Don't forget Quido
#2
I spent ages picking my new mp3 player... and a week after I finally get it... they knock over thirty quid off the RRP. Damn. Thought I had done well getting it from Dabs for 108 plus some Quidco when everywhere else was 114.99. Oh well.

Great player @ bargain price. Read the reviews.

Can some please tell me how to get iPlayer video files onto the damn thing. I have been trying unsuccessfully for 2 days now and starting to loose the will to live.

I have tried Dragging and dropping using Windows explorer but the file doesn't play (get the message of unsupported format on the player). Drag and drop using "Content transfer" gives an error stating that content transfer doesn't support DRM files. WMPlayer 11 gives the error that I haven't the right to sync file to portable device and Media Manager doesn't even show the DRMed file at all. The file I have been trying to transfer is the latest TopGear episode. What am I doing wrong??????????????????????????????????????????

I've never owned an ipod, but I've tried a few out and found them sexy on the eyes but quite underwhelming on the ears. The last mp3 player I had was a Creative zen (ok ish), and I've made do with my N95 8Gb for the last year.

This little Sony fella blows them all out of the water in terms of clarity and oomph. It brings the music to life. Even my wife (who does not have a particularly good ear for music, even though she likes a good song) loves it and wants one now.

Its easy to use and has a great battery life (apparantly).

I even plugged it into my PS3 for a laugh and they were instant friends.

If I didn't already own one, I'd buy one.

I download the i-player .wmv files straight to my PC (usually just the desktop) and I have set an auto-sync on Windows Media Player to automatically add any videos to the player that are less than 1 month old.

When I have watched the programme, I just delete the file from the desktop, and the next time I sync it automatically removes it from the player.

The player is great by the way. I am hearing layers of music that I hadn't noticed before.

Small gripes;

No gapless play

Can't create/edit/delete mp3's or playlists on the player

fast forward / fast rewind is not that fast (better if the track is paused first though)
The one from Agros has a slightly larger screen (2.4" instead of 2"). The one from Play has a radio. I think these are the main differences.

This also comes with a free 3-month trial to Napster (unlimted downloads). Normally this is £15 per month.

I have one of these and they are excellent. To play iplayer files make sure you select the option "for portable devices" in the download dropdown menu on the program page. if it gives you an error saying you dont have the right license to transfer the dloaded program onto your player then simply double click on it and media player will assign the correct one --> then just transfer over.

As far as I can see the Argos one doesn't have FM radio.

Are there any download restrictions? ie if you cancel the subscription are you still allowed to keep the tracks etc?

Not sure. It also has an option of burning tracks on to a CD. If you did that, you should be able to keep the tracks.

The £15 Napster monthly subscription is a licence fee that enables you to download to your pc and up to 3 devices that take mp3 files (there's millions of files). You never own any of the music unles you actually purchase it. And you can't burn to cd unless you purchase the tracks (I know, I've tried and my techie pals have failed to enable me to do this!).

Napster is fantastic for me as I am always wanting to listen to new music and most Mondays I'll download a few albums. I then end up buying only what I know is good (to my ears). I justify the monthly fee to myself as my own personal music tax - I pay enough 'real' tax to think that another £15 to be able to download and listen to mostly anything I want is fair enough (and it's legal). But I would think it's not for everyone - it is for me but I am a serious music fan/collector.

Best head to the Napster site for full details if you're interested.

So what happens to the tracks that you copy to your portable device?. If you cancel Napster, do you have to delete them?.

This isn't the answer to your question, but my Sony A818 (similar bit of kit, 8Gb) is fussy about file types, and files in mp4 format often wont play. I have used a (free) piece of software (VIDEORA) to convert video files, typically from .avi format. Use the simple (default) settings, works well.. Most times though I connect to PS3 and it allows me to play the .avi's on the TV (get 'unsupported file type' errors with some avi's though).
These Sony players are great, better than anything I've listened to. I love it more than my children!

In order for you to be able to listen to the tracks you have to connect your pc/mp3 player at least once a month. If you don't do so or if your subscription has expired then basically you can't play the tracks.
