Seen this at Currys Crawley and Redhill...Stock maybe limited due to it being ".97" but it should be nationwide...

DESCRIPTION:

Play TV + PlayStation 3 TV Tuner
PlayTV lets you record TV while playing games, and offers live television broadcasts to handheld PSP consoles via the Internet.

With PlayTV, you can watch, pause and record free-to-air digital television while you take a break from gaming, further expanding the entertainment possibilities of the PlayStation 3. The PlayTV Tuner, which plugs into one of the PS3 system's USB ports, is capable of showing and recording both standard and High Definition channels where available, and will allow you to record one channel while watching another. It features a programme guide which lets you view listings and schedule recordings for the following week.

If you have a PSP, you can take all these features with you. As long as you are within range of a Wireless Internet connection, Remote Play enables you to watch live television, access previously recorded programmes and organise your media library.

We have 2 of these at home and they are a decent bit of kit. After the update, they upscale the picture to HD and it looks really good.

The only downside is the quasi-series link they do. As BBC and other channels are fond of moving programmes 5-10 minutes either side, you have to keep checking the EPG, otherwise you'll miss a few minutes

Good kit, i have one myself but be aware PlayTV 2 will be out soon which supports Freeview HD.

Bargain for 20 quid though. Hot!

Picked one of these up when posted on here a couple of weeks ago at Currys for £22..47. Great piece of kit. Although regarding what was said above, check the thread out about HD http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/686078/sony-play-tv-22-47-reserve-collect-

if i get this can i record sky whilst watching another channel on sky??

No only freeview channels

Bought one of these yesterday from Game Preowned for £20. When I opened the box everything was brand new (ie the game was still sealed).

Tried it out last night and it looks a decent bit of kit (although I had a problem getting BBC1 and BBC2).

Picture didn't look very upscaled though, is there a setting you have to change to make this happen? And yes I did perform the update.

Sorry to burst your bubble but there will be no HD update for these , as it is only capable of recieving DVB-T and HD signal is sent as DVB-T2 , the update due for this box is to incorporate facebook some how, my guess reason these are so cheap as a new dvb-t2 box is on the way allow for hd veiwing

I don't think the poster was saying he would be able to watch HD programs just that the unit upgrades the picture quality to HD quality.
#9
The reason why most channels look like standard youtube put in full screen is that most channels are cheapos when it comes to freeview. BBC1 and 2 are the only ones that look particularly good.
#10
I have just been reading that theres is chance of compatibility with this on a pc to use with windows media centre, could be worth a pop at that price. The eyetoy works great as a webcam

its upscales to HD, he never said it receives HD. Read more carefully next time.

yes it does work with a pc with a little bit of effort. plenty of forums dedicated to exploiting its capabilities.

Not for £20 it wont, will probably be the price PlayTV was initially, £70 if not more. And considering you can only get like 3 or 4 HD channels on freeview, I don't think it'll be worth it.

For anybody looking for this in Newcastle they dont have any at Kingston Park:x

I did not say that PlayTV 2 would be £20 quid. Read my post properly.

There will also be a lot of new features with Play TV 2.

There has been no announcement of Play TV2, it is *pure* speculation as to whether or not it will come out. Personally, i'm not convinced - as someone pointed out earlier, Play TV will recieve HD digital terrestrial signals through the rest of Europe, and I believe Australia. So that pretty much means that Play TV will not be obsolete in 90% of the markets in which it sells. I'm not convinced that Sony will make a DVB-T2 reciever until more than just the British Market needs one.

If and when Europe, Australia, or Japan adopt the DVB-T2 standard, then maybe market forces will make it worthwhile for Sony to make one, but until these regions at least *announce* that they might adopt in future, then I don't believe that there is enough profit for Sony to make an entirely new piece of equipment just for UK users. and if they do, they'll have to recoup incredibly high costs - so expect it to cost a *lot* more than £20.

Got this on the last deal at currys for around £24.
Great bit of kit although it looks like I need a new ariel as some channels stutter and go blocky. Purely down to my signal though not the playtv unit itself.

Where is the option to update please? I see along the bottom of the screen it says update available but I can not find where to select to update ??

