Incredibly versatile Windows Media compatible Sony 8GB Walkman video MP3 player finished in White. Featuring a 2" LCD high brightness screen and the facility to easily drag and drop most popular music formats, video downloads and photos.

Yes I know this has been posted Nth number of times, and yes I know that it was £64.99 recently in black at Play.com, but now these cracking little players are hard to come by at such prices anywhere in any colour.

Never have I seen the white one at this price point (Black at Comet is reduced to clear at £79.99) and strangely the Pink 4GB is the same price point as the White 8GB at £69.99.

I had the 2GB black one when it was at that price error at Argos for £20, loved it, but wanted a higher capacity, really like the player in white with matching white ear plugs too...so my wife has had that black 2GB and I just bought this white one.

As I said not seen the white one this cheap anywhere and with 3.5% quidco makes the click and collect price £67.54, nearly as cheap as the Play.Com offer which has gone by the wayside, which was extrememly popular a deal a matter of weeks ago.

Hot or cold you decide on this far beating Nano killer, better build, better screen, £30 earbuds included and to top it all a fantastic sound chip in it unrivalled (just read reviews for the player)

Available in store or home delivery (home delivery is £5.95 however) the instore price is the real good deal obviously, but at least (currently) there are stocks of these out there.

Best sounding flash based MP3 player there is currently.

The drag and drop file transfer system is very useful. No software is required and it's very easy to get files from any computer very quickly. Cracking.

**bumped** it HOT, Great price

I had this in black for my birthday a few days ago, and i have to say its a brilliant mp3 player - excellent sound quality and so easy to use / add your music to (if i can do it anyone can!!) Voted red hot :)

Also wanted to add that we bought a pink 4gb version of this from sainsburys in-store yesterday for £29.99 (daughters bday present) which i thought was a very good price - lady at the till said the black 1 was also the same price, if you can get any!

Bought the black one from play a few weeks ago and am happy with it, but has 2 niggles worth mentioning. One the headphones are very short, if you want both earbuds in, then your top breast pocket is about as far as you can get with the actual player. No chance of getting it down as far as your belt. Compared to my Archos the highest volume is not that high, maybe I'm a little deaf but I find I like to listen on full volume. Aside from this very nice player and a good buy.
#7
The specification says that it doesn't playback MP3??? That can't be right can it?

Strange you mention that? Didn't you have the extension cord come with the headphones, I actually like you have the option of either a short or long cord. There is one short and one long lead from the earplugs, a lot of earplugs are designed like this as you are meant to put the short lead in the left ear, wrap the long end BEHIND your neck and then the other end into your right ear. Leave the cord dangling on the left there into either your breast pocket (without cord extension) or your left trouser pocket with the cord extension. No fuss, no cord tangle, and if you get stopped on your travels you can leave the buds dangling over your shoulders whilst you be sociable.

As for the volume wtf, damn you put the unit on full volume and it blasts your eardrums out with the supplied headphones, are you sure you have the same model of player here? Check your mp3 encoding is all I can say there.

Check in your box for that extra extension lead.

My only niggles with this player are as follows :

. Cannot create playlists on the fly (only from the PC)
. Doesn't do audio book or have an FM Tuner
. No customisable colours or menu design (although what a great menu implementation)
. No expansion slot

However besides these shortcomings, build quality and sound quality puts it in a league above other players, if you can live without these niggles. If you want an FM tuner, look elsewhere, perhaps the cheaper built NWZS618, same menu, cheap headphones and cheap build quality but has FM tuner, built for the youth market, or perhaps the Creative Zen being reduced to clear with the new Zen X-Fi being released.

Personally I only ever listen to Radio 6 (only station that plays alternative), FM doesn't have DAB, so radio tuner is of no use to me, sound quality is the most important thing to my ears as well as build quality and the size of a flash based player, so this player fits my bill perfectly. Only thing I really dislike is having to create playlists from the PC. Wish Sony would do a firmware update for the players for inclusion of that.

Notice now this is starting to get reserved at Comets, clicking on the rep buttons wouldn't go amiss :-P

No I posted about that pink one that is for the 4GB model NOT the 8GB model, same price point of £69.99 different storage size, the 4GB one is the NWZ-A816, the 2GB one is the NWZ-A815 and the 8GB one is the NWZ-A818.

Read my original post :)

It would only plug into a speaker dock that has a standard line input from the 3.5mm jack output on the Sony unit, the Sony has its own proprietary USB connector for data/charging.

Did you not get the extension with yours? it reaches to my jean pocket with this in, and yes you must be a little deaf, coz if i put mine on full volume it feels like my ear drums are gonna burst!!:w00t:

Precisely why I am very, very puzzled at these comments myself!

Increasing heat, useful information provided about this player and still no rep, whatever happened to HUKD community.

Bought this player from play when it was £75, absolutely brilliant. However, my headphones have died, well not died but they play at a really low volume, and after a certain point, increasing the volume on the player just has no effect. I've tested it with other headphones and they are fine. Do you think I could get a new pair, is this sort of thing covered in the guarantee? Bought it less than a year ago btw.

If you bought it for £75 then you must have bought it far less than a year ago, within a month if that! So I would get onto Play for a replacement, check their warranty though, some places palm you off to the manufacturer (Sony) after an initial 28 days. All depends on Plays warranty and returns policy.

