This model doesn't use the touch screen layer, it's uses IR, and so doesn't suffer from reflection at all. Hot. 8)

Huh?

No it is an e-ink e-reader made by Sony, the original iPad is an LCD tablet made by Apple, quite simple really.

Not really, don't understand why ask a ridiculous question to start with!

Hot added. Thanks OP!

Big advantage of this over the Kindle is that you can borrow ebooks from the library, with none of the hassle of visiting it to borrow or return the books.

Wife got one for Christmas - the screen is excellent and the form factor perfect.

Highly recommended.

It is like an iPod touch just larger ;)

Utter garbage when compared to the Kindle which is just a tenner more (I bought at £109 before VAT increase, and it's been brilliant)
Cold for me.

If you have calibre you can also view them on a Kindle :)

Never seen/used one, but good price, voted hot

For an extra tenner or so, the Kindle is a MUCH better deal IMHO.

Larger high contrast 6" screen with latest e-Ink technology, capacity for 3,500 books, charge lasts for one month and has wi-fi. [dearer model also has 3G]

The only thing it isn't compared to the lesser Sony, is touchscreen as far as I can see - no big deal.

EDIT

Oops! Beaten to it by PhilK.

And yes, the Calibre program is great for conversions if you need it. http://calibre-ebook.com/download

Any more info on that? never heard of 'jailbreaking' a kindle
#19
Why would you jailbreak a kindle, if you are not developing applications for it?
You can convert if needs be, and many places with free (out of copyright) have non encrypted azw files as an option, else you can convert either freely through Amazon (wifi delivery), with the aforementioned calibre, or it may be supported, like for example pdf and mobo files.
I regularly rekindle.it web pages and read them on my Kindle too, which is effortless and great.

Excellent price, I had a 'Sony Refurbished' one on order for £90 + £9.82 delivery, luckily stock hasn't arrived and payment details hadn't been taken.

Just cancelled it and got one of these new ones for 17p more.

Plus I'll get TCB on the eBay purchase, making it cheaper.

Would love to get my hands on the 650, the bigger brother of this 350.
Mind you, this is definitely tempting...
#23
I meant JB a Kindle, would like different screensavers, the ones on there bug me now :)

E-Ink needs a screen saver? Can you burn txt into a ebook reader screen by leaving it up too long?
#25
Hot for price, but i still prefer the Kindle.

There is no 'burn in' It is a lock screen basically, so that you don't change pages (which uses energy) when it is not in use.

There are ways to change the kindle wallpapers, and it doesn't void your warranty.
Here is one guide:

I don't think this is true, when you get books from the library they are DRM'd (protected) and as far as I'm aware Calibre cannot convert these to Kindle format. I see this as being a real Pro for the Sony as my local library has loads of books available in digital format so it wont cost me a penny to read them, unlike the Kindle where I have to buy the books (and only from Amazon!).

There's always a way.........

Worth about £40 max due to the screen size and the kindle being twice as good.

Kindle uses pearl ink doesn't it, only the newer sony use pearl.

The PRS-x50 range are the new ones. Both this and the PRS-650 are pearl screens.

Okay, why is the Kindle twice as good. As explained earlier, the Sony's allow for borrowing of ePub DRM books from libraries, Kindles has no support for ePub.

The screen size is a bonus because you can actually fit it in a pocket, hence why it's called the POCKET EDITION.

i personally prefer a touch screen over the kindle's buttons but i'm waiting on a deal for the 650, as i'd prefer a 6" screen
#35
Wife has this one and I have the Kindle, we both agree this is good but the Kindle is better....hot though.
#36
I am torn between this and the Kindle. I was all set to buy the Kindle when I discovered that you can't borrow library books on it. I'm not sure whether this is a deal breaker.... Is there a way to do it? Someone hinted earlier that there might be. If there is, can someone point me in the right direction...

I've half a mind to buy both and then sell on whichever one I like least. Bound to lose some money though...

The Kindle is by no means "twice as good". It's comparing cheese and chalk really - the 350 is purposely small to easy to carry around with you. If you want a smaller reader it's the only contender.

To compare like-for-like you need to compare the PRS-650, which has the same screen as the Kindle, but a much nicer and sturdier finish, better handling of PDF files, the ability to borrow ebooks from the local library and reads .EPUB files - all of which beats the Kindle. It's also not restricted just to Amazon. So for me the Sony Reader beats the Kindle by some margin - it's more expensive, but you get what you pay for.

Same here but she has the Sony 505. I would like the user interface and features of the Kindle but the build quality and steel body of the Sony.

It depend's entirely on your criteria. It's by no means clear cut. If you want a 6 inch screen the Kindle's a good option (though the Sony PRS-650's a better one). If you want something you can carry around put in your pocket and is amazingly light, the 350 wins hands down. If you want 3G you should go for the Kindle. For me all of these readers hold so many books you should never have to download anything "on the go", so it's a non issue really. Other advantages of the 350 are EPUB support without messing around converting the files, and ability to borrow free ebooks from the library.

I can put any photo I want onto my 650 as a screen saver so when it goes on standby up they go. That's without any jailbreaking. Hope this helps
