That's a box damaged one from playtrade :)

aww ok:)

could someone tell me the difference between the 40gb and the 80gb please? i have a feeling there are more changes, even if minor changes, than a simple hard drive difference, thanks.

The 80GB comes with a Dual Shock controller rather than a SixAxis. Apart from that and the extra 40GB there's no differnce.

It's either a new one from Argos (where you can return to store if you have any problems) or a bax damaged/used/customer return from Choices, where you'll have to post it back to them if any problems

guess that would make the price difference between the 40 and 80gb more than £10 difference...

I bought a 40GB for Xmas from BIH, the box was not damaged and the console was brand new, even though the description said customer return and damaged box:)

40Gb has a standard sixaxis controller (no rumble) later 80gb has Dualshock controller.

There are rumours that midway through production the 40gb changed from the older 90nm cell CPU to the cooler and quiter 65nm one midway through production. Whereas all of the 80Gb's have the 65nm Cell

difference in power consumption between the 90nm and 65nm is reportedly a quite substantial 70w

Hot deal
But I would go for the 80GB from buyithere.com. Those DS3 controllers are good and they're not cheap.

I heard some where that the 40GB console was backwards compatible but the 80GB wasn't so if you want to use yourr old PS1 AND PS2 games the 40GB version is the one to go for. If I'm wrong sincere apologies.

All of the PS3s will play PS1 games. Only the discontinued 60GB version will play PS2 games (and not all of them at that).

I'm just about to buy the 80gb from Argos using MBNA lifestyle vouchers for £276 with GT5 and Killzone.

Is this better?
£202.40 for a 40gb one.
Extra £74 for the better controller, and two games.?

Can sell the sixaxis (on here) for £18-£20, and buy a Dual Shock for about £35. GT5 can be picked up for about £10 these days, and Killzone for £30, so you could save about £20 by having the 40GB version. You can also pick up larger hard drives (I'm sure there's a 250gb or 320gb on play.com for about £50)

so tempted.... (could flog the hd-dvd drive for xbox then.....) - That way wife wouldnt mind me buying as much....
#24
Cheers mate - adds a new dimension to it.

With the mbna vouchers and 8% off, I've worked out:
40gb ps3
extra controller and virtua tennis
remote
tiger woods 08
gt5 and motorstorm
all for an out of my pocket price of £284.
Not the latest games or the official controller, but still - PS3, remote, 2 controllers and 4 games for £284 is great for me.

If I go with the dual-shock trade off like you said, then £300. Made up.....I'm off to Argos.
#25
If you're having it delivered don't forget you're 1.5% quidco

EDIT: If only I read properly

Im holding on until april and then im going to go for it there are two many rumours regarding the ps3 price drop dates hinted are march 23 or begining of april, here's an article from CVG today http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=211023

I didn't think it was that complicated. Basically anything below £300 is probably a non-backwardly compatible (except PS1 games) new design PS3 (sold after about Oct/Nov 07 in the UK I think). The original PS3s that could play PS2 games are more rare and more expensive, they also have more USB ports and support solid state memory cards.

I can't read that from work, but I thought there were more rumours of there being no price drop (weakness of the pound, already losing money on every PS3 etc) than there were there'd be a drop.

Either way, £220 for a console is still very good. If the 80gb goes as far as £250 for console only I'll be surprised, and the 40gb one at £220 will still have been good business.

the 80gb can also have a newer chip with lower energy consumption. and as someone stated they comd with ds3 isntead of sixaxis.
#34
I think you can get the 80GB console only for £260 at Zavvi till Friday

£294.95 - 10% and they have emailed all existing customers a £5 off anything voucher making it £260.95.

Might be an alternative?
#35
i bought the killzone 2 80gb bundle from play.com... listed at £289.99.

using the RAC code it came to £275.49.. selling the game makes it cost £245.. :-)
#37
Most of the Zavvi stores not taken over by Head(sold by administrators) still have them for £250! They do here in Dundee anyway.......!

Pity I can't afford one till next month! :(
#38
Does the 1.5% discount from Quidco work with this item?
#39
do argos send a confirmation email through after you've ordered?

I've got an email from them but it just says "thanks for registering with argos"

if this turns out to be a **** up and they cancel my order like DICKsons then i'll be well ****** off :(
#40
the only playstation 2 games which play on the 40GB ps3 are some singstar games... even then, you need the ps3 version of singstar then u have to hot swap in the ps2 game
