First deal...long time lurker. (Hopefully I'll get the format and picture right... )

Pretty much as title says. No idea if this thing is actually any good or not, just noticed it on the shelf in my local Sainsbury's and it seemed cheap for a satnav. I rarely use SatNav and have a TyTnII with the built in GPS for basic ocasional use - so I didn't bother buying.

I think it may be in store only... linky to Sony UK page for illustration.

I can't find it mentioned recently using the search and Google comes up £80-150.

Hope it helps someone... and goes towards some good karma for all the good deals I got off this website. :)

which is your local store please? and how many did they have?
#2
Please let me know where did you find it

ooops sorry. I knew I'd miss a crucial bit of info. :-(

It was Edinburgh Craigleith and there was only one empty display box (in an obvious place) on the shelf. Didn't ask if they had any more or whethr it is national or local.... They also had a Blaupunkt for 80 and a Binatone something for 70 quid. At least one box of each of those on the shelf too. (BTW, all prices minus a penny, obviously :-) 49.99, 79.99 & 69.99) Sony looked decent widescreen, etc. Blaupunkt had better/more maps (Western Europe vs UK-Ireland for Sony) and binatone looked a bit .... well cheap/plasticky dunno about maps.
#4
Amazing how a Binatone Sat Nav can be cheaper than a Sony Sat Nav, maybe worth giving the store you spotted it in a ring to see if they have any in stock at the stated price.
#5
is this better than a tom tom?

the sony brand makes me think it might be?
#6
Honest (and simplest) answer would be "I don't know". But I'd guess that it probably is not. TomTom user interface is renowned for being very user friendly. I tried TT and I do think it is very well designed as a UI. I never tried whatever software Sony is using, so can't really coment on that one.

Then again, I don't remember seeing a TomTom unit for that kind of money ;-)

There are some reviews on the web that seem to think it is a decent SatNav unit..(Conversely, I am sure there are some that think the opposite, but didn't really look very hard, just read the first couple)

Here is a rather exhaustive one:

I tried posting a link to a review but my post seems to be dissapearing as soon as I post it... Ah well.. you'll just have to google it, I guess :-) .

The U50 & u51s got quite a bad review IIRC.
#9
Sony have pulled out of the UK satnav market so don't expect updates, new maps etc.

Tomtom is a mass market device so you should be able to get updates for some time to come:thumbsup:
#11
I'd say it's very unlikely this is better than a TomTom. Worth a punt at this price though!
#12
These are pretty well made units. The only problem is possible lack of updates. Other than that... HOT!
#13
I have the Sony U92T European and its great. Better than a Tomtom. Nice size screen and I updated it last week through the website. I also paid an optional £20 to have Traffic Alert which is a lifetime subscription. Not sure if you can get it on this model though.
All my speed camera are up to date so for £50 I would jump at it even if its not updated you may lose a few speed cameras
#14
Damn hot deal!
I've got one of these. deffo worth 50 notes IMO. Nice wide screen and a very decent sucker thingy.
I paid £100 from Argos and thought that was cheap.
The speed camera update is a total mare to install and all really very frustrating. You'll end up ringing sony to get it sorted. Far too longwinded but once it's done it's done. Vista problems, register here, register there etc etc.
Had mine for a few months now and used it for the first real time in anger on Saturday. Drove from Newcastle to Warwick to Birmingham and back to Newcastle. All very easy. Showed up all the speed cameras and gives ya warnings etc. Never took a wrong turn once although at one point it did clearly send us into a housing estate over hundreds of speed bumps and back out the other end onto the same road we'd just left. All very confusing.
No complaints what so ever.
Mine also has maps for parts of Ireland, Belgium and France on it. Not sure how up to date these things are tho.
Feel some heat!

This is an excellent page on the thing

I got one of these from Halfords a while back, and I gotta agree that it's fab. I far prefer it to TomTom, and the screen is brilliant.
The only peculiarities I had are that sometimes the screen doesn't detect a touch, and that to enter a house number you need to search via roadname rather than postcode, but other than that it's brilliant.
#16
The U50 at least ran windows CE underneath, so you could possibly change the software on this unit also.
#17
Getting hot on here, tried four stores in my area and none seem to have any Sony sat nav's, some don't seem to stock them.

Voted hot anyway
#18
You cant run TOMTOM or others on here although it is WinCE as the GPS is locked by Sony, according to forums. If it were so then I would be hot footing it to put my TomTom onto this!
#19
Spoke to store and reserved one for me and the guy who sits next to me at work. Great.

Bad news is that they are the last two :whistling:

Hope other stores have them.
#20
none local to me ......
#21
I'd echo the screen touch thing. Mine has been ever so slightly annoying from time to time but hardly even noticeable really.
couple of things to note.
No mains charger supplied in box just the ciggy lighter one. I use my PSP charger tho and this works fine.
This is the number you'll need to ring for registering the speed cameras on the damn thing. 0800 1695 263.
I'd just ring it before you even try to register and let them walk you through it especially if your on Vista. Save you about 6 hours of pulling your hair out.
#22
Good price but **** satnav, maps arnt as accurate and its one of the hardest to use. if youre on a budget its a great buy though
#23
spoke to sainsburys customer care and they told me none of the stores have this any longer as they are dicontinued .

Are you referring to the Sony models? Anyone found any of the Binatone or Blaupunkt in store, if so does anyone know the model number for either? Got to check out the reviews before making a buying decision

#26
would anyone know the item number for the sony nv-u53 , would be very helpful.
#27
Hi there.

I am not sure what number you are after but I took a wee photo of the Sainsbury's label with my phone and the number above the bar code is:753-6714244-1-1-1. Is that any good?

I am not sure who expired the deal, but I wouldn't rush to give up based on some Sainsburys employee who couldn't be bothered to check... "no stores have any" strikes me as a bit of a sweeping statement :-)
I don't really mind...
#28
I rang head office today to be told there are a few still about in a few stores over London Not sure about other areas,Im in Essex nearest to me was south London etc well worth the trip for a £50 bargain Sony sat nav plus at moment I have 15% collegue discount not bad at £42.50 ,fingers crossed I get mine tomorrow.
Good luck folks keep looking;-)
#29
Probably irrelevan tnow, but I just went to the same sainsbury's last night and all the Sonys and Binatones are gone, but they had the Blaupunkt round one still on the shelf.
So that one is not a very good deal then, is it?
