Sony isn't that a cheaper version of Onkyo!

Was previously £200 at Amazon and Play, but still a great price for a cracking piece of kit. Heat added.

May be a dumb question - but can I use this with just two speakers (ie, norrmal stereo) until I upgrade?
#5
Not a dumb question at all rincage, you certainly can use just two speakers. That's the beauty of separates, whilst ultimately they cost more, you can upgrade at your convenience. And they're usually better built (I've had a Yamaha home Cinema amp for over 10 years, even dropped it from a 5 foot shelf onto concrete and it still works fine!) and sound so much better, especially if you get the speaker positioning right.

Good luck if you go for it!

I would expect so... just disable the other speakers in the config. Not everyone has 7.1 speakers.

Fantastic amp. Got one in the £199 rush a few weeks ago - absolutely amazing sound quality...

Believe you can - can anyone confirm for sure?

Using one now with 2 speakers still sounds good

Any audiophiles around, or AVForum experts?
I have a a pair of floor standing speakers - Wharfedale Xarus 5000, which I use for listening to music, watching films and playing games. My old amp I was using broke a few months back and I have been waiting for a while for a good deal on an amp. Can I use this to run them and then add 5 more speakers later on to get a 7.1 system?

Any reply would be greatly appreciated, cheers.

I see no reason why not.

They will work fine and you can use unused back speaker terminals on the receiver to bi-amp the speakers for better sound.

Looks like they are selling out again now says 'Usually dispatched within 4-5 days'

I had a similar Sony AV amp once which gave me the option of Stereo from any input (5.1, dolby etc), most likely this has an option too..

unknown brand go for Onkyo!

No you can't. Learn some basic physics and you will understand that Bi amping is just a marketing gimmick to sell expensive cabling/amps. It makes no difference at all

Page 97 of user manual. Not sure about the physics involved!

Great price, voted hot..... but it won't route 3D signal will it? Not HDMI 1.4 spec.
#18
Seem to be awaiting stock... Lets see if Play cancel my order for the second time!
#19
But is it "really" in stock?? Hmmm

My order says "awaiting stock"

I had the same problem when I tried to order one last time this deal was on play for £200. Ended up giving up on it and ordered from Amazon. They still have stock for £250....

From what I gather, no it won't route 3D from bluray etc but will route Sky 3D because they use a different system(?).

Hate 3D so doesn't bother me and very happy with mine which replaced a top end Yamaha amp I'd had for ten years until it started misbehaving the week the Amazon deal was posted.

Well, my degree is in Physics and I'd normally be just as sceptical as you. Especially when it comes to hi-fi and AV: an expensive power cable or HDMI lead won't make a blind bit of difference on the whole. It's trivial, on the other hand, to show that bi-amping is electically very different to using a single amp. Of course your speakers need to be designed for it like my old Mission floorstanders, with two pairs of terminals per box, shipped with a solid link between them by default. When you bi-amp, one or the other of the drivers is driven directly - that is, the crossover is bypassed. As I said, this is electrically very different from the single piece of cable setup.

Whether it's necessary, or even makes any subjective difference at all, is down to the only thing that matters in hi-fi and that's your own ears.

bought this a few weeks back of amazon for £199 GREAT AMP AND SOUND well worth the money x box sounds brill like any thing you connect to this
#25
I don't really want to wait for play.com to get this in stock.
Can anyone tell me (apart from 5.1 which I don't care about) whether this one from Richer Sounds is a good deal:

Onkyo TXSR308

Ordered it this morning when it said 4-5 days and originally showed as awaiting stock, now shows as packing. Perhaps they have got stock?

Sounds promising.