Thanks

Thanks

Bought this a couple of weeks ago and only got round to setting it up a couple of days ago. Really impressed with it - doddle to set up and works a treat. Make sure you do the upgrade as the picture looks a lot better.

What I found out last night whilst messing around is if you have a PSP and using the remote play you can watch (and control) live tv over your wireless network. Whilst watching on the PSP you can't watch it on your tv via the usual route. But it is great for the kids who wanted to watch the Simpsons on E4 via PlayTV via the PSP, whilst I watched the news via the Virgin box. So as long as your PSP is in reach of the network you can watch the tv on it anywhere in range.

If you have access to a network anywhere in the world you can watch (& control) recordings from your PSP connected to your PS3 with "Remote Play" too.

Upscales to HD my arse, ive got one and while it may upscale a little it does not look anything like HD material in fact can not really notice the difference..so dont buy just for this claimed feature, i good deal though, i paid £25 recently and think that was a good price for a free view recorder for my PS3

I had seen that mentioned but not tried it. Can you watch live TV like this or just recordings?
#26
I have Virgin media, no other way of getting reception. Can Play tv run through virgin media?
1 Like #27
no, all play tv does is be a freeview box. it can't pick up sky, or virgin, what it does is play freeview.

Siddas - you can do anything over the internet that you can do in range of your own wireless, so yeah, you can watch live tv. Some routers have problems with it though - when i tried setting it up, i found out that my PS3 just wakes up as soon as i turn it off, thinking that it has an incoming connection, whcih would make it impractical to use.

Any evidence to support your advice about 'PlayTV2 being out soon which supports Freeview HD'?
#29
"upscales to HD" doesn't mean "makes your ordinary freeview into full HD". The upscaling on PlayTV is the best that I have ever seen. It is far superior to the upscaling offered by my humax hd freeview box. The problem with playtv is that it is prone to horrible stuttering on some PS3s. I have an 80GB fat PS3 and if you try to do anything whilst you are recording (play games, watch another channel etc) then the recording often becomes unusable. I think I will buy a new hard drive when PlayTV HD comes out (which it will) but I don't know if that will sort it.

My opinion on what PlayTV 2 will be is that they will make a big update for playTV with facebook and all that useless stuff. The update will probably be the basis for the software for playTV and the only cost that sony will have is for the actual new silicon itself. PlayTV already supports HD in other countries so most of the hard work has already been done.

Edit: the reason for believing playTV 2 is imminent is that there are a bunch of clearance deals and a guy from the playTV dev team accidentally mentioned it in an interview recently (along with the facebook integration). He didn't say HD but it is likely that, given the timing, HD is the major update.

I don't think the mention was "accidental". It was quoted on the Official EU PlayStation Blog.

Major PlayTV Update Due Towards The End of 2010

Hi, Just wanted to let you know that the guys at Cambridge studios are working really hard to develop some great new features for PlayTV. The next update for PlayTV is due later this year but testing of some of the new features has already begun.

I don’t want to give too much away and spoil the surprise but a little hint to one of the new features is that PlayTV will have links to the worlds most popular social network site, Facebook. Other great enhancements to PlayTV and brand new features will also be included in the update.

As soon as these exciting new features are ready for you I’ll give you all the details here on the blog.

Hope you are enjoying your PlayTV on your PS3. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to add them and I’ll be back on here on Monday to answer as many as I can.

I look forward to getting this update to you later in the year.

Well, as a whole studio, I think you saw TV Superstars for Move announced a little while ago. We're still working on Play TV, Play TV 2. And then we have other guys working on other concepts...

yes PSP 'remote play' allows you to watch live TV, set recordings or watch recordings - works well if you have a BB connection with reasonable 'upload' speed - ideally 512mb or above, although its perfectly watchable on my approx 345mb upload speed).

Remote play on PSP also allows you to control and use the PS3 just like its in front of you....eg play music, view photos etc...

Is it conceptually possible to have some kit that converts DVB-T2 signals to DVB-T1 so that you could use Play TV for UK Freeview HD or is this beyond reason?
#34
For those wanting an HD version, apparently sony are working on one. Good price

Anyone been aboe to find any of these?
