*Looks at my YLOD PS3 sitting in the corner* :-(
#2
It still seems like a lot... you know.
Not voting if this is what they still fetch.

Quicker playback than the majority of £100 Blu Ray Players and the inbuilt wifi comes in handy instead of an ethernet connection for BD Live...oh, and its at last starting to show signs of promise as a games machine finally lol.

Fully appreciate, but it's still preowned and i'm not really sold on Blu-ray.
It's just a storage device that can hold data the PS3 can't read or process fast enough for gaming, or great for 1080p video.

I bought a 360 at launch and built a gaming rig this year so the PS3 doesn't really fit into my situation, though there are a handul of exclusives I would play.

The hardware just seems expensive and not essential in these circumstances

All you need to do is go , to ebuyer, play.com or amazon and get a bigger hard drive for 30 notes and you have a super fat beast....
#6
You can extend the warranty instore at Gamestation though? A PS3 for under £200 with a 3 yr warranty would be good value.

Maybe, but these things just use to much electricity for what they do, compared to just a bluray player as you have just said, compare how much power they draw. Its sad to say but energy is never going to get cheaper.

Yeah, the PS3 slim has its advantages (lower wattage + Bitsteaming), but still draws more power than a conventional Blu Ray Player, but then unless you are hard wiring it to your router you have to also weigh in the wattage useage of homeplugs or a Wi-Fi Access Point connected to your Blu Ray Player.

is the currys deal still on? it cost me £181 for a brand new slim 120gb ps3

i think your either mad, or just stupid. i think you'll find the ps3 is plenty fast enough for 1080p videos. I don't know of many other machines that can cope with 100mbps+ video streams.....do you?

i realise that a test like above is not realistic of actual viewing, but it shows it is plenty fast enough, I would imagine the ps3 could (if there was any way to try it) decode several 1080p movies at once.

it's picture quality is also very good, and better than the £100 players i've used (on interlaced discs).

Just to let you know it seems the fans on these 40gb models like to be loud.

Playing Uncharted, Uncharted 2, Read Dead all make my fan go crazy after playing for a few minutes.
#12
these ps3 (after the 60gb BC ones) are second most prone to YLOD.. the chips (+cooling) in them are prone to overheating..

wouldn't touch them for this price.. they are a false economy..

don't believe me?? see for yourself on ebay.. ebay listings for YLOD ps3 are littered with 60gb BC and 40GB consoles..

edit:

avoid the 90nm RSX

I have a phat 40gb model and I love it but personally I would try and get a slim model if you can afford it, perhaps wait for a deal. Only saying slim because reliability and power usage.

Either way welcome to the club, now get yourselves a copy of Demon's Souls and regret buying a PS3
#14
My 40gb is still going strong from its release date all be it with a 320gb hdd
#15
Still seems a hell of a lot for a pre-owned couple of years old console. My new slim didn't cost that much more with some games thrown in
#16
Would this play ps2 games or not?
#17
It doesnt....only the 60gb original model does
#18
Ahh, hot maybe in terms of shop deals, but eBay is always the place to look

A couple of months ago I got a 250gb slim PS3 with 11months warranty, COD6 and a steering wheel for little over £200. You just have to have a look around

lol @ you if you bought a PS3 to play Demon Souls. Also, really hate how everytime a console deal gets posted someone has to comment on how they have a 360 and thus find the PS3 useless to them. Or vice versa. To that dunce who said the PS3 struggles to handle 1080p, what the hell are you smoking and can I have some?

Gotta vote cold on this deal though. Even though it's the cheapest price for a 40gb I've seen, you're much better getting a slim. As already said, the slim consumes less power, is much more reliable and is very quiet.
#20
Moka-bear,
I purchased my PS3 in Dec 2007 to play Uncharted, which is the first game since tomb raider that interested me.
And tomb raider 1 was the reason I purchased a PS1

This isn't a hot price for a 2nd hand 40gb PS3. Get a brand new 120gb slim for a bit more - Aren't they something like £217 with a chart game in ASDA? Yes you have the warranty at game - but you still have the hassle of it being sent away and repaired, unless they just swap it for another, in which case you just have the hassle of losing all your game saves..........Also realistically if you expect these to do 5 years service without problems, you are looking at these packing up in around 18 months / 2 years - ie outside the warranty period.

EDIT

Slim is £217 and the game is extra at ASDA......still better than this imo
#22
My advice get the 80GB phat model.

Or get the CECH-2103 slim model.

Don't get any others. But still voted hot.

They swap in store and if they're nice/you ask nicely can swap the hard drive over too.

I'd rather have a phat model over the slim as it looks a hell of a lot better! Just buy one of these and put a large drive in it :-D

Also, although the slim uses less power, it is always in stand-by unless you switch it off at the wall (not easy for some if you can't get to the power sockets behind your TV). At least the phat model has an "off" switch on the rear of the console.

#25
They've got 60GB preowned 360s for £110 as well.

Maybe he means 1080p from the blu-ray drive for games?
obviously the cpus can handle quite a lot

I'm in similar situation have an xbox and pc-with BR drive - have also a shelf full of games
Thanks to this site - Darn it lol
but ps3 is a descent enough machine

Nice troll. I take it you've been living under a rock the last few years or only have a casual interest in gaming? The PS3 has been showing its promise for a few years now.

Considering most games are multi platform and appear on both PS3 and 360, would you say that the 360 is also just 'starting to show signs of promise as a games machine'?

As for the deal, £170 for a 40GB PS3 is not good at all.

Yeah, also the phats are also most prone to the YLOD. :whistling:

I paid £180 for my 80gig brand new in January

Seems a bit pricey for a pre-owned imo
#32
Still got my 60GB backwards compatible model here, best model they ever did in my opinion.

No problems yet, touch wood. Still, this is a good price for a pre-owned 40GB, just make sure you get one in good condition ;)

I still have my Launch day 60gb, never had a problem. Also have a 40gb fat which I have had for a good year or so now. No problems with that either. Percentage wise is YLOD a major issue?

i had the original 60GB beast

now i was thinking of getting a slim, however i was playing a friends new slim 250gb and it seems somewhat odd, what i mean to say is the games are not as smooth as on my old 60gb, the same games.

not sure if they have less performance than the original.. any i waiting for the CECH-2100 model with 40nm RSX which is more eco friendly than current slim

Cold. Its too PHAT
#37
that's not worth it, i bought mine a month ago from gamestation
got 80GB and I am Legend Blu Ray for that price

I don't think it's a major issue. I had a friend who got a launch day 60gb and it crashed 2 month ago. Another friend had his crash last year. But I know 3/4 people who still have theirs. Though I haven't heard of anyone with a slim getting YLOD. May still be possible but definitely a very low chance.
#40
Yes YLOD is a fairly big issue, but there are other problems. Sony killed my (and many other users consoles with an update), their reply was "it wasn't us (as the firmware is a closed software no one can prove otherwise completely), and they insist on almost as much as the console costs upfront for them to "look at it". That's correct they may not be able to fix it.

If you do find yourself in this position, say good by to all save games you may have ( made all my games worthless as I couldn't face playing all the way through everything again to reach the same point).
