The GAME Group stores (including GamePlay, and GameStation), and John Lewis are all listing 160Gb PS3 consoles (with “FIFA 09”, “Fallout 3”, or on their own). HMV changed their listing of this item to “unavailable” / “Availability: sorry this title is deleted” on Wednesday. Zavvi, Amazon, and Play.com are not listing them at all (at present).

Interestingly, John Lewis are offering the console included with “a voucher booklet with 4 free exciting games to download from the PSN store - GT5: Prologue, Ratchet & Clank Quest for Booty, Warhawk and Last Guy” (as well as a bundle with PlayTV), but everybody else is listing “Super Stardust HD” instead of “Warhawk”.

As mentioned, GameStation also bundles a Blu-ray movie of “Transformers” for seemingly no additional cost.

not a bad deal but personally I would try to get the 40gb for £250 and just put a 250gb drive in for about £35. fifa can be had for about 29.99 anyway and the download games aren't great.

Doesn't the 40Gb version come without the Dualshock3 (worth what £40?) and no wireless networking (needs a USB dongle £20).

However, I like the look of the 80Gb + LBP + FIFA09 + Free HDMI for £310 from amazon if its still available. Not much between the 2 deals.

EDIT: Just checked the amazon offer and it is preorder and awaits LBP release on Nov 28. amazon linky

40gb still has wireless networking but true that is doesnt have DS3 but you can get one for £25 and sell the other one for £15.

I like the look of the deal you mentioned too but don't want to wait until 28nov and then chance it that they refund the cost of fifa (via email communication).

Quite a dilemma

Could try and email them prior to ordering for clarification on the fifa offer. Cant open mine til christmas anyway, except to test it works :whistling:

EDIT: Just sent...

Hi,
I wonder if you could clarify whether the 'Get FIFA 09 for £10 and an HDMI Cable Free with PS3 Purchase', code GAME4TEN, can be applied to the preorder 80Gb PS3 + Little Big Planet deal, due for release 28th November.

...to amazon. See what they return.

you might as well wait until the 28/11 before ordering then as fifa for £10 should work online then (amazon just have a problem bundling pre-orders).

"LittleBigPlanet" is out in the UK next week (quoted as Wednesday 5 November 2008, rather than the usual Friday release day!?!). Perhaps Sony has restricted the sale of bundles including this title until they have sold their own 80Gb model that has "LittleBigPlanet" included effectively free.

I purchased the only 160Gb in GAME in Chelmsford this morning according to the sale representative I spoke to. I did ask for two units, but she had to check stocks "with the manager" & came back to inform me that they only had one available. Not sure if this was a ploy to then offer me extended (by a further 2 year) insurance "as these consoles are so limited, if it breaks you are likely to be offered an 80Gb one instead", but if backfired as I didn't buy the insurance (nor a second console, more to the point).

The pack included PlayStation Store codes for “Gran Turismo 5: Prologue”, “Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty”, “Super Stardust HD”, & “The Last Guy”… as well as a DUALSHOCK 3 controller.

Apparently, there are only 20 GAME Stores in the UK that will be selling these units.
(again, according to the sales representative in Chelmsford. "Citation needed", I think)

HMV did not have any at all.
The Sony Centre store said they were not expecting any in stock to sell, but they did say that there were 400 units sat in a warehouse in Basildon for distribution across the UK.
(Sorry, I should have queried if this was 400 just for Sony Centre stores, or for all retailers).

I ordered another online from GamePlay [so far without any issues regarding stock shortages].
UPDATE: There was, in fact, an issue with this order. I have now cancelled the order, and my entire account at GamePlay.co.uk, and placed a subsequent order at Game.co.uk instead. (Albeit I'll ultimately be lining the pockets of the same people in the long term).

Anybody else found difficulty buying these in "the high street"?

apparently amazon are doing it for £299.99 and then you add in a free hdmi lead and fifa 09 for £10 (you have to claim the money back as they charge full price for lead and fifa initially).

No offence but I now wouldnt buy anything substantial from play as they insist that you return items to them at YOUR expense (even if the item is faulty!).

I asked in GAME yesterday about the 160GB PS3 and the sales assistants didn't know anything about. They just told me it was probably being released in America, they didn't have a clue!!

What has happened to the release of the 160GB PS3??? Nowhere seems to be selling it or know anything about it. fanpages you must be very lucky to have found one!

None taken :)

I checked up on the "Terms & Conditions" (Liability) & found that what you mentioned was correct (for electrical items)...

