Good amp for the price. To pre-empt the inevitable cold voters, no, it does not do HDMI audio pass through, but the sound on these is amazing. Unless you are arsed about tru-hd sound then for the money you cant go wrong. I have the 3200es having upgraded from this and can vouch for it. Similar deal went hot for this at Richer Sounds for 199 recently so for me, hot!

Looks good to me.

I think this is exactly what I was looking for - the reviews posted on plays site are a bit of a mixed bag, but seems due to lack of knowledge than a performance issue with the amp. Before i order can anyone confirm this will work ok with the ps3 (I have an optical cable), and what exactly is the issue with HDMI???
#4
cheap ... but it's silver... :)
#5
Been looking at getting an onkyo but this might tip it!

Hot!

Its HDMI Switcher so no good for ps3 :( "If you want simplicity ie plug a hdmi from your dvd straight into this amp it won't output any sound via the surround sound speakers."
#7
hdmi audio is pointless unless you have 1G plus speakers and perfect ears.. iv recently got a sony amp and love it!
#8
Sorry for the cold but the STR-DG820 is a much better proposition in my opinion
does DTS Master Audio and True HD. and you can get this also for under £200.

Lets face it DVD's are dead Blu Ray is king for a while until films are done on solid state
and no one will provide ES anymore as its a legacy format.

In a word...no
#11
will work just fine with the ps3 using an hdmi lead and an optical cable - only thing you won't get is the hd audio codecs but will still be able to get dolby digital/dts audio without any problems

the issue with the hdmi is that it carries picture only, no sound so for any audio you will need another cables either a pair of interconnects or optical cable

its an old machine though have had 2 others since then
#12
excellent amplifier, i have one myself!

so any questions :)

I was talking about the hdmi issue with this unit - it was one of the first to have hdmi included but on this unit it only carries pictures no sound!!!!!! Read a spec sheet

Yes, and it's HD-audio at that! For the PS3 you need to explicitly tell it to output the audio over HDMI in the settings.

guys iam looking to set up home cinema can anyone suggest speakers small ones and im trying to fit tv on wall and have no idea on what cables i need as im going to plaster them behind tv any suggestions would be appreciated

Hot!

Get the Onkyo, you won't regreat it. Richer Sounds have some good deals on. I have the 606 model and it upscales all inputs so you only need one HDMI cabe running from it to the TV.

With this, for each type of input you have, you will need the same type of cable as an output e.g. 2 HDMI in and 2 component in would result in you needing a HDMI AND Component cable going to the TV. With the Onkyo, you only need HDMI

The slim does DTS HD over HDMI but will also do it via optical. It isn't a big issue to run an optical cable to the amp, but you could pick up a decent newer model receiver for slightly less if you wanted to test the water with a receiver set up

please ppl read what people type properly - also to point out again - this machine does not accept sound over HDMI so you will not be able to plug the PS3 into it without an optical cable and with the optical cable you will get no HD audio its physically impossible the optical cable to does not have the bandwidth to do it

Where do you find the STR-DG820 for under £200? Cheapest I can find is just under £250. (Oh, and it's discontinued).

It all depends on your budget and personal tastes.

If you're hiding everything behind the walls, then invest in decent cables and maybe leave a couple of extras in their for future expansion.

Here's some speakers:
http://www.richersounds.com/products/home-cinema/speakers/speaker-packages
and receivers:
http://www.richersounds.com/products/home-cinema/home-cinema-separates/av-receivers

You have options such as getting a decent AV receiver and cheaper speakers to start with before upgrading them at a later date

My bad - I did read incorrectly as people stating HDMI doesn't support audio, which it does. Indeed, this amp doesn't support taking the audio from hooked up HDMI connections.

