The Bad Things:
From Amazon feedback
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-NV-U53G-Navigation-Ireland-Northern/dp/customer-reviews/B000VXXX5K/ref=dp_top_cm_cr_acr_txt?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1&customer-reviews.start=1&qid=1201302220&sr=8-1#customerReviews
The unit does not respond to screen input consistently. You need to touch the same area of the screen several times before the unit actually does anything. This doesn't appear to be a fault because the unit actually beeps to let you know your touch has registered. It just seems the unit is off doing something else more important. Sometimes this is fine and each touch will work, other times you will need to hit the screen two or even three times to get it to register. This wouldn't drive me quite so nuts if it wasn't a Sony - these people must spend millions on product development. If it wasn't for this flaw I would recommend it without hesitation. I would suggest you get down to a local shop and try the unit out. You may be happy to live with this - but give it a try first.

The Sony Web site is not setup to support the NV-U53G. I've tried to download the Speed Camera Updates, but in order to do this you need to go through a registration process (no big shakes) but you also need to enter a product number. The web site gives you instruction on how to find this but the instructions are for another Sat Nav unit and the menu you need to go through is simply not present on the NV-U53G unit. I'm sure this gripe can easily be sorted.

As a result of this I can't comment on the software supplied with the unit, I haven't used it.

Manual supplied with the unit is poor. It's the size of a small novel but only because it covers every language on earth. The actual content in English is minimal and doesn't go into any detail.

No case supplied with the unit - you are going to want to protect the screen so this is another £20 you will need to spend.

I had a look and couldn't find any real reviews on it worth linking to maybe I should remove "qualty" from my other post.
I'm not sure if there are any better sat navs for under £100 around at the moment but based on the price comparissons this is hot.
Not much time for anyone to find some decent reviews to compare with anything if they want some sleep before they go and try and get one though

Don't forget to register your unit with Sony, as you get a year's free speed camera alerts. If I were you I'd download the more recent version of Activesync for Windows XP as the version they ship with it seems a bit clunky. The registration process was absolutely fine - more trouble to actually get the PC to talk to the unit to install them, mind.

Apparently some units fail to pick up the time from the GPS signal - Sony will replace if they do have the problem.

Also, the unit is compatible with the PSP power supply for charging - charged mine with one yesterday.

Funny you should say that as mine won't connect to my PC. When I get home tonight I will get the latest version of ActiveSync and see if that cures it. Thanks.
With regards to the time issue, Sony have been replacing with the upgraded 73 model, which is a shame as my time reads correctly!!!

Mine wouldn't connect until it was fully charged, and even then it was a bit of a struggle. In Vista I just gave up - in XP it finally did work with the new version of Activesync installed.

HI....

I have just bought one of these and to be honest think the touch screen is abit of a pain,, I find myself pressing an Icon more than once just to get it to work...

I was wondering though do you know if you have to pay for Map Updates or are they free like on the TomTom???? I had a quick look on the Sony site when I registered and then clicked on Maps and it said £42:? So is there no free updates for it or have I just missed something:lol:

Thanks
Stu
