If this is not region free out of the box (and the same model at Argos is region 2 not region free) then it is difficult to hack it.

You will need a palm pilot and some software

Region code hack posted by alski6, September 28 2007:
Download "Novii remote deluxe" from a site of the manufacturer

Install novii remote in yours PocketPC or Palm.
Install to (move to) 'novii folder'/Codebases/ file 'DVD_sony_0.pdb'.
Power on your player without a disk (the tray is closed).
Start on yours PocketPC(Palm) the program 'novii remote'.
Select 'DVD_sony_0'. Direct the infra-red port your PocketPC(Palm) on dvd-player.
Press the buttons "1","2","3","4","5".
Press the buttons "1","2","3","4","5".

Superb DVD recorder for less than £80 BUT unfortunately the tuner is only analogue!
#7
has it got cbeebys and cbbc

katie it will only have channel 1-5 if it is analogue but if you have a digibox there is no reason why you couldnt wire it through the recorded and record it as an av via scart.

Thats actually a plus! esp when freeview is 5 years away for some of us
voted hot as a freeview tuner is useless to a lot of people

That wouldn't be a problem for me, I want a decent recorder to produce the rare hard copy of stuff I've already recorded to PVR hard drive along with good quality playback.

However, I'm unable to find any reviews, professional or user, on this model. :?

It's certainly a good price; £131 at Jessops.

A plus??? How??? When you say 'a lot of people' are you referring to areas that can't receive freeview signals well or not at all. I thought this was a minority. Most HUKD members can receive freeview so to say a freeview tuner is useless to 'a lot' of people doesn't make any sense as it would offer much sharper picture quality and so many more channels over an analogue tuner.

If people already have freeview built in to their TV or by set top box they will not benefit from the accessibility and convenience of timer record when different freeview channels (other than BBC1 to Channel 5) are required. A DVD recorder with a built in freeview tuner will not restrict a recording to one freeview channel when away.

I also voted hot because it still represents excellent value for money. This machine is ideal if you have a PVR without DVD and want to back-up or achive. I felt that any members interested in buying this model should be aware that it doesn't include a freeview tuner. Simply as that!

It also may be important to some that I think this recorder does not record onto DVD-R and -RWs. However, this will not concern most.

Comments from AV forum (bear in mind the poster is a Sony sales rep ;-) )
Its a new model which, in effect, replaces the old RDR-GX120 model. Operationally it seems to be more confidence inspiring than the 120 was and it has the advantage of the HDMI upscale which works extremely well. Its only major drawback is the lack of Freeview tuner. It's a product we would primarily recommend to Sky or cable customers who want a DVD recording and high quality playing facility. If you don't use Sky or cable you would be better off with something that includes a Freeview tuner. Currently in the Sony range, that means moving up to the RDR-HXD870. As yet there is no announcement of a replacement for the old RDR-GXD360 which DID include a freeview tuner.
To sum up, the 350 is a nice machine with good picture quality as long as you are not bothered by the lack of digital tune.
No trace of it at Sony UK but the Latvian site has a spec. (in English) and the manual is available here.

They are the same company. The only real difference is that Sound & Vision have a shop too so you could go in and buy it.... but the stock comes out of the same place and is delivered by the same delivery people.

has anyone got this yet that can give a review

i have heard mentioned that on some sonys you cant pause a recording to remove adverts you have to stop the recording thus making an hour long programme 3 separate titles not one with adverts removed

also seen mentioned of lip sync issues

infact the sonys have quite a few compliants on avforums

anybody got one that can answer these questions

my dvdr packed up last week could do with another one

I've got an older Sony model from about two years ago, it cost a lot more than this but it did just about everything I wanted it to.

I'm tempted by this now though as the older one didn't do both types of DVDR or have HDMI. The thing about removing adverts is an issue though as I want to copy from Sky+ to DVD for keeping long term. If this one works the same as mine it would create a new chapter for each time you paused the recording. For this I think a DVD recorder with build in hard drive would probably give you the option to remove them more easily.

Does anyone know which does this best, the Sony or a Panasonic? (The Panasonic would match my Viera I suppose :) )

Agreed not a plus for many but certainly for some & I guess a company like Sony has to cater for both DVB & analogue markets. The plus side on the analogue front is that Sony (can) make extraordinary analogue tuners that near damn rival DVB.
#22
Unless you can't receive DVB, current Sony analogue tuners will never rival their own digital (freeview) tuners for two obvious reasons, picture quality and channel quantity.

Remember, analogue tuners can also suffer reception problems due to surroundings and adverse weather conditions.

You have overlooked the £9.99 P&P.

As the OP has done, HUKD members are expected to include any P&P costs when submitting a deal.

Does this only upscale to 1080i through HDMI or will it do 720p etc as well, and does it have a tostock (optical) output?

Flubster

[Edit] I've found a manual in cz and it does allow 720i and has a coaxial digital out not tostock

Providing you use DVD RWs this shouldn't be a problem if this player has A-B erase within the edit features. You can erase the ads out afterwards. I own a Sony RDR-GXD360S DVD recorder which has this feature and would guess the 350 has too. You could email Sony to check.

I think Sony make the best DVD recorders but I do rate Panasonic highly. As you have a Viera, you may have remote control synchronization benefits if you go for a Panasonic.

With my Humax PVR it's easy to edit out start & end padding and adverts on the Humax, then archive. Doesn't the Sky+ box do this? :?

My GX350 arrived an hour ago, excellent picture quality from DVD and controls the Toshiba TV sound, channels and input select no problem (manual gives remote codes for popular TV brands). No comment on the analogue tuner, I shan't even be setting it up.

Seems a nice box for a select market - people with a digital hard-disk recorder of some form who just want a decent player and a "keepers" recorder from the hard disk and maybe their VHS tapes.

And a thumbs-up to Digital Direct (and City Link), they told me it would come today and it did.

It does have edit features inc A-B erase and chapter split/erase providing the DVD is -R or -RW and VR formatted - "playable only on VR mode compatible players". Manual linked in post#13 for full details.
