Bonkers price on this quality AV receiver! The only drawback is that its not HDMI v1.4

Better than no-name brands like Onkyo ;-)

* 7.1 Channel AV Receiver
* Power 110W + 110W (8 ohms, 1kHz, 0.7% THD)
* HDMI In/Out: 4/1 (Repeater)
* New Audio Codec, DTS-HD Master Audio, Dolby True HD
* Newly improved GUI
* Upscale to Full HD 1080p
* BRAVIA Sync
* Digital Media Port
* 24P True Cinema / x.v.Colour
* 8 Channel Linear PCM
* Digital Cinema Sound
* Auto Calibration (DCAC)

Beware that play.com almost certainly don't have stock of this item (4-5 day dispatch means they're awaiting new stock, it's said 4-5 days for over two weeks now!) so most likely this is expired.

seems a very good price when you consider unheard of brands like onkyo are actually trying to charge more for similar spec!
#2
"no-name" brands like Onkyo - lol

Will this convert all inputs to HDMI? E.g. if I connect component Wii, do I need component output to the TV too, or will it chuck everything out of the HDMI? I'm sure this feature has a simple name, I just dont know it :p

according to the desription provided on the superfi webpage it will upscale all inputs.
so it should do what you ask.

Not only will it chuck component out of the HDMI it does an excellent job of upconverting to, you Wii will never have looked so good...or bad, depending on your point of view.

Most questions have been answered in the original thread, so look there for other answers.

Doesn't upscale HDMI inputs, only analogue

I decided to order but Play.com is saying "Awaiting Stock"... Bear that in mind if ordering.

Onkyo is like netto

Sony is like Harrods

good price anyway. and it would appear to have two front speaker outs. well worth 2 hundred quid.

Edited By: itsmeitis on Nov 01, 2010 13:25: added 9 speaker option

I have this amp, A very good amp with excellent reviews. GREAT price. I bought mine less than a year ago and paid £400, and that was a deal at RS's! Good find
#11
I've been eyeing the STR-DH810 recently.

Given the huge price drop, I would assume this is a better bet?
(HDMI 1.4 not really an issue as I have no intention of going the 3D route)

Thanks & ordered.

It upscales everything apart from HDMI. HDMI is a straight passthru of video (and decodes the audio - unlike cheaper hdmi receivers that just pass everything thru).

Seriously, all these people deriding Onkyo are clueless - they might not be as well known as Sony but the quality of the vast majority of their products is through the roof - on a par with Denon for the most part.

This is a great price for the Sony receiver but be warned - they're quite 'bright' sounding amps which can make a difference depending on the equipment you pair with it

Don't sweat it, it's just a dull ongoing HUKD joke.

Typical of badge snobs. I've got the Onkyo TR-875 for 3 years, one of the 1st to have TrueHD audio, handles all my input without problems - Wii, HTPC, CD player, etc. Still running top notch.

Heat added for a good deal tho.

The Onkyo stuff is an ongoing joke from an old HUKD thread :) Won't get a similar spec'd Onkyo for this money I don't think.

Just ordered one :)

How does the auto calibration work on this?
#28
what would be a good choice of speakers to pair this to?
#29
I have this sound system and it's fantastic, Bought it from Amazon for the same price last week, sounds amazing, only trouble is it's somewhat hard to set up, and refuses to accept a 5.1 system with 3 front speakers and 2 rear speakers, will only accept 3 rears and 2 fronts or 3 fronts and 2 sides.
The auto calibration is great though, very impressed with that. Well worth £199.99

I also just bought one last week. Pretty good so far having come from a non HDMI receiver (ohh the convenience!) although not really broken it in yet.

I am however having problems with a lot of HISS from my PC's TOS-Link source using DD-Live 5.1 at highish volume. Ive seen lots of people also experiencing this. Will have a play tonight to try and sort it... If not, its going back to Amazon :(
#33
It's been saying 4-5 day dispatch on play for ages, I cancelled my order as the woman couldn't tell me when they'd get stock when I rang up, so expired.

(Ordered from Amazon last week)

Probably not what you want to do, but I ordered the Tacima Mains Conditioner from Amazon and now I only get the hiss at ridiculous volumes (+3.0db) which isn't a problem for me because 1. I'll never crank it that high and 2. If the music is that loud you probably wouldn't hear the hiss anyway!

Before I used the mains filterer I was getting a hiss at ~-11.0db, which is still way too high for my tiny room anyway! It also seems to have improved the PQ of my TV lol

Just ordered one :)

How does the auto calibration work on this?

It has a small microphone attachment that you use on initial setup. You wire up all your speakers and whatever you want to attach to the receiver, and then the microphone measures the test tones coming from each speaker based on your usual seating position. From there it automatically sets each speaker, although you can fine tune each yourself manually.

It's reasonably easy to do; I got this receiver a couple of years ago with the KEF 2005.3 speakers and have really enjoyed using it on a daily basis.