This is probably a too specific of a question. But can anyone say whether this will be a good upgrade for me. Currently, I have a Onkyo TX-SR504 paired with KEF 2005.2 speakers.

prob but not massively - i would save up a little more and by a newer machine - this is a good sounding amp but spec wise is dated - to me i would not buy anything that didn't have hdmi that carried both picture and sound and as many as possible - my current amp has 4 and i have already run out!

nasir there is no simple answer to that but as a fellow weagie I'll try:thumbsup:

as for plastering in cables go for as many as your going to use now and in the future and your tv will allow for example a couple of hdmi cables, component, vga, power cable, etc a single hdmi cable will fill most of your needs but doesnt hurt to add an extra as they can fail!

as for small speakers Kef immediately spring to mind with something like this http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/530215/kef-kht2005-3-home-theatre-speaker-

however theres loads of cheaper all in one alternatives around £100 which actually sound quite good. I have a dedicated home cinema room but started off with a sony dvd player with built in amp and wee tiny speakers with passive subwoofer and was well impressed with them at the time.

go to av forums for advice and take a look at the members gallery for ideas and maybe take a run into richer sounds and see the speakers in the flesh to see what you like:thumbsup:

Hmm... If you're happy with the Onkyo probably not. I have this amp with the same KEF 2005.2 speakers. Despite being an excellent audio performer (especially with SACD/DVDA) your next upgrade might as well include all the latest HDMI standards. I know you'll regret it in a few months.

As a starter amp though it's potentially a very good purchase (I paid £279 in July 2007).

Yes I am happy with it, sound quality wise. Although, it produces a LOT of heat. I've been told it is normal. But I worry that in the cold weather the heat up and cool down of the amp may cause damage. Is there an optimum way to "warm-up/cool-down" your amp?

You're supposed to leave them on all the time. Now I pay for my own electricity that's something I refuse to do :p

I nearly bought an Onkyo (605 I think) but they do tend to run warm and that was one of my concerns. There isn't enough clearance in my setup because of the mammoth Denon 2900 DVD player.

In the end I couldn't afford the difference in price and desperately needed a new receiver so happily bought the Sony.

Stange, I've only got a £1 HDMI cable coming out the back of my Xbox360 into my TV but I hear sound fine. Care to explain? I'm no audio buff, I genuinely have no idea.

IS it plugged in? :p If the sound is like a jet engine, then it's your XBOX ;-)

HDMI cables carry sound, don't worry about it

would you care to read the whole thread - no one is disputing that hdmi cables carry both picture and sound - the querry is that the hdmi inputs on this amp only accept a picture signal not picture and sound!!! The statement above is from a line in the middle of two others discussing details purely related to this amplifier not hdmi cables or any other device!!!!

HDMI does carry audio. The confusion here is that this particular receiver cannot process the high-res audio tracks on Blu-ray discs.

this amplifier can't accept any sound of any format over hdmi - not just the new hd codecs - you have to use an optical cable or interconnects to get sound from any device to this amp.

from memory (but please check the manual as has been a number of years since i have owned one) this amp does have a full set of audio inputs so if you have a blu ray player that can decode the new hd sounds tracks internally and also has a full set of audio outputs Sony 760 does the sony 360 doesn't for example you can connect to this amp and have the full hd experience - the ps3 for example does not have a full set of outputs only hdmi or opitcal for sound

can anyone tell me if this will work ok with a set of tannoy efx 6.1 speakers, xbox 360 and sony hd tv?

cheers

I am sorry to go off topic but I am looking for a set of speakers and mplifier for my my 50" samsung and sony blueray (BDP-S560) both were excellent deals on HUKD (bennets electricals and electrical 123)..I am not keen on having multiple speakers and wiring everywhere so I looked at this samsung sound bar
http://www.1staudiovisual.co.uk/catalog/samsung-htws1-sound-speaker-p-7167.html
unfortunately i cant find any reviews on google so i want the expert opinion here please

I was looking at the STRDH800 (carries Audio over HDMI) but want to wait till its closer to the £200 mark

I was getting this because it will sort all my devices out without swapping cables...

Sky HD
Blu Ray
XB 360...

...All into the one receiver with one HDMI cable to the TV.

I can't do it any other way without swapping cables out as most AMP's have no more than 2x optical out
