Cheapest this excellent 'SLR class' camera has been by a large margin - next best deal is well over £400.00.

Very impressive reviews.

One of the world's lightest interchangeable lens cameras
Sony has taken a radical new approach to camera design with the NEX-3, eliminating the mirror box and viewfinder optics found in conventional SLRs. This means you get an interchangeable lens camera that offers a class-leading combination of low weight, compact size, and SLR-class photographic performance. In fact, thanks to its low standalone weight and trim waistline, the NEX-3 is one of the lightest, most compact interchangeable lens cameras in the world today.

New, easy-to-use menu system
The main menu is completely intuitive so you won't have to go scrabbling for the manual every five minutes. It features six clearly labelled icons that can be selected simply by rotating and pressing the control wheel. Inside, standard scrolling menus provide quick access to settings for shooting and playback functions, as well as a host of other preferences and camera settings. The wide-screen format of the LCD monitor also makes it easier for you to read the display so you'll be able to find the text and icons you need straight away.

Built-in help guide
The NEX-3 guides you every step of the way. A popup window appears each time you select a mode or you scroll through menu items with the control wheel. This window contains helpful information on each item or function to help you take better pictures without fuss.

These simple on-screen guides make the camera brilliantly easy to use. They also make navigation completely clear as you'll always see which functions are in use at any time.

Shooting tips to help you boost your skills
Built-in shooting tips can help you get the most out of any given shooting situation or mode selection; whether you're a beginner or a more advanced photographer. As well as tips on particular types of subject and scene you'll find advice on general photographic techniques. You can access the entire library of shooting tips via the Camera menu so you'll always have a complete photography tutorial on hand.

High resolution Sweep Panoramas
Imagine you're standing in front of an incredible, immense view and you want to capture its scale and grandeur. Just choose Sweep Panorama from the Shoot Mode menu. It's beautifully simple to use: just press the shutter button and sweep the camera from side to side, or up and down. The camera will take a series of photos at high speed and seamlessly stitch them together into a single panoramic image of breathtaking beauty, with all the resolution and image detail you need for large-format printing.

Background defocus to make your subjects stand out
The NEX-3 features an iAuto mode which automatically sets the best exposure values and Scene Selection modes to give you the optimal settings for each scene. What's more, it combines this full-auto convenience with a Background Defocus Control function that lets you enjoy one of the biggest creative advantages of interchangeable lens photography - the ability to defocus the background to make your main subject stand out from the scene. Just press and rotate the control wheel to set the level of background defocusing you want - it's easy and intuitive because you can confirm the level of defocusing on the LCD monitor in real-time.

720p High Definition movie recording
Not only does the NEX-3 offer you SLR image quality but it (and its sister camera the NEX-5) is the first Sony interchangeable-lens camera to offer movie recording. And High Definition recording at that. Thanks to its high-speed, low-noise sensor your pictures will be sharp and your movie soundtrack will be clean. Once you've shot your HD movies, in MP4, it's quick and easy to post video clips onto your blog or video-sharing websites.

Rich tonal gradation and true-to-life colour
The NEX-3 has a powerful new 14.2-megapixel Exmor™ APS HD CMOS sensor which allows you to take DSLR quality images with rich colour and realistic detail. This sophisticated sensor is not only the same size, but it delivers the same performance as those used in Sony's acclaimed α system digital SLR cameras. So, whatever you're shooting you can feel confident you'll get true-to-life colour as well as clean, low-noise signal output and ultra high-speed data transfer.

High resolution LCD display
The camera's large, tilting 3-inch Xtra Fine LCD widescreen monitor has LED backlighting and a stunningly crisp high resolution display so it's crystal clear for you to see your subjects and review your shots. Viewing and focusing is also made easier by Sony TruBlack technology, which cuts reflection and glare with a special anti-reflective resin layer, as well as anti-reflective film. So, however bright the weather, you'll be able to see vibrant colours and deeper, richer blacks.

Rich realism made simple
Auto HDR mode allows you to capture evenly exposed photos even in the most challenging lighting conditions like sunsets, backlit cityscapes, and other dramatically lit scenes. It achieves a super-realistic range of shadow and highlight detail by taking three exposures in rapid succession; one to capture a normal exposure, one to capture shadows, and one to capture highlights. The three exposures are then digitally combined into a single stunning image that's saved along with the normal exposure.

Wont be as good as DSLR for many reasons , but if you want the slightly smaller size and point and shoot like ease these are for you..

Gosh, well spotted, I did a quick search before I posted and the ones I found seemed to be around £430 to £480. I would still prefer to deal with Amazon, rather than Play, but its interesting that Play have it for the same price.

Great price i have to say, but the reviews are a bit mixed as its a first attempt at a smaller micro 4/3 camera. Im gonna keep on the look out but hot for sure.

It's as good as DSLR when it comes to picture quality, the difference is in viewfinder - it's electronic but very hi res, and obviously it's way smaller than regular dslr and therefore more handy. I'll be swapping my Alpha 700 for NEX5 when price drops down a bit.

No, this isn't micro 4/3, it has a full APS-C sensor and the reviews I've read rate the photo quality as pretty well on a par with most other conventional £400 SLR's, but in a much more compact body and with very impressive HD video recording.

Extract from 'Tech Radar' review:

The NEX-3 is as compact as you can get for a camera that houses pro features. It's surprising then that at the heart of the NEX-3 is the APS-C sensor.
This is the same as what is found in Sony Alpha range of DSLRs and is a bigger sensor than that found in other cameras of its type.

The dual lens deal is probably a better buy as it comes with the pancake lens.

The pancake lens sells separately for £219!

So £349 for the camera plus zoom lens on amazon, or £419 for camera plus zoom and pancake lens!

If any one is very serious about there photography and thinking of going over 400, I'd recommend thinking about the Nikon D5000.

I'm sure this is a great camera, but its easy out grow and get out of date pretty soon

this camera isn't aimed at those who are serious about photography, its for people who want more than a compact, but not quite need the advacned functions of a dslr.

this is a hot price! few weeks ago the cheapest i could find for this package was £419!
#13
A good price, but the reviews are mixed. You also get quidco with Play. dpreview.com is lukewarm, basically saying that it is a great idea, just not executed as well as it could have been. They also say it has a problem with overexposure and that it may be best to wait for the next iteration in the series.

Personally I think its a great idea but I cannot get round the problem of it being one seriously ugly camera.

Agreed, the small form factor makes the pancake lens essential imho. The ability to add zoom lenses should be seen as a bonus.

Don't forget to google '£6 Amazon voucher for £1'.

Good camera.

Yes, it is the same sensor size as in the Sony Alpha range. (However, these aren't as good as Nikon or Canon or Pentax, imo).
The real difference is in the size of the camera. You loose a lot of DSLR facilities with the NEX but your camera will be much smaller (not the lenses, though, they're huge in comparison to the body).

I have the similar NEX-5 and it's a cracking camera.

It's the same size sensor found in most entry level SLRs but in a very compact body so you will end up taking it with you more than you would a full DSLR. Down side is limited lens choice and fewer 'in body' features but personally I was sick of missing good photo ops because I couldn't be arsed to drag my D80 everywhere with me.
#22
This is mirrorless, you can't fit standard Sony Alpha lenses on it.

Personally I'd much rather have the pancake lens as the bulk of the zoom means you may as well get a small DSLR with optical viewfinder.
#23
expensive for a glorified point and shoot camera - the dpreview article is an interesting read.

It's a bit vague to say "as good as DSLR" since the DSLR range is quite wide ranging from entry to professional.

Much of the image quality is also determined by the lens and the NEX is somewhat on par with entry level DSLR lens, however far from the professional or even mid-range.

So in response to the orignal question, is it "Like pro?" - no.

*dual lens deal posted earlier is much better deal IMHO
*Play.com started this deal(s) first and Amazon just mirroring the price (as usually does)
*good for people who dont need longer zooms as these are HUGE on tiny body (so 18-55mmm lens is MAX),otherwise its purposeless.Mind you this long lens is ~900GBP.

not voting as dual lens is better deal

so damn tempted. Maybe the wife will take the new TZ10 off my hands?

I thought the review was excellent. In fact I've yet to read a bad review for this camera.
#28
Surely having a 18-55mm lens on this defeats the compact argument.
#29
I read every one of those specifications, and all I kept thinking was 'gimmick'

A used D40 and 18-55mm would be a better buy, and when you want another camera/lens you'll see a good portion of the money back.

This thing will be worth £60 in three years time.

tell her the tz10 its a better camera and your having to downsize to the nex3... hahaha
#31
this is a good camera, however, if you want a dslr get a dslr.
only get this if u want the more compact option with a APS size sensor.
#32
I've got the NEX 5 (which has a better build and higher rez video) and it's brilliant. Amazing low light performance, even 6400 asa is totally acceptable. Good video and pretty good lenses. It's very small and the screen is excellent. I only have one camera and this is it.
#33
this camera is perfect for the market it is aimed at, but those who want something more professional or advanced will find the menu frustating, as most dslr have dedicated buttons for changing quick options, with this you will have to go into the menu (sometimes a few levels deep) and select them.

but the HD video recording, HDR and panoramic shot makes this really tempting!

Have to agree - they can cut down the size of the body a lot, but quality lenses are always big beasties.

Eventually this sort of design will push traditional mirror-SLRs out of all markets except the really high end, but the viewfinders still have quite a way to go imo.

No, its not like a pro level DSLR (Canon EOS 1 or Nikon 3). However the results are comparable to an entry level DSLR.

Though it is a new sensor, soon to be seen in the new Alpha 33 & 55 models and loks like a good improvement on the old chip.

I've already got a Canon 30D, but would love one of these to muck around with my growing collection of old manual lens (via an adapter), with small body, largish sensor, focus assist (via magnification) and inbuilt VR these look ideal.

You can use A lenses with an adapter but loose AF and some other functions.

I have just got a NEX-5 and to be honest the DPReview test nearly put be off buying it. Their main gripe was the user interface which, in my opinion is not as bad as they made it out to be. You need to think about the NEX cameras as compacts with DSLR quality rather than a small DSLR. As susch they are VERY good and selling by the truck load by all accounts.

Don't quite agree, I think what will take over from traditional DSLRs will be cameras like the Sony A55 and A33 with fixed mirrors.

4 out of 5, WOW! These are the real experts, it must be good gadget then. Is it any good as a camera, though?
