I presume these are going down in price as a Freeview HD version is not far away?
#9
I'm tempted by this - just got a PS3 to act as a media server in Living Room - but does it use much more power than a traditional Freeview box with HDD?

I have a Sagem one at the mo, but the menu is crappy - i'd happily swap it out for this if it's not gonna put my Elec bill through the roof.

I have the new Slim model if that makes a difference?

more likely that theyve got a crap load of overstocks to get rid of from xmas
#11
Do you think that a new box will be required for Freeview HD (suppose a firmware update wouldn't allow this existing box to be used?)

I'm not too fussed as I will need to upgrade the HDD before I record HD (as have an older model)
#12
Play TV HD On the way?

no good for me anyway. internet + rapidshare account > PTV.
#13
don't know if someone had this issue

before upgrading to the new slim ps3, i had the play tv on my phat ps3 and all the recordings used to show a preview with thumbnails of the videos, since i had the new slim ps3 and installed the play tv, i now only get the recordings as a list and no way i can find to switch to the better thumbnail layout

i have updated the play tv to the latest version as well and uninstalled/installed it twice

any ideas how to get that back??

Firmware update 1.21 updated PS3 consoles to support HD freeview programmes (as France etc already use Freeview HD) but it wont work in the UK, as the UK is switching to DVB-T2 which isnt supported by the current box. Its a bit stupid considering the rest of europe is sticking to DVB-T, but i have no idea what difference it makes on the technical side of things.

Considering PlayTV was developed in the UK, I'm guessing Sony will have something to satisfy us, but it may be a year or two before anything happens.

You need to go into your recordings library then press X on any recording.

A a pop-up screen will then pop up. At bottom of that pop-up screen there is an option to change from list to thumbnails.

Went to Currys to get them to price match this to the Game instore deal before Christmas - and they wouldn't, and I couldn't be arsed over the £10 so bought it for £40.
Saw this in Toys-r-us for £30 yesterday too.

They're very good. I've got Sky+ and find myself now recording freeview things on the PS3 because it's then ready to play back for ever more - whereas on Sky anything you want to keep you have to then burn off onto DVD. If you want it in file format, you then have to convert it - so having it in file format to copy around everywhere is superb.

The major, major bug-bear I've got with it is that the file format (m2ts) doesn't play on the PSP. If you could simply dump recorded tv onto the PSP and then watch on the way to work then the whole PS3/Play TV/PSP combo would be perfect.

 So, this is sort of like Sky+ then?

I have freeview built into my TV, but only have an old fashioned VCR (how outdated am I), so if I buy this can I then record Freeview programmes and 'normal' channels as well? I assume it is straight forwards for a technophobe such as I ? Also, can I record something whilst watching a video? Thanks

Yes, similar to Sky+ in the fact you can record TV from the listings.

You can record any signal the box recieves - so Freeview and Ch 1-5 are recordable.

Very straightforward - plug into your PS3, install the software and then navigate to the Play TV icon.

It has a twin tuner, so you can record something whilst watching another channel or watching a video.

You can't be that much of a technophobe if you have a PS3 under your TV? If you don't have a PS3 under your TV, you could look at alternatives like FreeSat or a PVR (Freeview box with HDD) rather than buying a PS3 and Play TV. Saying that, the PS3 will bring you up to date, and let you watch BluRay movies too.

I love my Play tv but even before I got it I have an annoying error on my Phat PS3.

It usually happened while watching videos on the web but in regards to play tv, when I first load it up after about five minutes (on any channel or recording) the sound and picture start to flicker out. After it goes crazy for a bit the picture and sound come back fine and will work okay again until I quit out and come back in again. This error is not recorded it just seems to affect the picture for a bit. Has anyone else had this error because I can't find anything on the Sony Website about it. My mate says he has it to so I'm not alone. It's annoying but it still does work.

Please help :(

Play TV is supposed to support Freeview HD. It has the technology for it .
#23
This is going to sound like a silly question but can this be connected directly to a Sky+ box? I don't have an aerial connected to my house, I rely upon Sky for my TV signal input.

I often run out of space on my Sky+ box and wondered if connecting the box to this device is compatible and would allow me to recod onto either device.

Thanks!
#24
No LionJ - no chance at all.
This does work with a PC if you install the right software - so you can record telly on that. But the Sky+ box wouldn't have a clue what it was or how to use it.

You should google upgrading your sky+ hard disk. It's pretty easy to do, or there should be places that would do it for you. Or buy a dvd recorder, and record your sky+ programmes onto that....that way you can keep it forever.

Not heard of this before. Is your PS3 software up to date? (There was a Play TV specific update a few months ago that upscaled the picture quality as this is something the PS3 is very good at)
