....My 60GB (launch model) died the YLOD today... so I was looking for a new PS3 and I found this 160GB model for £199.99 @ Playstationrewards.co.uk (it comes with a Dualshock 3 Controller and free next day delivery).

Oh and I also found a 120GB for £199.97 at PC World (Home Delivery only)
http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/sony-playstation-3-120gb-slim-game-console-03611506-pdt.html

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

P.S. I know YLOD is treatable and I do plan on getting it sorted locally (for £50)... but I really don't trust it anymore & even though I have stuck up for the 60GB launch model lots of times in forums, I have decided to sell it on and get a new slim version... strangely the only bit that bothers me is that you can't transfer Hard Drives between consoles, so the 640GB (upgrade) in my old PS3 will have to be formatted to go in the new slim.

I may be being very cynical here, but is this site for real? I'm always suspicious when you have to enter what looks like a referral code to enter a site.

Click on the Redberry link in the bottom corner, go to projects and select the all projects option, see if this web site appears in their total list of projects, that might help you decide if its legit?

thats really weird mate because my 60gb ps3 consoles done exactlly the samething too me last night.i too have always stuck u for how great and well built they are then last night after playing a game for 10 mins it packed in and i got the ylod :(

ive contacted a guy on ebay who has a store close too me who fixs them for £40 but even hes admited that once they get the ylod its treatable but it will return over time as its a design fault in earlier models such as 60/80gb ps3 consoles.

and you can back up your data by hooking it up to a external hard drive then you click on the backup utility on the ps3 dashboard ive done this and it does work.or you could just take out the hard drive and put it in the new console thats what im going to do im gonna get it fixed this week but i will be buying a newone as soon as i get the money and all ill do is take out the hard drive and put it in the new one.

if you do get it fixed ive just found out cex will give you £117 for it cash so i think ill do that get it fixed then sell it on at the first sign its gonna fail..

Cool, looks like I WAS being overly cynical :D. Seriously hot deal.... Now, bearing in mind I have a 360 and Wii that I barely use..... :D

all ill do is take out the hard drive and put it in the new one.

This does not work. The first thing your new PS3 will do is completely format the drive. Even if it's been in another PS3.

Once your ps3 has had the YLOD problem and been fixed yes it may work, but you will find it very hard to trade in on the high street, I had a 60GB with this problem and my brother in law fixed it and I played dumb. Gamestation, Game & CEX refused it because to fix it the Seal has to be removed to get inside. HMV gave me the best price of £140 so I took this and got a 320GB Slim with Move Starter Pack and Fifa 11 and off loaded that to my brother in Law for £30. But defo give your high street a try but all the shops I went in as you can see were clued up on YLOD

If you get it fixed(Any half competent person can DIY)then you can use the data transfer utility on the PS3 to copy from one PS3 to another. This will make a exact clone onto the 2nd machine.

My 60gb had the YLOD about a year ago, I fixed it using the towel and hairdryer method (search for it on youtube). It worked long enough for me to remove my game disc, backup my HDD and then trade it in for £160 at Game. This method slightly warped the casings on rear of the PS3 around the vents but didn't invalidate the warranty.

does anyone one know if i can use it in australia?
#19
I have a question that's half-relevant. Recently bought an out of warranty PS3 - obviously terrified at the prospect of YLOD, so I thought I'd insure my console. I don't have home insurance - I thought of getting console insurance from e.g protectyourbubble.com. Anyone used them before?

Where did you buy it from? That may have relevance to which organisations will provide cover.

Hey,

PS3 consoles are region free so would be fine. However that's only for games, blu rays will still be region locked.
#29
There's absolutely no way I would buy anything of value from a retailer who doesn't provide a telephone number and an address.

DO NOT PAY FOR SOMEONE TO FIX IT.

If you have the receipt - the you have rights under the Sale of Goods Act 1979, that it should last for longer than 3 1/2 years. PS3's should last a reasonable amount of time! My mate got his resoldered for free and I'm currently getting mine picked up later in week for a free fix.

Call the retailer, and also Consumer Direct. Good luck guys!

My one died on Christmas morning! Not a happy bunny.

Hope this is of some help to some people!!!

I have no idea (don't have the original receipts), but it's the 40GB model - so I would assume around 2008.

Not all games are region free; there are some exceptions due to inclusion of video content on the same Blu-ray Disc.

Australasia shares the same encoding system as the UK; PAL (Phase Alternating Line).

When “The Sale of Goods Act 1979″ was amended in 1994 it included a clause to say that goods purchased from a trader must correspond with the description, be of satisfactory quality, & be fit for purpose with a continued operation over a “reasonable” length of time.

If the goods are not of “satisfactory quality” you are entitled to claim a refund or compensation (that typically represents the cost of any repairs).

You may make a claim up to five (in Scotland) or six years after the initial purchase date.

The retailer, not the manufacturer, is legally obliged to resolve any issue with the goods.

The terms of the Consumer Law are in excess of the standard one-year guarantee provided by the manufacturer.

Extended warranties are, again, in addition to the cover provided by “The Sale of Goods Act”.

The cover described above can be used to claim a refund from the retailer you purchased your PS3 console from due to the loss of the “Other OS” feature.

True but it depends how the retailer wants to pursue it. The reasonable use clause of the act is usally for a judge to decide in small claims AFAIK. The retailer could argue that the dispute is between you and the manufacturer if its past the usual 1yr period, even more so with YLOD being widely accepted as an inherent fault!) which could have you pulling your hair out!! Although in my experience the sheer fact that you quote it USUALLY makes them think its easier to shut you up.

Unless you know the history of the console (rather than assuming a manufacturer/original purchase date) I would expect most (if not all) insurers would not provide cover.

Has it been exchanged by Sony Computer Entertainment previously?
Is it still covered under their warranty?

BFN,

Hmm. I hadn't considered that. As far as I know (which admittedly, isn't much) it's never been exchanged by SCEx, and it's out of warranty - hence me looking to get it insured.

I agree with you; but check the other deal listing I quoted above. Other members have reported the successful receipt of a console (one such post just this morning, in fact).

That said, if the console were to require repair or exchange, then you may have to pursue this with Sony Computer Entertainment directly (as we have just been discussing).

regarding YLOD

I had the same problem with my 60 gig. I've complained to my PS3 seller 3 years after purchase. (SOGA protect consumers for 5 years if problem is caused by inherrent fault). My complain has been successfully recognized. My PS3 seller offered free of charge repair and after 3rd failed repair attempt I've been offered 170 quid gift card.

Have you typed SCEx because you do not know which region the console is from?

Sony Computer Entertainment... A)merica, E)urope, J)apan, & so on?

I would ask the HotUKDeals/FO.LK member for some details prior to contacting insurers.
That said, I would have asked the member before I bought it.
