So would I - have another Walkman, but despite telling her I didn't want an ipod, the missus "upgraded" me to an ipod for my birthday !

The ipod is lying in a drawer as she couldn't take it back and I don't have the heart to sell it - I just wish communication was a 2 way process sometimes.

ipods hav terrible sound quality compared to sony players and the new shuffle is jus stupidity
#4
This is a good mp3 player but its quite quiet even at the maximum volume.
#5
Weren't these 69.99 with £20 cashback offer through Sony before Christmas? Might want to see if that offer is still on. I can't recommend this one as I just remembered I bought it for someone and the speakers were terrible and it has no line out function for playing on a hifi or in the car.
#6
I've had one of these for ages - best sound quality for the price by a mile.
Beats i-Pods hands down.
I paid a lot more than £75, too :x

It's a health and safety thing, I know on some mp3 players you can disable it somehow

Got one of these at Xmas for youngest daughter whan cashback was on.

Speakers are what I expected from something this size - pretty tinny but ok for her needs.

Not sure about the line out though - she just uses the a phono jack to connect headphone socket to her hi-fi & this works fine. - I didnt know MP3 players came with specific line outs :?

All in all very pleased with it.
#12
It's not a specific line-out, it's a mode where it goes louder at a fixed volume and EQs in a different way in order to go through an amp rather than through headphones. With anything that doesn't have a line out mode, you have to turn up the volume really high on the player and the hifi/car stereo and it lowers the quality of the output drastically as well as making it click, clip and pop.

Good find! Need to upgrade hubby's 4GB version and this is ideal! Does anyone know if wireless headphones from earlier NWZ-A826K model would work with this model?

EU Directive......some people get around it by downloading firmware from outside EU i believe

Very tempting...

My 16Gb iPod Touch's headphone socket isn't working properly, and Apple has quoted £200 to get it repaired (or, rather, swapped out for an alternative 2nd-hand model).

£75 for this Sony model sounds like a better idea than trying to get the iPod repaired...

this is also a good deal

Decent little player and better quality sound than Apple gear, but this machine is vastly inferior to the previous S series models (S639/S739), which were metal, had intelligent playlists, Sense-Me technology and, most importantly, built in noise cancelling. Sony have definitely reduced quality to appeal to a wider market and, IMHO, that's not what Sony are about. Even the flagship X Series has been discontinued after 9 months, with no high end replacement in the pipeline!
#22
Good deal. FAR better than the crappy (none existent !) "quality" of Creative or Achos, only Cowon is equal quality to Sony. I have a 32gb Sony, a Cowon D2 and a Cowon O2 otherwise I'd have snapped this up for work.

Got a 16gb Sony Walkman about this time last year and i have no complaints. I actually prefer it over my Ipod. Good find.

Creative are one of the best when it comes to audio quality.
#25

Yup, it was 2 years old, so out of warranty.

The Apple Store was nice though. They suggested they could knock 10% off the price of a brand new replacement iPod Touch, if I wanted. So basically my iPod Touch now had next to zero value to them.

Uh-huh... I think I'll pass on that one.

Based on the horrendous customer service /false information sony put out in the recent cashback offer on their n series walkmans I wouldnt like to have to claim on the manufacture warranty or deal with their customer services at all TBH.

When it comes to Sony - buyer beware their customer service / warranty support is horrendous.

Do yourself a favour put the money towards and 3g iphone, best bit of consumer electonics I have ever purchased.

What a brilliant idea!! Why spend £75 on an mp3 player when you can fork out £819 over 18 months for a mobile phone with p1ss-poor sound quality?! Why didn't anyone else think of that... I was actually thinking of buying a new family saloon, but I think I'll get a Challenger tank instead.
