is it drag and drop mp3 able?
#3
Just reserved one in black. Would love to know how it compares to the Creative one that Amazon were doing for £89.99 a while ago. I've always liked Sony's stuff so hoping it's all good.
Anyone got one of these, what do you think of it??
#4
Yes its drag & drop for MP3/4.
Using CloneDVD Mobile I get an MP4 conversion of 100MB per 30mins.
Headphones are excellent, comfortable with good bass + surround sound.
Charges via USB in around 4 hours, lasts charged for ages.
Unlike cheap MP4 players you can FF & REW + plays from last viewed.

The above is for the older NWZA810 model, you may have to skip the headphone comment as post below indicates.
#5
This seems like a good deal for a 8gb quality MP3/4 player, however its a bit of a mixed bag by the looks of things from a Sony point of view. It seems to have the same menu system as the NWZA810 and ticks the right boxes by adding an FM Tuner that the NWZ series lacks, however the headphones supplied with this are nowhere near the same quality as the £30 equivalents supplied with the NWZ series and for some reason by adding a FM tuner it looks a third bulkier and the design is a lot damned uglier.

Voted hot on price though.

So this is drag and drop then ? or do you have to put in a cd, etc.?.. good price , if it is.. thanks

Yes the same as the NWZA810 series its a MTP device meaning drag and drop compliant unlike the older Sonys. You can however still use Soundstage for transferring files if you wish, just not a necessity to use their proprietary software anymore.

In depth review of the device is here http://www.pocketables.net/2007/10/review-sony-s61.html

The NWZA810 is in a different league build quality and screen size is bigger, but doesn't have an FM tuner and bang for buck isn't nowhere near this price but a much nicer looking player. http://www.pocketables.net/2007/10/review-sony-a81.html

For that you would be better off getting a Samsung MP3, build quality is probably on a par with the S610 series but not as good buildwise as the quality NWZA810 series.

Have to say the red one does look rather appealing compared to the others.

If I was away from a computer, i.e. on holiday only mains socket, no car charger, no USB, how would I charge this?
#14
Any comparisons or reviews vs a Nano? How does the UI stack up against the Apple wheel?

Doesnt have the gyroscope screen "thingy" like the Touch which moves the pic landscape/portrait when you turn the device 90 degrees?

Does seem a great price for a quality produced 8gb device. I am tempted - help me choose this over an iPod!! :-)

Also, how come the 4Gb is £89.99?

http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/catalogId/1500001001/partNumber/5134627.htm
Sony 4GB MP3 and Portable Video Player NWZS616FB - Black.

Surely 8GB is more than 2000 MP3's? (The 4Gb is quoted at 2000 MP3's).

Thanks for any clarification.

I know this is going to annoy people, but...
*You should get an ipod.*
Why? Itunes is the best music application, PC or Mac (OK, I know its not perfect)
Great support for podcasts (negating the need for an FM receiver in many cases)
Easy to transfer videos from DVD (using 'handbrake' a free app)
With a Nano you can get the nike kit for running (its cheap too)
With an itouch or iphone, you have a great software platform, with lots of great apps in the pipeline.

If you don't want to get 'locked in' to the platform then encode your music to MP3 and purchase online DRM free MP3 e.g. through play.com.
New Ipod models tend to be released around september for christmas, so it may be worth waiting a couple of months if you fancy and ipod/ nano.
If you want the itouch / iphone, then wait a couple of weeks for the software 2.0 release.

Sony got left behind years ago, because they were content owners (record labels / film studios) which meant they crippled their products to prevent pirating. They are much better now, but the ship has sailed.
#20
Is it worth paying the extra £20 for the Sony NWZA818 over on Amazon if it comes with better headphones etc?
#21

Well it seems not. Thanks anyway, but if you read the thread it appears that the Sony's seem to be fussy about what can charge them. One guy has been trying to buy an expensive dedicated Sony charger.

Seems a good player but not much use to me if it requires a PC on almost every night charging it up and also having to pay for a charger on top. Another scam by the companies. Being away on my hols abroad would mean no computer.

If anyone knows of a deal on a real mains charger for this please post in the thread. ta

Compare the features of the NWZA810 Series compared to the Nano, including supplied headphones, build quality, sound processing quality and screen image quality I know which one I would prefer to own out of the two. And in fact I would even prefer the lesser quality built S610 here over the Nano. Apple players are overpriced, there are just the same free tools to convert mp4's for the Sony or Creative or Archos or Cowan.

