these are great little players. i have the 8gb version, think i paid £70 for it off play.com. Awesome sound output and the organisation of the files are as good as the ipod. heat added, good price :)

Good find amibees, how do the sony compair with apple i have found a 2 gb refurb from apple.com for about the sme price but not sure which to go for..:?
#3
sony without a doubt over the ipod. sound quality is awesome on the sony and you get headphones with it that are like £30 seperate

definatly the sony. my brother has an ipod and the sound quality is amazing through the bass headphones.
#5
Thanks bearman, just one more thing, how do they compair in size and build quality?
#6
i think the sony has a lot classier look, and its a sony so the build quality is excellent. always thought my old ipod felt a bit 'toy-like'. size of the sony surprised me, alot smaller and very thin compared to what i thought it would be like, but the screen is still really good size and quality for watching movies etc

@ukmonkey.....I have the 2gb version of this from the Argos price mess up a couple of months ago

As Bearman says, the build quality is second to none, I don't think there is a classier looking and better built flash based MP4 player on the market. Sound and build and headphones supplied compared to an Apple Nano are second to none. Headphones with the Sony are £30 equivalents.

Saying that though, the Sony isn't without its disadvantages, as a MP4 player it has fantastic sound and a fantastic screen, if all you want is to play MP3's, view photos and watch videos its great, and as a rival to the Nano it is by far preferable...if you prefer your MP4 player to offer more "gadgety" features though than both the Sony or the Nano you are better looking elsewhere.

The Sony unless they upgrade the firmware, menu system is not customisable, you can't have wallpaper (It does display album art embedded into MP3 ID tagging) and probably of most importance doesn't have an FM Tuner (but neither does the Nano) .

If an FM Tuner and other features are important to you, then you are better off looking at either the Samsung or Creative Labs flash based players instead. If memory expansion is important, look at the Creative Zen.

So to summarise...

Pro's.....

Build Quality, Style, Sound Quality, Headphone Quality.

Cons....

Lacking FM Tuner, No Menu Customisation, No Memory Expansion,

If you just want a 4gb flash memory player with room for expansion SDHC slot (You can pay more for built in flash8 or 16gb, and soon 32gb Zen!) then this is just a fiver more at Amazon.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000V9IAYI/ref=s9subs_c2_at2-rfc_p?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=0T11NRMGRJ6PSQC460T8&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=139042391&pf_rd_i=468294

Bang for buck with headphones included quality wise the Sony beats this, but for expansion capability, customisation and FM Tuner, this would probably be the better deal for you, just look into upgrading the headphones at a later stage.

The refurb Ipod you were looking at wouldn't have included an FM Tuner either, the only way to get radio on an Ipod is to buy an external FMTuner remote.

Rep gratefully appreciated, thanks.

im looking for one with a line-in so i can record, i dj and would like to record gigs when im out and about, any7 ideas?
#11
Excellent mp3 player - similar was reviewed on the gadget show a few weeks ago and sony won hands down on sound quality
#12
I'm interested in this Sony but would really like an FM transmitter. Does anyone know if there are any simple add-ons to get radio, or would I be better going for a Creative Zen? BTW, all I want is an MP3 player than plays songs, podcasts and radio - I'm not interested in photos, video etc. Any help or advice really appreciated, with rep thrown in.

Can you simply 'drag and drop' files onto this mp3 player and what does the file type of the video need to be in order to play and do you need to resize the video to view properly. thanks
#14
you can just drag and drop files onto this. video is mp4 (that i have used) but this is not a player for watcing video imo
#15
Seems expensive to me :?

This is an excellent player. I bought a refurbished model from play.com a month or so ago for £38 and have been highly delighted. The sound quality through the supplied headphones (as others have said worth £30 on their own) is far superior to any of the MP3 players I've owned before. I agree that it's not for you if you want to watch a lot of videos (I have an Archos A500 for that) but the video display although small is superb and ideal for the odd movie or TV episode on the bus or train. The often criticised Sony software is simplicity itself to use and is more than adequate. Battery life is superb. This a no brainer at this price for a quality item.

I got the argos one @£19.99 ,the battery life once charged from usb is tremendous( so is your avatar ciaozammer)

Do u think this will be compatible with macs?

i put some music vids on mine, thought it look superb !

films however... it wouldnt be that amazing as the screen is just not big enough to enjoy it completely. not saying the screen is small however just films look better on a big massive screen:)

Below the glass shelf you can see the sub woofer
You can also place the speaker dock on top of the sub woofer, then it makes one big pyramid!

This is an awesome mp3/mp4 player, mine came today, I have owned nearly every ipod ever made, none have sound quality like this.

Ipod's are just a fashion accessory, get one of these for a bargain price while you can!