---
27. In the unlikely event that you receive goods which were not what you ordered or which are damaged or defective, or are of a different quantity to that stated on your order form, Play.com shall, at its own option, make good any shortage or non-delivery, replace or repair any damaged or defective goods, or refund to you the amount you paid for the goods in question PROVIDED THAT you notify Play.com of the problem in writing at the address stated in the confirmation e-mail within 10 working days of delivery of the goods. NOTHING IN THIS CLAUSE AFFECTS
YOUR STATUTORY RIGHTS.

30. All electrical products are covered by a twelve month manufacturer's warranty. If your product develops a fault while under warranty, please contact Play.com and we will advise you where to send it for repair. It is a "return to base" warranty therefore there will be a delivery charge to return the product back to the relevant UK service centre.

I think so, yes.

I could foresee this release going badly due to the lack of information leading up to the launch (from when I first commented on the ThreeSpeech.com thread [21 August 2008]); hence why I summarised my research to date (on a few threads this morning) to help anybody else who would be interested.

No advertising anywhere. No promotion. No idea.

I thought you just bought two 160gb ps3s :?

I did. Or at least I thought I had.

I received an e-mail to inform me that "Regrettably on this occasion we [GamePlay.co.uk] have been unable to fulfil your order. This may be for a number of reasons, if you wish to discuss this order please call our customer service team on 0845 3454 4(forty)".

So that I did, but the outcome of the conversation was that I requested the closure of my Gameplay.co.uk account (that will take 24 hours to complete) rather than rectifying the transaction through to a successful order placement.

Although previously placing an order (earlier this year) & receiving this at the same address as I requested delivery on this occasion, I have now apparently failed GamePlay's "security check" procedure.

The advisor on the telephone although initially helpful eventually ended the call whilst I was continuing to speak to confirm my details would be deleted from the GamePlay database records.

Although I realise Game & GamePlay are ultimately the same organisation, I have now placed an online order at GAME for another 160Gb console [QuidCo: 1.5% "This merchant pays cashback based on the order value excluding VAT and delivery charges"; £3 off £30 voucher code, and Reward Points with this purchase: 3400 (= £8.50)].

Yes, I appreciate the cost of the console is a lot of money for GamePlay to lose if the transaction turns out to be fraudulent, especially in times of reduced consumer spending due to the world's economy. However, given that I am a repeat customer, and I didn't take too kindly to how the customer services call progressed (certainly when I was cut-off mid sentence), if they wish to lose my business without putting me in touch with a more senior advisor as I wished (prior to my request to close my account), then this is enough for me to take my business elsewhere (for good).

And it's not as if I can afford anything else this month or next now anyway :)

Crikey!

Its the weirdest thing, Sony's lack of marketing for the PS3 generally. PSM Magazine's (appreciate this now reads Playstation Magazine Magazine's) backpage had an Xbox advert for Fable 2 lol.

:)

And because "PSM" is not an official Sony/PlayStation publication it fills the latter few pages with adverts for, erm, ladies who like to talk whilst you listen at a high cost per minute.

The "Official PlayStation Magazine - UK", however, tends to be very self-promoting (as do the comparable Nintendo & Microsoft publications, as you would expect).

One of Sony's main issues with marketing the PS3 is that the PS2 is still in competition with it!

Here is their reply...

"Thank you for contacting Amazon.co.uk.

In checking our website, I can confirm that the promotion is eligible for the Pre-order item "Sony PLAYSTATION 3 80 GB Console with Little Big Planet (PS3)".

To qualify for this offer, you must add the other item to your Shopping Basket at the time you place your order, at the checkout stage and the discount will automatically be applied.

However if the discount is not applied we please request you to place the order for both the items and write back to us with the order number and we will be happy to apply the discount."

Great if want the hastle and to void your warrenty! Personally I would rather buy the real deal. Only £49 more than an 80GB PS3 for a 160GB and with the Free games in the cost is easily covered. Then if it don't work on Xmas day....

I'm with you on buying the commercially available larger on-board hard drive unit, especially, as you said, that the PlayStation Network titles offset the cost, but the warranty will not be voided if you swap out the original hard drive. The steps on how to do this are described within the user manual.

[I have a European release day 60Gb unit that is constantly 95%+ full, but I would like to keep it as supplied because I'm weird (in a collector's kind of) way]

Expanding the HD doesnt void the warranty, sony have made this a simple job and even give you instructions on how to do it in the PS3 manual.
So maybe next time think before you post... I find it helps if you actually have a bit of knowledge on the subject.

It's a common misconception or misunderstanding... probably because it is not typically what you would expect from a manufacturer who usually places "Warranty Voided if removed" stickers on their products.

A Sony-approved list of compatible hard drives would be a good addition to the official web site, mind.
