Has anybody any idea how to replace the drive with this on a Dell Inspiron 6000 :-o

For info on how to remove your drive see the dell support web pages, IIRC you undo 1 screw underneath on the 6000 and it releases the drive. You may need specific drivers for the drive though for its full potential but I'm sure XP will have that covered, at least enough to get by.
Give lowestonweb a call if your unsure.

Generally laptop optical drives have common mounting screw holes and common IDE connectors.

So as previously mentioned if it not obvious which screws hold the drive into your Dell laptop, check on Dells website.

But you will have to swap the IDE interface over from your existing drive. This is the easy bit. there will be a small card on the back of the existing drive that converts the standard IDE connector to a Dell specific connector and is held in place by a few small screws. These convertor cards will normally fit onto any optical drive.

The problem normally comes with the front bezel. If your Dell has a shaped / deicated bezel then you will have to either try and swap the bezel onto the new drive or live with the bezel that comes with the drive even if it looks a bit odd in the laptop. The problem is that there is no common fitting for front bezels. Sometimes you can be lucky and you can swap them directly. sometimes you can "adapt" the old bezel to fit the new drive or you may have to adapt the new bezel to fit your laptop. This part of swapping optical drives is a bit of a lottery.

However if your Dell has a flat standard size bezel then it should be OK, just leave the bezel on the new drive.

Hope all this makes sense :-)

Thanks for the advice elitom. I've upgraded lots of laptops in the past with new optical drives and as you say the mounting is standard and the ide connector from the previous drive will work fine. I've also never had a problem with drivers as either Windows will have them already or they can be downloaded easily.

The big problem as you note is that if your laptop has a special front bezel there is a good chance it will not fit on the different drive. There seems to be a million ways to attach bezels to the front of the drive, they always just clip on/off but the way they physically attach varies wildly. It's possible you will get lucky and it will work but barring that what I've done occassionally in the past is to cut off the tabs from the bezel and glue the bezel directly on to the drive. It can work in a pinch but you will have to be creative ;)