I actually contacted sony, they said that I should get a replacement from play, but it was after 28 days, and it wasn't faulty when I bought it, so surely thats an issue for sony to deal with. May take it to a sony store in town, see what they say. Was well over a month ago though, 21st of march was the date that I purchased it.

I'm after an MP3 player to use for my Audio Books collection. I read earlier that this model was not for use with Audio Books. Is that correct? I know nothing about MP3 players! I have an Apple Shuffle and I find it useless for my needs (Audio Books).

The snag is Play.com are in Jersey so, as far as I know, the Sale of Goods Act (which makes the retailer responsible) does not apply in Jersey so you'll have to use Sony's guarantee instead.

Yes, that is correct as i stated, you would therefore be better looking at a Creative or Samsung flash based MP3 player for your needs.

Thank you for the reply and info! As I have no idea what to look for, is there a Creative or Samsung model in the same price range and what do you mean by 'flash based'?
Many thanks.

I have Googled MP3 and two that I came up with are;
Sandisk Clip inc radio for £30 and the Creative Zen 4gb at £46 plus PP. Are these the sort of thing?
#24
I reserved comet online this morning in white as per this post. When I got to comet they said they were giving away a free sony speaker with this model. They had a look about and then gave me a Sony SRS-NWT10M Portable Mini Speaker (17.99 at play.com). It plugs into the bottom of the player for portable audio - tinny but free. Player is much better than my 4GB creative zen which never inspired confidence.

Yes flash based meaning a flash chip memory soldered on the main circuit board inside the player, instead of hard disk based MP3 players such as the Ipod classic , Microsoft Zune or Creative Vision M.

You might shopping around get a clearance price on the Creative Zen 8gb for around 70 quid., yep here we go, new model with X-Fi sound technology is imminenthttp://www.amazon.co.uk/Creative-ZEN-8GB-MP3-Player/dp/B000V9IAYS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1219003321&sr=8-1 Not a bad player for the money, although some people have had problems with them locking up....so check out the reviews.

Personally I prefer Samsung t-10 series players if you want audiobook function, but you just wont get the 8gb of that for anywhere under 99 quid, just don't seem to be the offers on those.

I reserved click & collect and picked up before I posted this deal and was never offered such a deal, looks like it may be exclusive to your store, nothing online for any of the Sony models on clearance featuring a free speaker. Which store?

I would recommend any of the Cowon mp3 players for audiobooks. As they all tend to allow multiple books marks, resume, variable speed rewind and fastforward etc. In particular the iaudio d2 or iaudio 7 are very good for playing audiobooks. http://iaudiophile.net/forums/showthread.php?t=20823

No problem at all, that many players out there its a minefield of pluses and minuses with each player, if you are strictly a music lover and want a gimmick free player this would have been an ideal player for you.

Price wise, the Creative Zen may be your best option, stability wise you may be better shelling out the extra cash for a Samsung T10 player, or perhaps look at the Sandisk players, there was a bargain on a sandisk sansa e260 posted on here last week, if audiobook is your main function something like that may suffice.

It was Comet at the Arnison Centre in Durham. I got the last 8GB in white.

My receipt says ' 09 Free Sony Speakers' £24.99 and then a credit for -£24.99. The assistant told me there was a free speaker with that model.

Thanks for the post - I had a 2GB on back order at Play but I'd been waiting a week without stock.

Just for info. My Zen locked up last week. I went through the full recovery procedure but it is totally kaputt. I liked my Zen when I first got it. Against the sony it looks cheap and insubstantial. The Zen sound quality was fine, quite warm and bassy. The Sony has more clarity.

Glad you managed to get one, I wonder about that free speaker offer, might try going back with my receipt and enquiring. Anyone else had a free speaker offer....if so this makes it a uber deal!

Yeah I have the Creative Vision M 30gb as my main multimedia player, but for music I have to say the Creative is ok, but the Sony wins hands down for sound quality.

Not sure if the new Creative Zen X-Fi (currently not getting great reviews) is going to improve on Creatives sound, certainly their has been firmware problems and build quality is no better, or have they addressed the SD slot library integration with your main media library

I bought this last month from play.com and it is Amazing! The video and sound quality is immense and the battery life is decent as well. The only drawback is there is no mains charger does anyone know where you can get one from? All in all you cant go wrong for 69 quid

Got this mains charger for my daughter from amazon for her holidays. She says it worked great and fully charged her player in 2 hours. Good reviews from amazon too.

Hi everyone

I just went to comet and they had the A818W but for £10 more they had the NW-A808, essentialy they looked the same but some differences on the package for example the dearer one said 4 audio technologies rather than 3, even though I had no idea what it meant. Also it said I get 10 free songs from sony connect although I dont think Id use them anyway. anyway I haggled 10% off and got it for 72 quid, but Ive had a look online and for the life of me cant find out if Ive bought the wrong one.

Would anyone happen to know the differences between the two and whether I should stick with the NW-A808 or swap ot for the slightly (£2) player in the above deal (NWZ A818W)??

many thanks for the help

EDIT: after some research, I think mine doesnt allow drag and drop??? can anyone confirm so I can fire up the car and return it QUICK, I HATE Sonicstage!!
