I was looking for one of these a few months ago when places like PC World, Argos and Tesco were clearing stock. I have an older model and it is excellent, much better than an iPod, so this is the top of the range model which should in theory be better as well as having a larger screen.

Sorely tempted to upgrade at this price!

I bought this for the sound quality and it did not disappoint.

ipod touch murdered this still not a bad player

May I see the source that says the touch is better than this?

This is utter nonsense.... a fanboy pernaps?

Opinion (apart from yours) across the board is that the Sony is far superior...

I have owned the touch... but not this particular sony... so cant give my opinion on this specific model, so its based on the many reviews, but I have used sony mp3 players before and with the exception of the mid nwz series they have blown the apple ones away each time...

The great thing about the touch is the gapless playback though... other things like the lack of a proper equaliser make it a poor choice for the audiophile.
#6
i have owned both. if you want gadgets then go for the touch; but if you want sound quality then this sony is far better
#7
really good price . vote hot hot hot.
sony always gives better sound quality than apple.

most people really dont care about the sound quality people make the ipod touches sound to be bad when infact normal people really dont see a difference but what difference they do see is the app store better games the most reponsive touch screen on any player and much easier to use and cheaper every thing about the touch is better if u cant see that u must be crazy go to anythingbutipod.com if u want crazy people who dont like ipods to talk to the reason people dont like ipods is cause there so popular

I agree to a certain extent about iPods, the average guy in the street sees it as the pinnacle of MP3 technology, so that's great marketing. Yes the iPod offers a bigger screen and games through the app store. But for me, sound quality is king, the player sits in my pocket most of the time so it's all I want it for.

Last week I did a comparison with my older model Sony and an iPhone 3GS to compare sound quality. I've long maintained the Sony was better, and the 3 other people agreed it was when listened to same track on both players using my same Klipsch S4 headphones.

But at the end of the day, make your own mind up.

Seems a strange argument - Mozeley - yes the Ipod touch can do different things, but the Sony is a dedicated MP3 player so sound quality would I suggest be a little important.
Some of us want substance over style - Sony's sound quality is far superior - and that comes from someone who owns both Sonys,Sansa and Ipods, Iphones etc . I just don't believe in the 'herd' mentality - just because I own something, its not necessarily better than something else.

I think that the pure quality of the statement above speaks volumes for the Sony.
#17
Sony are all about the sound quality. If you want games, apps ect go for the ipod touch. I myself would rather stick with HTC as a phone and my Sony walkman for my music.

I have to say if you think this is better than the touch, because you want just music and video, why not just get the ipod classic? £50 more for a lot more space

Remember a troll is always a troll.

As stated I would much rather have sound quality on a music player than anything else, as that's what I will be predominately using it for.

A little on the small size for me, as i tend to stick with flac but a good price.

but if u wanted sound quality why would u get this fully featured player when u could get a 16gb cowon i9 for about £30 cheaper

Ipod touch is just a gadget. Great for apps and games but is useless at playing music.

Question for you, how does this compare with the sansa clip? I want an mp3 player to replace my sansa clip that my better half has "borrowed". Not interested in mp4, apps, widgets etc. just want a solid mp3 player with top sound quality. This is three times the price of the clip. Is it worth it? Cheers

Sony make the best mp3 players in terms of sound.

It doesn't do the good stuff like flac however the oled screen makes it worth the money.

Please reread my post before attempting to sound smart

So yes, the other features will come in hand from time to time.

a gadget that plays music though..... go for the sony if your after sound quality, I try to keep my gadget clutter down so i'm happy with an iphoine for day to day films, music and gaming and my sony for the gym-voted hot btw ;-)

Must say the sound quality on this is fantastic. i had mine a few months and got it for £99.97 when PC world etc were clearing stock.
Only thing thats annoying is the repeat funtion seems to have a mind of its own, may just be me though

For what it's worth I still use my Sony NW-HD1 bought back in 2005, never liked iPod even back then. My Sony still manages to hold around 500 albums and plays for about 20 hours in far superior sound to any apple, and is used for 2 hours every weekday on my commute, plus the sound quality runs rings around any Apple product.
Even though it is 5 years old I still would not trade it for an Apple. In short, if you want a quality product get a Sony, if you value style over substance and want to follow the crowd get an Apple. The choice is yours

Good deal.

The screen is fantastic looking being OLED and to be expected from a Sony, the sound quality is stellar.

I do have an iPod touch as well as an X-Series and my preference does lie with the touch overall, I use the web browser on it a fair bit (the one on the Sony is quite poor) and I do make use of some of the apps too.
#31
Glad this gets hot. I own a Sansa Clip+ 4G as well as this. I have used touch for a while too.
For the wifi and application sony is far behind apple.
For the video, OLED screen on Sony is better.
For the sound quality. As the X-series. The X1050 has the "best" sound in the flash memory mp3 players. Not "One of". Huge number of reviews on this around.
Sansa clip is amazing for the size and sound quality. For people just need music on the way. You can pick up the 8GB one for around 30 quids.
#32
I've had an Ipod Touch before, sold it within a few days as I found the sound quality poor. I ended up buying a 32GB Sony X series and it's one of the best buys I've ever made. The sound is top notch and video quality is brillant on the OLED screen.

Now Apple can stick there apps/games/etc - if I want to play games I'll do that on my Ps3 or Xbox, the same way as if I want to listen to music on the move I'll do it the proper way.........on a decent mp3 player, ie the Sony :)

i have the previous x series player and i love it. the headphones that came with it are unreal. my gf has an ipod and everything about it is terrible. The headphones that apple provide are below par and the sound quality just doesnt match. If you're looking for a new player, get this!
#35
Cold from me. I recently ordered a laptop wifi card from them which was posted on here, listed as new but was very used (still waiting for a refund too). About a week ago I ordered a portable radio from them which was doa. 2 orders, both a complete waste of time. I will never buy from these cowboys again.
#36
I've had the 1060 32GB for a while now and the sound quality is just awesome. Noise cancelling through the bundled phones is effective, but I've paired mine with Shure 102s and I can hear instruments in tracks that I've never heard before. Screen quality is the mutts nuts too - blows the Touch into the middle of next week. Big let-down is the browser, although the firmware update does improve it.

If you want a jack of all trades, buy the Touch. If you want a seriously good music/video player, this just cannot be beaten.
#37
The sony s638f/s639f is a much cheaper alternative to this - If you can find one for cheap!

No gimmicks, just a great mp3 player with brilliant sound (not as good as the x-series though) and decent earphones included.

The fact its smaller and lighter may appeal as well. The LCD screen should be more usable in the sun also, unlike the OLED screen on the x-series.

Hot Deal for this though - just presenting an alternative :)
#38
I've been using a Sony 8gb NWZ series for 2 yrs now and it hasn't disappointed me at all
Cheers :)
HOT as Kenya :)
#39
You cant beat Sony for sound quality. I think my Sony mobile phone sounds better than an iIPod Touch, I'm not a Mac hater I'm typing this on my IMac........I'll be ordering 1 of these , just give me10mins to justify it.
