Sony Reader PRS-505 - £74.99 Toys R Us instore

£74.99 @ Toys R Us
Was shocked when I seen this instore in the Toys R Us, Aberdeen. Sony PRS-505 for £74.99 down from £159.99. I have no idea whether it's nationwide or just local. Photo: http://img203.imageshack.us/… Read More

wat the h**l is that ?
#2
if this is there kindle like reader then its because it's rubbish.......
#3
What a great price! I would go and get one now but no local store :-(
#4
isnt this all about the availability of books tho? The kindle has the biggest range, but if you download em from amazon they ONLY work on the kindle.

doesnt really matter how cheap this is if you cant get anything decent to put on it
#5
Nope, not rubbish -an excellent reader at a really good price. Only downside is there is no connectivity as with the kindle, but with planning it is not needed (yet anyway - until more UK specific content is available).

If you are lucky enough to get one, don't forget to download Calibre, and check out MobileRead forums.

Heat and rep.

Regards,

White.

not quite as good as the PRS300, but still a very good price

I'd say it's better than the prs300 - the prs505 has a more useful bigger screen of similar quality, sd card slot and similar responsiveness/speed.
#8
Did you manage to get a barcode or item code?
#9
None in Nottingham - last one sold a long time ago :-(

The Gadget show had e-book readers on test last night. You can watch it at -

Worth a look maybe sony was hard to read in sunlight.
#11
Hi,

Which Toys R Us in Aberdeen? Were there any left after you got this one?

Thanks
#12
This is a great ebook reader! Definitely worth buying at this price!
#13
Absolutely HOT! I bought mine last year at John Lewis for £149 which was a very good price at that time. For half the price, it's a steal!

And not rubbish by any means. As someone said earlier, download Calibre and enjoy not only ebooks but also lots of newspaper and mags in electronic version.
#14
The 505 is better than Sony's latest offerings. The internal memory may be smaller (buy an SD card or Memory stick) but the screen is much better and the page update is quicker.

Great, especially at this price:thumbsup:

There's a photo of the barcode bit.

The reader on the Gadget show was the new touch model, the screnn is different, I have this model and there is no problem with reading it. This is an excellent bargain. Plenty of books available at cheap prices if you use a certain website. (Nudge nudge wink wink).

There's some truth to that but I've bought quite a few books from places like fictionwise without any issue. There's also a lot of free content out there that can let you get your moneys worth (at least at this price).

It's a bit more work getting content on it than the Kindle (use Calibre as mentioned) but it's not as though you need to put books on it constantly. Stick 4-5 books on it and that should give most people enough to read for a while.

It really is a good reader. I found it much easier to read The Dome by Stephen King recently than carrying around a massive hardback book, not to mention the ease of carrying this while travelling than 4-5 books.

Nope not a mis-price, just very old stock. We have had these from the original launch date (3 years ish) and most of the stock is ex-display - but still very good. Also not alot of stores have stock left !

Erm, the PRS 505 launched in October 2008 didn't it?!

3 years ish = 15 months!

The iPad makes this look like a typewriter, but at a third of the cost i suppose.

I know a lot of Microsoft Press books come with an ebook version, significantly easier to carry around than the original book, but this is not limited to ebooks, it also views PDF files which are easy to make.

Plus the previously mentioned Calibre (ebook library management) allows you to create ebooks from RSS feeds and websites to view on the PRS505, I create my own 'newspaper' from my rss feeds and view it on the PRS505.

Some authors also release free ebooks of their latest novel to generate interest.

Then there's the Public Domain classics from places such as Project Gutenburg.

Of the 400+ 'ebooks' on my PRS505, I haven't actually paid for a single one!
