wide for street photography to me. Something with an equivelent of 50mm (30mm with the crop factor on the NEX3) would be more typical. at 16mm (24mm equiv) anything vaguely portrait will require you to jam the camera in your subjects face and lead to distorted unflattering features.

No doubt a fun lightweight lens/body combo. But I wouldn't want the 16mm as my only lens in the 'normal' range

Peronally went for the NEX-3 with both the 16mm and zoom lens as a kit on Play when it was £399.99 last week just waiting for them to get the stock in though!! )o:
