I saw this somewhere on the net last week and got around to ordering one today,

I ordered the the 504/1002 SONY NV-U52C for £149.99 at Argos in Leeds but instead received as a 'substitute' the 504/1253 SONY NV-U82 which is priced at £249.99.

http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/5041253.htm

I paid the £149.99 so it was £100 cheaper than in the catalogue

Told a friend and he got the same at Altrincham also know this has happened at Huddersfield and Blackpool branches too, so it looks like its Nationwide.

Its a got a XXL 4.8" screen and comes in a Orange box with Speed camera warning sticker on the front (as these are included for 1 year) so I suggest you request to view the 504/1002 and see what model comes out, I know they are getting more stock in on Wednesday but I dont know if the order will revert to the cheaper one then.

I suggest you request to view the 504/1002 before buying and see what model or colour box comes out, Its in a Orange Box like in the pic.
- Mark5211

******PLEASE NOTE : THE CHEAPER VERSION NOW COMES IN A ORANGE BOX - PLEASE MAKE SURE IT IS THE NC-U82 MODEL BEFORE GOING AHEAD AND PURCHASING *****

Its a 4.8" screen but remarkably slim only 2cm weighs about 200g - 230g in my opinion and comes with a soft carry pouch, no mains adapter you have to charge it through your usb port although you can buy any universal mains adaptor, worked straight out of box and you ahve to go on sony site to download speed cameras which is free for one year.

They have them on display at all Halfords and Sony Centre's if you need to check the sizes out!

Here's a review I found of this one:

What I like:

Superb screen, mount that would stick to ANYTHING
What I don't like:

No speed limit display/warning, battery lasts not much more than 1 hour - always take the car charger.

Review:

I have owned this (UK version) for 2 days. The screen is excellent (set the brightness to maximum in the menu). The "sticky gell" mount is superb - it would stick to ANYTHING without leaving a mark (on my Honda Jazz, it sticks to the dashboard like a limpet - it takes all my puny strength to prize it off!). Keep a cloth (I use a glass cleaning kit) handy to clean the attachment area. Without the cigar lighter lead attached, it looks like it came as standard with the car - real neat and classy. The battery only lasts an hour, so always take the car charger.
The default route setting of "fastest" takes you miles out of your way to keep to the major roads - select the "shortest route" from the menu for sensible routing. You can request to avoid motorways. The literal computer will add a few additonal turns to cut off the odd corner to save a yard or two, but otherwise gives an excellent, sensible route.
Downloading the speed camera data (1 year free) needs at least 2 PhD's (I only have one, so took me ages). Expect to go around in circles for 20 minutes or so (SONY take heed - TERRIBLE site).
Contrary to the prof. review, the nice lady does not speak the road names; for major roads, the A/B name is spoken, (eg "turn right in 100 yards on the A354). You have the option the show road names on the map (got them all right pronto). The display shows the road name you are currently on and the name of the next road at bottom left.
Amazing how it shows the names of small pubs, cafes, major premises in our little villages (cafe JemAndI, Saints and Scholars cafe - just down the road). Cafes, chemists and petrol stations are all shown. Major premises such as large car vendors, museums etc. are shown and are a useful landmark.
If you decide to detour from the nice lady's instructions, she calculates the new route with adequate swiftness - no pannicky "do a U-turn" (unless you are in a supermarket car park - when off-road she assumes you are on the nearest public road).
The kit comes with a pouch for the main unit but you will need a carry case for the total kit- disply unit, mount, car charger and cleaning cloth (I use a spectacle cleaning kit) to keep the attatchment area (and therefore the stick gell mount) clean.
There is no mains charger. You can charge from your computer with the USB lead (only when your computer is switched on?). Best to get a mains charger - I have a universal charger which suffices (you need a charger of 5.2v with the central pin + [most universal chargers will cover this[)
Just wish it told me the current speed limit with warning beeps if I am exceeding it (help keeps your licence!) - I think the TomTom does this.

In summary, GREAT! Really pleased with it.

Regards Hugh

This will surely depend upon the store and it's servicing warehouse etc.

Substitutions are a bit of a lottery.

Reserve one of the cheaper model online for pickup tomorrow 504/1002 SONY NV-U52C

When you get to the store ask the cashier or customer service if you can view the model before purchasing (even if they say its an alternative model still check its the SONY NV-U82 before buying)

If its a SONY NV-U82 then you can go ahead and purchase.

Just picked one of these up from Telford Central Argos.

Got the NV-U82 for £150 very impressed with it.

They had another 2 in stock, and the store manager was only too happy to explain how good a saving I was getting.

Just got to sell my Garmin 300 and my PDA with TomTom on now, can't justify having 5 GPS devices (also got a Garmin handheld and a Nokia N95).

Is it as good as your other models?

Ive got one reserved till tomorrow but pretty undecided at the moment.

Not as simple to use as TomTom, but much nicer screen, it will take time to get used to it, much the same as the Garmin took getting used to.

Voice direction are a bit too polite for my liking, but voice quality and reading road names is nice.

"in 200 yards PLEASE turn left" you don't have to say please !!!

Definitley worth £150

Any Advantages/Disadvantages over tomtom garmin navman etc?

- Not as quick to get a lock as garmin
- can't add your own points of interests
- Speed camera warning s give no indication of where cameras are, just says watch your sepped.

+ Screen is lovely and clear
+ Excellent holder
+ Sound quality is very good

In conclusion, worth £150 wouldn't pay £200+ for it.

I know that a lot of stores got new stock when I was phoning around last week. However, all the new stock was the 52.
Its easier to phone stores, be honest, and ask them to check if they have an 82

Does anyone know what the difference is between the 52 and 82 apart from the size of the screen, Id prefer the smaller 52 screen but dont feel like paying £129 or £149 for it when the 82 is available for the same price and has a rrp of over £100 more.
#33
Just went into Argos Redhill Surrey, ordered the u52 and that's what was brought to collection. It appears it doesn't work here :-(
#34
The 82 is a slimline version. Bigger screen... but thin.
The 52 is smaller (screenwise) but its fat...so its not any better to store etc.
