Sainsbury's was doing slim's for £199 recently. Considering RRP of 120 slim is £250, this deal is cold from me.
#2
Sorry, but if you really are looking for a PS3 get as new a design as possible.
I've got one of these old large ones and it's constantly freezing and giving up on me now. :?

I don't mind people voting cold! £45 might be a lot of money for someone e.g a youngster accumulating their savings towards a PS3 and can't wait!

There probably are better deals out there, but they aren't as cheap. I recently posted a play.com deal (250gb and Heavy Rain for £269.99) which was lukewarm.

The Asda deal has no stock near me at the moment!

PS I would be grateful if someone could submit the HUKD urls of the PS3 console deals that were below £200, can't find them now.

I'm guessing this still sells for around £200 for the ps2 backwards compatability.

It's the 60gb that has PS2 BC, not the 80gb

while I believe they are more efficient in terms of power usage, I don't see a problem with older PS3 models, I've had mine since launch day and never had any issues. I'd imagine the original PS3's use better components than the slim revision, and I personally prefer the shiny look with the touch sensitive buttons.
#7
Hot from me.

You can't install linux on the slim PS3s, so I'd say the old ones are better. You only need more than 80GB HDD space if you are using it as a media centre (e.g. with playtv), in which case you'll want to swap out the hard drive for a 320-500GB one anyway.

Yes the new ones are smaller and use less power, but overall I'd say the old ones were better.

It has limited bc doesn't it? Not the same as a 60gb IIRC?

EDIT: Just did some research and apparently that issue has gone & nearly all PS2 titles work on it. If that's the case then it's hot from me, sorry for doubting you mate, I'll get my facts right before I post next time.

he he no worries, i've just gone on sonys site because i think these sites are mis informing people, i was led to believe that more than one version of the 80gb model played ps2 games but this chart shows just the one.

Wether sony aren't mentioning the software emulation as it was included in software updates.

heres the link to sony's bc chart

It does annoy me that Sony are keeping quiet on things like these, why not just come out & say whether it does or not, rather than leaving people wondering.

I should be getting my PS3 slim tomorrow, depends how much I get for my xbox lol, hopefully there's a few decent PS2 titles on the store lol.
#19
There are no PS2 games on the store, and there is no way to get the 80gb PS3 playing PS2 games. The 80gb that was released in the UK never had PS2 backward compatibility. The only one that did was the 60gb.
#20
For those that are actively looking for the old model new this is an okay price, but for those looking to buy a PS3 to play games go for the new slim model, its smaller! for £30 more!

Not exactly the best reason really, installing Linux on the PS3 is largely pointless, it can't access most of the hardware so it's rather crippled. Certainly not a feature that anyone is going to miss.

Are you seriously believing that you can download a file from the store that lets you play PS2 games on a PS3 that isn't backwards compatible?

The guy is playing God of War Collection. He is playing a PS3 game on his PS3.

The file on the store is for enabling the hard drive for PS2 games that require use of it, like Final Fantasy XI. This is only of any use to someone with a BC model PS3.

Great deal for the phat, loads of style.

Imported? massmail666 is right, Sony removed the Emotion Engine in the newer models and removed some USB ports etc - emulation only works on the older PS2s.

If your PS2 has 4 USB ports you can play PS2 games otherwise you cannot.

*edit*

As for the actual deal it's ok. Like the OP said, to some people the difference in money can be quite a lot. Personally I'd rather go for the slim and Linux support may be removed in the future (due to it recently being exploited) - don't forget by time you add a few games the price goes up quite a bit, so it's probably better to spend a bit more and get a 120GB slim with game(s) bundle.

quidco should get you the delivery charge back too

yeah it's a usa 80gb motorstorm ltd edition :)

Expensive. I got the 120GB one for £199 from Very using the 20% discount code.
#31
Cold from me, especially with the price of the slims now.

:idea:So could I convert 11,000 Nectar points to vouchers in-store and then purchase on-line inputting the voucher serial numbers:?:

Glad you know what I meant, I seem to have typed PS2 instead of PS3 every time  - I'm quite looking forward to Heavy Rain but it's so different to anything I've played, I may give Fahrenheit a go on the PC to first to see if it's my sort of game.
#34
i would go for this brand new fats won't be available for long and with geohotz getting an exploit ps3 may get hacked and can only be hacked from Linux which the slim cant access and plus the fat looks better in my opinion with the shiny surface and touch sensitive buttons rather than the rough dull surface and the buttons.

This model can't play PS2 game but i think it can play physical PS1 disks.

And with reliability the fats are pretty reliable bought my 60gb on release with some crashes but been crash free for over a year now. There are the occasional ps3 which breaks down but would say thats pretty rare.
#35
for the record, PS1 compatibility on the PS3 (all models) is not quite universal. None of the ones I have have failed to work, but I have heard there are a handful of PS1 games which were written in a way that Sony asked people not to, which will no longer work on a PS3.

Personally I think this is a good deal - 80Gb is plenty big enough for gaming, if you want a media server, you can easily stream music pictures and video to your PS3. This model is *so* much more attractive than the newer model, although i've heard the slim runs cooler, and quieter. and £40 odd will get you a fair few pre-owned games these days. hot from me.

weird why anyone would vote this hot when the 120gb slim is only £17 more

George Hotz's hack would probably work on any phat, but I don't think he has any plans to release it because he doesn't want to get blamed by Sony if the PS3 gets pirated the way the PSP has. There are rumours Sony will release a firmware patch to remove the option to install OtherOS anyway. But if Hotz releases his hack before Sony do that, then yes!
#40
For the people asking can the PS3 be hacked, no, not in the way you want. Unless you have an interest in Linux, hardware security implementations and possibly gaining RSX support then you'll not see anything for a very long time (and even that's not guaranteed). The current 'hack' does require the Other OS feature.
