They are clearing stock as these stores have insider info on that fact that a future PS3 update will allow you to play your PS2 games.

Still £30 for a PS2 is a bargain tho.
#5
worth having one around the house

Isn't that PS3 to play PS2 games update speculation at the moment ?

Sony haven't actually announced that they are working on a backwards compatibility update, have they ?
#7
Hot eitherway. Hotter if its nationwide!

The rumour I heard was that they'd been working on new hardware BC for the new slim model.

Picked one up for £4.99 from Oxfam a couple of weeks ago (with a wireless controller) but this is still hot.
#10
Great price for a new one
#11
None instock near me :-( they font even have a ps2 section now

Sony filed a patent on a software that is capable of emulating PS2 games. No need for additional hardware. The PS3 is more than powerful enough.

Nintendo Wii: 252,500
Microsoft Xbox 360: 202,900
Sony PSP: 122,800
Sony PlayStation 3: 121,800
Sony PlayStation 2: 108,000"

Tasty price. PS3 backwards compatibility is little more than a rumour at this point.
#17

They sell because they're cheap and have a MASSIVE back catalogue of games (most of which can be bought for pennies/couple £). Not everyone cares about the latest gen graphics.

The original launch PS3's are backwards compatible (as it had the original emotion ps2 chip in them) and even the newer ones have the ability to play most ps2 games via software emulation. The only games that dont play well on mine are guitar hero 1 + 2 as the controllers are not compatible - even when going through about 3 or 4 different gadgets/card readers etc.

Anyhows, great price, will nip across to local after work and see if there are any around, need a slim one as fast running out of room under TV
#20
yea my 60gb uk ps3 plays ps2 games using software emulation. I was under the impression the usa older version ps3's have a hardware chip in them play ps3 games whereas mine uses software emulation.

they removed the software emulation from the newer ones the same way they reduced the number of usb's on the front, i guess they want to cut there manufacturing costs down.

i saw some stock at the staines home store yesterday bargain

These instore deals seem to be useless.......
WHsmith - PSP Slim - £49.99
Asda - PSP 3000 FIFA 09 PACKAGE - £74.99
WHSMith - PS3 60GB £200 instore
WHsmith - PSP gigapack - £49.99
Orange - HTC TOUCH HD - £99

So many deals like this....theirs like 30 nationwide and a million people want them.
Sorry OP, but just stating the facts.
#23
I got one today in Cardiff for £30!! Hot hot hot thanks
#24
fingers crossed my local has one left

worth noting that anyone with a 40gb PS3 will not be able to take advantage of ANY ps2 emulation update due to the different make up of the hardware (do a search)

That's still 30 people benefiting because salty35 took the time to post his/her info. If you personally can't take advantage of a deal someone's been kind enough to post then just move along. There's no point coming in here to moan about how you think the deal is useless etc etc just because you can't get one.

good point and also worth noting that with some research and a little work the ps2 can be used as a media center (not for HD stuff though obviously)

Well there is RAMPANT and undeniable speculation where all stocks of the current ps3 model is being cleared in japan, most countries in europe in favour of the new slim model for the ps3 that is supposed to be coming out in a few months time. However as it stands I keep my younger siblings on a tight leash - only allowing them to play last generation handhelds and consoles. so i guess its about time my little brother and sister moved on from the n64 and got a ps2.

Me and a mate got one each for £27 with staff discount :D

Nobody forced them to go to the stores to look. If it's a potential waste of your time to go then don't go. Doesn't mean that a good deal shouldn't be posted to let those who are going to Tesco anyway know it's there.

Like Rubisco said, nobody forced them to do anything!. Besides why not just phone your local store if you don't fancy making the journey??. And keep in mind a lot of people will be visiting Tesco for their shopping anyway so this just gives them something extra to look out for. And threads like these actually help people locate stock so I really don't get why people like yourself feel the need to moan.

None in your local area?, then why not post about it and help others out. It would be more helpful than simply posting "useless deal blah blah blah, I'm jealous I didn't get one blah blah blah".