Hi Cico,
I fancy this Sony over the Nano.
But where does it stack up in the range of Sony units? You keep referring to the NWZA810.

This NWZS618SF seems good value.

Which would you buy if you had none?

Thanks for you valued advice.

Yes compare the two reviews I listed earlier for both the 610 and the 810 series, the 810 has a marginally bigger screen, all metal body and USB port cover and headphones that alone are worth the extra £15

If however you are strapped for the cash right now then this is still a good deal, also its a no brainer if you need the FM tuner, a bit stupid on Sonys part to have their flagship flash based models without an FM Tuner and the cheaper ones designed for the youth market with.

£15 extra gets you an all metal body, headphones worth £30 but no FM Tuner....you pay your money..you makes your choice...build and sound quality (due to better headphones supplied) over an FM Tuner.....

Thats cool, thanks.

My primary need is for good quality sound via the aux in of my car - so its for the car, therefore headphones and fm dont really figure.

So I think I will opt for the NWZA810 (I am guessing the "8" is the GB capacity?).

Suggestions for where to purchase this? (apologies if already posted).

CHEERS,
Mark

Not quite the NWZ series are a815 (2gb) a816 (4gb) and a818 (8gb)

As Brewer posted Play.com have them for £75 delivered (guess that would be using the £5 off a £50 spend currently doing the rounds on here.

Rep gratefully and cheekily appreciated :p

There are lots of MP3 players which beat the nano on paper,
there are lots of phones which beat the iphone on paper,
but in practice they are not as good.
I agree this looks like a nice player, but if most people had a nano for a week, I doubt they would swap it back for this.

Too be honest I find a lot of problems with Apple, mainly the whole "fashion" over function not just with the IPOD but lets face it the Mac may be fantastically built but it has on overpriced tag with it.

The only advantage I see with any of the IPOD range over any other decent branded manufacturers MP3/4 players is with the hold they have on the market. With that there are plenty of peripheral docks.

However for the average user who wants a player for portability with decent sound quality and better build quality personally I advise people look elsewhere.

Even before the change over to MTP with Sony devices which was its only criticism, previous Sony models sound quality beat IPODS hands down and still do. Same with Creative Labs players, although the build quality of those isn't as good as Apple.

I think the end user has to decide what they want from a player, for me its sound and build quality....I dont need a docker or car adaptor for my player its used for walking or for the rare occassions I have to use public transport.

You may have a point here on the iPod, but I cant agree on the iPhone.

Many phones beat this hands down in practice (not just on paper).

I have used both an iPhone and a BB extensively for the last year. The BB beats it on almost every count, incl for voice calls, emails, texts, MMS (!!), Micro SD cards, etc. BB is Enterprise class, iPhone is Consumer oriented.

i brought the nwza815 version earlier in the year when argos had an offer on them at £20 , managed to get two in fact. not sure if they are the same earphones as the 818 but they look the same, over all the body is solid and looks and feels good quality, im attracted to the argos deal for the capacity, but after looking at the review i think i will hold out with my 2gb for a bit longer and wait for another deal, but if you need one now and money is tight then this is defo a very hot deal.
#34
Think this is the better deal

http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/206974/sony-nwza81sony-nwza818b-8gb-video-/

with the £5 voucher down to £69.99 - an excellent player.
As mentioned before this doesn't have the FM tuner - but the build quality is better and headphones are much better.

I have the 2gb (Argos £20 offer) and the sound quality is far superior to my 8gb Ipod - so much so that I'm selling the Ipod to get the 8gb Sony.
The only thing in the Ipods favour is the touch wheel - Sony beats it on sound (easily), drag and drop, battery life etc etc.
#35
Went for the £59.99 argos deal and collected it at lunch time. I did think about the other one from Play but I managed to pick up a set of the Goldring headphones through the What Hi-Fi deal a few months ago so the headphones weren't an issue for me.
Just had a quick look at the included demo video and its amazingly clear. Really impresed and cant wait to get home and start getting a couple of films on there. Speaking of which, has any one got any good advice on the best software for converting my DVD's into something that will fit on the Sony.

Yes mate I've got the earlier version (had several I pod's, this beats them hands down!) and I use the free 'Media coder MP3/MP4' version just changing the sound format for films to AAC (i think)

http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/device/mpx.htm

Might have to get another at this price - cracking deal!

Sony beat the Ipod for sound and video quality recently on the gadget show :whistling:

Hot deal...

Sony NWZ A818 is definitely a better player with much better headphones and it's only approximately 7 pounds more on play.com (74.99 cost minus 5 pounds voucher and 4% quidco).
