Yeah I'm at work and think our web filtering/proxy threw a wobbler. Got one reserved at Leicester St Georges. Dunno how many they have though.

Great price, great product - big update coming this year too
#6
Hi flamingcarrot, Could you elabourate on the big update!!! just reserved one. Hot from me...
#7
Read it could do HD but sadly it won't be able to do Freeview HD as the hardwares different. It can do HD for Europeans that use the same standard for HD but UK is switching to different one for Freeview HD. :(

HD won’t happen (in UK anyway). Freeview HD works with DVB-T2. PlayTV device is DVB-T. So unless they bring out a new device capable of HD – it's unlikely to be ever capable.

Cue the trawling of details about your viewing habits versus your spending habits & online interests into many spam-destined databases.

With some analysis of the data compiled, the information may even tell potential thieves when you are not at the address carelessly left in public view on your Facebook profile.

Major PlayTV Update Due Towards The End of 2010

Hi, Just wanted to let you know that the guys at Cambridge studios are working really hard to develop some great new features for PlayTV. The next update for PlayTV is due later this year but testing of some of the new features has already begun.

I don’t want to give too much away and spoil the surprise but a little hint to one of the new features is that PlayTV will have links to the worlds most popular social network site, Facebook. Other great enhancements to PlayTV and brand new features will also be included in the update.

As soon as these exciting new features are ready for you I’ll give you all the details here on the blog.

Hope you are enjoying your PlayTV on your PS3. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to add them and I’ll be back on here on Monday to answer as many as I can.

I look forward to getting this update to you later in the year.

It plays them...just not in HD. Could be part of the update later in the year? ;-)
#24
I keep going to order this and then thinking 'Do I actually need it?'.

I really don't!
#25
Cool. Been waiting for these to be on offer. Thanks
#26
Go back to my previous posts. PlayTV can't currently and won't ever likely to be able to display Freeview HD. Reason being is UK has used DVB-T2 where as rest of Europe has used DVB-T (ie same standard as current Freeview) so we, yet again, in the UK are getting screwed with the need for new kit.

Ha ha! :-D

I didn't know you were on here too! :p

Looking forward to next week anyway fella - should be a good game.......

Back on topic, the update is due late 2010 - I see fanpages has kindly furnished us with some details above.

Back in September 2009, the PSN Network Manager was answering a response on a 14 day guide, and series link recording and stated that:

"Mark Bunting and the Dev team are currently looking into these features for PlayTV"

Putting 2 and 2 together, I am really hoping that these two features will form a large part of the new update. PlayTV really does need a series link, to stop me forgetting to tape Doctor Who!

maybe the price crash is due to this?
could be a new and improved HD version on the way?

http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2009/06/19/playtv-update/ says that they've been working on making it HD compatible. Bit of an old post but it's still something they've said they were working on.

It supports HD in the rest of Europe already. It's just because we (the UK and BBC etc) decided to use a different standard. PlayTV is DVB-T and Freview HD is DVB-T2 and they aren't compatible.

Don't think this is a price reduction because of a new version as it would need new hardware for just the UK. Also it has dropped to this price many times before anyway. Worth remembering though Freeview HD is only gonna be transmitting BBCHD, ITVHD and 4HD at first I think.... And thats not even out till 2011 in my area so can't even receive HD yet.

Damn!! I bought this for £40 on Saturday!

Is it worth hunting for another one then taking it back to my original store? Hmmmm.

1p more in Gamestation - but out of stock online, might be able to get it in store though

Great price voted hot and ordered.

Already got a DVR but this will be a good backup in case I need to record two channels at the same time. :)
#35
This is probably a daft question, but does anyone know if you can back up recordings on usb stick? and does it have a power save/switch off in case you need to record late at night.
Cheers for any help.

Decent buy but i'd only consider one if they made one which is freeview HD

A couple of weeks ago when Argos were doing their PS3 bundle offer that included this Play TV adaptor I took the printout into my local Gamestation to see if they could price match.

The store manager there said that the current Play TV is now discontinued (hence stores trying to shift the current stock) and is due to be replaced by a Freeview HD version coming this Summer. He didn't think that the current hardware would be capable of supporting Freeview HD, so if you did want HD it would mean buying the new model.

Anyway for this deal this is still a good price, so heat added

I believe you can backup and possibly record directly to external HDDs and USBs.

Regarding a HD version I spose it is possible a new one will be coming but I would have expected Sony to have announced it if it was coming this Summer. It will need new hardware that's for sure but then that hardwares only specific to the UK so depends if Sony can be bothered making hardware just for the UK.
#38
Sony would announce it at E3 if there was a major update to playtv, that's in a couple of weeks.

i am personally hoping for an updated version that will accept a sat input and can work as freesatHD.

i am not holding out much hope though
#39
Damn, every store sold out within a 6 mile radius :(

Also, forgot to add, you can get quidco with pc world [email protected] thing.

http://www.quidco.com/pc-world/ 3.5% quidco.

http://www.quidco.com/currys/ 3% quidco.

Might be worth adding that to title :)

Short answer yes you can.

You move a recording to the XMB, then copy it to a usb stick/drive and play on another device of your choice.

If you have a timed recording for the middle of the night, the PS3 will turn on, record, then turn off again.

Hope that helps.
