How is this any different from the standard RRP that you can get wandering into a gamestation
#5
managed to blag it for xmas from the mrs with her JL discount. £296 i think it was =)

well, i haven't looked *too* hard, but on a quick scan, HMV don't sell any 160Gb PS3s, and the cheapest gamestation have on their website for a 160Gb model is £390. Game also don't appear to have any 160Gb models.

this doesn't seem like the deal of the century to me, but i think it seems a decent price for the bigger model.

Yes, £339.99 is the Recommended Retail Price.

On the day of release (31 October 2008), certain retailers were selling "bare" (standard boxed) 160Gb models, but others were bundling one or two Blu-ray games (and GameStation were throwing in the Blu-ray movie of "Transformers").

I have bought two from GAME now (one in-store on the day of release, and one via mail order... also with free delivery, like John Lewis).

I made the mistake of thinking "oh, there'll be loads left" in relation to PS2 consoles a few years ago, and come the start of December nobody had any. And, of course, the Wii console has been in limited supply (and high demand) for the past two festive seasons.

The 160Gb PS3 consoles were always supposed to be limited in supply, so if you do want one for Christmas morning, and find one for sale I would advise buying it. eBay has a few examples from sellers with inflated prices, of course.

PS. The "4 free games" are within every 'standard' box. The games differ slightly (see post I linked to above), but all four are downloadable titles from the PlayStation Network, so if you do not have the facilities to connect & download several 100's of Gigabytes of data you will need at least a physical (Blu-ray) game title for Christmas morning.

They are already inside the (sealed) box.

You will need to sign-up to the PlayStation Network (and agree to the terms & conditions of usage) to be able to redeem the codes.

They are games you download from the PlayStation Store.

GamePlay don't have any either.

GameStation have their PS3 bundles on one page with two including the 160Gb model:

£439.89 PS3 160GB + Fifa 09 + Burnout Paradise + Unchartered Drakes Fortune + Oblivion GOTY

£389.89 PS3 160GB + Fifa 09 + Burnout Paradise + Transformers (BR)

But they also have a 'standalone' retail box for £339.99 listed available for despatch.

It's a mistake if they think the sealed box has a SIXAXIS wireless controller in it, but it is always best to check with the individual retailer if what they list in the product description is not what you are expecting to find when the delivery arrives.

If they do substitute the SIXAXIS for the DUALSHOCK 3, for whatever reason, then they can rightly claim they did inform you prior to sale that this would be the case.

For £600 you can probably buy two brand new 80Gb models, two brand new 320Gb hard drives to upgrade them, and still have change.

Granted you won't get the downloadable titles, but if you did just want one console, don't pay silly money for it.

(If you bought 40Gb consoles; £249.99 at HMV, then you could afford the games too)

The PS3 console has been designed so that the end consumer can remove the integral hard drive supplied as new & fit another (larger, if so desired) drive at a later date without affecting the standard warranty.

£600 is re-dick-a-lick-a-lick-your-ass crazy.

If you search the listings here at HotUKDeals you'll see that 60Gb consoles come up for sale periodically.

GameStation sell them pre-owned too. CEx.co.uk also. Other retailers are available.

But yes, the 160Gb was originally going to be a Limited release [that may well still be the case]. If you do not buy now, you may not get the opportunity again.

...However... as I tried to promote above, you could just buy a 40Gb or 80Gb model & upgrade it if/when you a) can afford it, or b) need to.

Talking of crazy deals...

HMV are offering the following Sony boxed package from 21 November 2008 for £299.99:
"Ps3: Sony Playstation 3 Console: 80gb Includes Batman Begins & Blu Ray Remote"

"Batman Begins"? Like, erm, why?

Why didn't they wait a few weeks & include "The Dark Knight"... or indeed both movies!?!

Weird.

Back to your post...

Your thread may not seem very popular now, & it will be suggested that this is not a "deal", but give it another four weeks & a few (hundred) people will be kicking themselves that they had the opportunity to buy from John Lewis but stocks have run out & won't be available again before Christmas.

Welcome to HotUKDeals in any respect :)

60Gb will always fetch a premium even used due to the backwards comapitibility for PS2 games.

Nothing special about the 160Gb model other than a bigger hdd. Other than the Download content it works out virtually the same price to buy a 80Gb console with a couple of better bundled physical games and a 320Gb HDD to fit yourself.

When I typed that earlier this afternoon the 5% Voucher Code for Play.com was still functional.

I haven't "shopped around" since, but this approach will get you a 320Gb PS3 for around £315...

Buy this bundle from Play.com & sell the extraneous items to fund the £59.99 for a 320Gb hard drive (cheaper prices may be available at other retailers)...

"Sony PlayStation 3 PS3 Console with 80GB HDD + James Bond: Quantum Of Solace + Batman Begins (Blu-ray Movie) + Blu-ray Remote Control"

£299.99 optional with 1% QuidCo cashback

- "Quantum of Solace" game (R.R.P £39.99) - sell for £25-£30
- "Batman Begins" Blu-ray movie (R.R.P £23.99) - may get a tenner for this
- Blu-ray Remote Control (R.R.P £17.99) - another tenner possibly

So, say £45 for the three. Amount spent on console: £299.99 - £45 = £254.99

Then buy...

"Western Digital Scorpio WD3200BEVT 320GB 2.5" Internal SATA Hard Drive - Sony Playstation PS3 Compatible"

£59.99 with optional 0.5% QuidCo cashback

Total spend: £299.99 - £45 + £59.99 = £314.98.

OK, buying two would make it £629.96... but that's because the 5% Voucher Code isn't taken into account.

I'm sure if you find similar deals with items that may fetch higher prices you can buy two for £600 overall.

Good luck.

BFN,

fp.

EDIT:
PS.
If anybody puts the above suggestion to good use, I'd offer you £25 each (£50 total) for two "Quantum of Solace" [PS3] titles (for two of my kids for Christmas), & £10 for an official PS3 Blu-ray Remote Control (for a present for me!) :)

Thanks for that fp.
I really can't decide which is the best current deal for me. I might go down to game/gamestation tomorrow to see if they'll do me a PS3 + 2games for £300 deal for me, but don't know if they'll let me choose the games!
