Can anyone confirm if you do get Quidco on the item and if so, how much. Are there any other cashback sites that offer a good cashback deal with play.com.
#2
Sounds like a good deal to me, voted hot.

I did a little research on the PS3 and not only do the hard disk size change in certain models but also other components.

I found that if you have a collection of PS2 games, the PS3 60gb model is the most backward compatable from all the models available. Its also my understanding that sony are starting to phase the 60gb model out.
#3
Does anyone if and when the new bigger HDD PS3's get released will they contain all the features of the 60GB version i.e. card reader etc, or will they be like the 40GB models and have nothing?
#4
It is unclear as to if the 80GB will have all the features of the 60GB or the lack of features of the 40GB. Personally if you want backwards comp then I would advise you to get the 60GB and then if you need a larger HDD you can just install one yourself very easily and without any issues.

Rumour has it 80gb ps3 will run ps2 games - not emulated but properly

OMG, dont know what to do now. If I get the 60gb one the bigger HD might be slightly better. But if I hold out for the bigger HD ones the 60gbs might be sold out by then.
#7
Sales suggest that the high end model sells better in the US. Under this assumption Sony would be retarded not to bring out a unit that is at a higher spec. There's clearly a demand for it.

But they want to lower the perception of the brand from a premium device to a sub £300 device.

Anyone know if you can attach a bluetooth/wireless keyboard and mouse onto the PS3, so i can surf the net while sitting on the couch? Also what web browser does it run?

I can't see that happening, the reason they've discontinued trying to support PS2 games is that they are trying to gain more revenue from sales of PS3 games

They've pretty much said if a game works now under emulation, it will continue to work on the 60gb model, if not, well, don't expect it to work anytime in the future

Yes and yes, it has it's own browser [similar to that of the PSP] (not the likes of Opera with the Wii)

To clarify the Back Compatibility:
20Gb PS3 (JAPAN/US) - PS2 Hardware Emulation
40Gb PS3 (ALL MODELS) - No PS2 Emulation
60Gb PS3 (JAPAN/US) - PS2 Hardware Emulation
60Gb PS3 (EUROPE) - PS2 Software Emulation
80Gb PS3 (JAPAN/US) - PS3 Software Emulation

Hardware Emulation - Essentially the PS3 has a PS2 inside. Not unlike how the original PS2 had a PS1 inside. The smaller PS2 emulates PS1 games in software. Hardware emulation means these PS3 models will play 90%+ of all PS2 games.
Software Emulation - PS2 games are emulated, requiring much less of the original PS2 to play (the GPU of a PS2 still used inside). Software emulation requires rewritten code for every single PS2 game, therefore this can play approx 2000 PS2 games. This is similar to how the Xbox 360 emulates old Xbox games. New games can be added to the support list by Firmware updates, but Sony's new stance on back-compat means it's unlikely to be a priority, if ever updated again.
No PS2 Emulation - Sony have removed all PS2 hardware from the PS3, therefore no emulation in these models.

All PS3's can emulate PS1 games, again this depends on the game you intend to play but most are compatible.

Sony are more likely to keep bringing the cost of the PS3 down, and as such PS2 backwards compatibility is one way they intend to do that. Do not expect any future models of the PS3 to have hardware emulation, or software emulation in its current form.

It's more likely Sony may in the future figure out how to emulate PS2 games entirely on the PS3 hardware, you never know!

Hope that helps

I really dont see the big deal about backwards capability, if you have ps2 games you will already own a ps2, if you dont you are harldy going to go out and buy them when you have PS3 games to play.

Netfront by Access, Co.

You find Netfront on the PSP, some Palm PDA's, mobile phones.

The PS3 uses the exact same browser in the PSP, only it has more memory and screen space at its disposal.

The PS3 upscales your PS2 games to 1080p much like it upscales DVDs to 1080p, playing God of War 2 in upscaled 1080p is fantastic. Also many people only want one/two consoles under their tele and so having both a PS3 and PS2 isn't neccessary with a 60gb model. This is not entirely true though as not all PS2 games are compatible - only half of mine are, but then I have some rather odd J-RPG titles that no-one else bought!

Some people just like one console under their TV. Of course because the PS2 did backwards compatibility to PS1 so well, it's perceived in some circles that some people may expect backwards compatibility of the PS3.

Even Sony are changing their minds, one of the bosses saying if you want to play PS2 games, keep your PS2.

Spot on! And you can sell your old console for £40+ on ebay further reducing the PS3 outlay. Common sense really :whistling:

From what I've heard the 80gb model will emulate the ps2 via hardware and not software. I thought the reason for the 40gb model was so sony had an excuse to stop writing the ps2 emulation software on the 60gb as they couldn't get the latest games to work and other games had problems.

The 80Gb model in the US/Japan uses Software Emulation. Other than its larger hard drive, its exactly the same as the 60Gb model we get in the UK.

Good deal, voted Hot, only £30 quid more than 40gb model, yet better spec and free games. Bargain.

Why are people waiting for the 80gb version? The last I heard is that the 40gb SKU will be the only one for us european suckers according to this quote:

Sony says backwards compatibility "less important than when we launched".

Sony will not be bringing an 80GB PS3 to the UK once stock of the 60GB model runs out, a Sony spokesperson has confirmed.

Following the previous announcement that the £349 60GB PS3 bundle that includes two first-party titles is only going to be available for a limited time, UK gamers had hoped Sony would be bringing the 80GB model, already out in the US, to our shores.

However, in a statement Sony Computer Entertainment Europe said that "as the 60GB stock is depleted the £299 40GB sku will be the only version available going forward".

Gamers considering whether to invest in a PS3 this Christmas will at least for now have two versions of the console to choose from - the £349 60GB model and the £299.99 40GB model.

Sony also addressed concerns over a lack of backwards compatibility in the new 40GB version, saying: "The only functionality that is being removed is backwards compatibility - and this is because we believe this is less important now than when we launched - as there will be 65 PS3 games available by Christmas. Furthermore we believe we should now be devoting our resources to the future of PlayStation gaming and delivering next generation experiences."

Sony added that gamers would be able to upgrade the 40GB model so that it would have all the "missing" features from the 60GB model.

"The 40GB machine represents all the power and potential of PlayStation 3 at a very compelling price. Whilst the feature set of the 40GB is a result of extensive feedback and research, all the 'missing' features should some consumers require them are easily upgraded with USB memory card readers, USB hubs, or bigger external USB or internal Hds", the statement said.

The PS3 runs the exact same browser as the PSP...however, i purchased Yellow Dog Linux for the PS3 from ebay for £2 and now i have Open Office (similar to Microsoft Office but not so fancy) as well as Mozilla Firefox to browse the web with.

With regards to your question about whether to wait for the 80GB or get the 60GB one, i would suggest that your purchase the 60GB version. If you really need an extra 20GB of memory like others have said you can simply replace the hard drive inside yourself which is very simple (lots of videos on Youtube) or you can simply attach an external hard drive of whatever size quantity.

My PS3 is basically a super computer! It can play games, send emails, write documents and letters, create spreadsheets, surf the net, playback Divx, Xvid files, playback Blu-Ray, Upscales old PS2 games and DVDs. The only thing dissapointing with the PS3 in general is the lack of game titles (which is what ppl really want) but i suppose its only been out for 8 months...would like to see much more appear within the next 6 months. I still prefer gaming on my 360.

When did you see this deal? If it was real, it would have been a mis price and then corrected quickly.

Also, the 60gb has been out of stock for nearly a week at Amazon.

Nice one - managed to get it ordered before the price went back up to £349.99. Heat given.
