why would you do this to me? Ive been umming and aaarrring about one of these for a while, but been able to stop myself as combined with a decent speaker set from Richer Sounds it came to over £400.

But here you are, posting this at a much lower price, tempting me, teasing me, making things viable and more affordable.

Ive got to stop coming here....

Greta price RS have lowered theirs to £229.95 for VIP members so you can get them to price match this and get it for £209, was looking at this but ending up getting a deal on the Onkyo 606. At this price though you can't go wrong.
#6
LOL Jonster. Plead your case.

Outputs are amazing. Something I may purchase next year. But on a 19" TV it would be wasted.

That's EXACTLY what i'm thinking :-D

Got a Sony pre-HDMI 7.1 100w RMS per channel amp and have wanted another for a while, but can't afford one even at this price.

Damn you OP :-D

With jazz hands switching the cable very, very, very quickly. Ahem.

The real answer is that dual HDMI output is very rare, and you only tend to see it on AV receivers that cost over a grand.

The answer is a little box from the good people at JS Tech, £68 BOSH!

You won't get more HDMI outputs until you're paying at least 5 times the price of this. If you have a projector and a TV to connect to you should really go for a better amp.

:)

You could use component for one.
Not sure whether you'd be able to get it to output though both at the same time, i doubt it.

Very few amps have 2 hdmi outs, but maybe some sort of hdmi splitter/switch working in reverse might work.

sorry to be a n00b, but what does this actually do?

does it act as a central hub for all your entertainment needs? eg. you connect all your devices to this one Receiver & just select the device you want to use.
also, where do you get speakers for these to connect to those surround sockets? (top right of pic)

thx.

Oh god, so cheap. I've only just upgraded my system, and now this comes along!!

I notice there are a couple of questions regarding the firmware on play.com.

For anyone not aware the earlier version of this had firmware which would not allow a 5.1 optical input to override the sound sent over HDMI - so what does this mean ?

SKY HD does not send 5.1 audio over HDMI, only stereo audio. To get around this you send the audio into the amp via an optical (TOS Link) cable instead. That way you get picture from HDMI and audio from the seperate optical. The early versions couldn't do this. They just ignored the 5.1 sound via optical when a HDMI cable was plugged in.

Just confirm that it's the latest firmware if you intend to send picture via HDMI and sound via Optical from the same piece of equipment - notable SKY HD box.

Other than that fantastic amp for the money.
#16
To feed a TV and a projector at the same time you would need an additional external HDMI splitter. These aren't expensive.
#17
hmm I'm leaning towards the Yamaha DSP-AX763 but at this price on the Sony I'm going to have to look again. Grr! :) Good find.

I'm assuming this does voice over HDMI and doesn't do hi-def formats. CorrecT?

It deals with the sound but also has the added advantage that you can feed multiple HDMI's into it and then have one feed into your TV. I'm slowly running out of HDMI sockets on my TV so this is a good idea for me.

The only downside for me is that to get the best sound you would have to buy speakers so expensive as to force me into selling my organs on the black market.
#22
Can someone recommend some good (but not too expensive, don't want to spend more than the amp!) speakers to match this?

i'll offer £20 for your lung inc p&p :-D

Great amp, nice sound too but that all depends on your speakers and speaker layout.

As far as I am aware you can connect all your sound and video outputs from your bits and bobs (VCR/DVD/Satellite/PVR/Wii etc.) and it outputs the one you select on the remote to the TV. The issue for me with this model is that I wanted the output to be through a single HDMI cable and this model doesn't convert from component or composite to HDMI. The old model (910) did so I bought that instead. So, if I am correct if you but 2 component and 2 HDMI inputs you need a component output for the component inputs and a HDMI output for the HDMI inputs.

They look good - but are they not 5.1 ? The amp is 7.1 so was ok kind of expecting to see more speakers

(spot person who ain't bought a surround system for a long long time !)

Great price for this! i got the DG710 (a few models down from this) back in July for £120, and has been brilliant! If i knew i'd have been able to get one that can handle HD audio for this price a couple months later i would have held off!!
#33
Apart from a slightly lower wpc and no upscaling, what else doesn't this do that an Onkyo 606 does?

This Sony even has more HDMI inputs. And is over £100 cheaper.

Very tempted.... Thanks OP!

Bought this amp about 3 weeks ago from RS, almost bought the Onkyo606 but after much deliberation and many hours on the net reading reviews about this Sony amp I went for it.
Previous to this amp I had my trusty JVC 5.1 which done the job for about 4 years very well but I needed a more up to date amp for my PS3. I have Sky and my PS3 hooked up to this and the sound quality is just unbelievable, beautiful clarity and beefy bass. It comes with a little microphone you use to auto set the amp for the best settings! It makes Sky that bit better and watching blu ray brings it alive even more, if you are thinking about buying this amp, stop thinking and just buy it! You will not be disappointed!!!

Free shipping doesn't apply outside of the USA.
USA units are the wrong voltage for the UK and this unit isn't switchable.

So....

hmm can't decide whether to go for a marantz PM6002 or a surround amp??

I'm going to be using the amp primarily for stereo music but i thought if i go for a surround amp i can always add bits n bobs to it later- like a nice sub:-D

any thoughts?
#39
This is a great amp for the cash, If you want something that floors it for stereo AND surround sound - Try and audition the yamaha 763 (richer £300) wipes the floor with this 'entry level' amp.
