The Sony STRDH510 is the ideal introduction into the joys of separate home cinema.

Although it's just a basic AV receiver, the STRDH510 has everything the AV novice needs and is sonically miles better than most all-in-one AV systems. Featuring triple HDMI inputs and an HDMI output, the STR-DH510 is the ideal AV receiver to use as the heart of your AV system. Connect up, for example, a Blu-ray, PS3 and HD set-top box and you'll benefit from just a single connection lead between your receiver and TV. What's more, the STRDH510 will carry through 1080p, Deep Colour and x.v. Colour, ensuring full compatibility with the highest quality video signals. Other sources are taken care of by a wide selection of other sockets including optical, coaxial, component, phono and composite. A socket unique to Sony is the Digital Media Port. When used with a selection of optional components, this allows for the integration of a wide range of media products, including Apple's iPod.

Although technically advanced, setting up requires only a minimum of time. BRAVIA Sync links to other Sony BRAVIA products via the HDMI to give exceptional ease of use. Digital Cinema Auto Calibration (DCAC) optimises the settings to your room's requirements - at the touch of a button. Other great features with this Sony AV receiver include an RDS tuner radio, Portable Audio Enhancer for improved sound from your MP3 or iPod and a sleep timer.

In addition to offering great value for money, the Sony STRDH510 is also one of the best looking AV receivers at its price. Designed to match Sony's sleek Blu-ray players, the STRDH510 boasts a gloss black finish and a minimal button count for smooth, good looks.

As a first step to proper, separates AV, the Sony STR-DH510 has everything you need with none of the frills.

Do you get 10 pounds off for VIP on this ?
#5
Does it have subwoofer output ?
#6
Can you connect any existing speakers to this?

Is this capable of HD audio?

Is there anything I should know before I purchase this. I'm a complete av noob and this would be by first receiever. So I could hook up sky and ps3 straight away with no issues?

It does Dolby Digital 5.1. It doesn't do HD versions (Dolby TruHD or DTS HD)

It has 3 HDMI inputs for you SKY HD, PS3 or other HD device and 1 HDMI output to link to your TV

6 channels. Thats why its 5.1. The .1 means a sub woofer.

If it doesn't output HD audio (DTS HD ECT) then why have HDMI inputs? why not just optical? Sorry not really clued on Audio lol.

So you can switch video and audio inputs at the same time.

If you were watching Sky with the sound coming through your speakers, then switched to your PS3, the receiver would switch both audio and video simultaneously.

gotcha :) Like with my current amp with Optical when i turn my PS3 on and switch to it on my TV my Amp will still have the Sky audio coming through, so with this when i switch the PS3 on and turn the TV to PS3 the amp will switch to PS3 audio aswell. Thank you.

S**t I missed it! Is there any way to get one at this price? ****..
#23
1 optical in? hmmmmm. i suppose this is good for those who have 2 or 1 HDMI ports on their TV to use as a hub. i'm dubious tho as for some reason, my amp has 2 HDMI in (1 out) but interestingly can't have the video AND the audio in from the same HDMI port. my mate's is the same, mine's Cambridge Audio, his is Harmon Kardon. if this behaves the same way it would suck. check before buying

How does this compare to this then: http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/lg-hb405su-5-1-blu-ray-home-cinema-system-149-99-delivered-amazon-sold-hughes-di/888272#comments

Granted it doesn't have 4 HDMI posts, but it included speakers, blu ray player and 2 optical ports?

I'm trying to get be head around this whole Home cinema system, also will any speakers work with the Sony Av, heard there is a passive and active involved with them.

I was tempted with the onkyo deal a few weeks back that expired on mothers day. My mother in law wouldn't let me leave to take a look and so I missed out. Had an onkyo a while back, now with a technics, and a Sony would match all the rest of my kit.. but... something about an Onkyo that makes them better. Also this only has 3 hdmi, 1x optical port, and limited inputs... think I'll be waiting for another Onkyo deal to pop up....

Hot for a newbie setup though...

Yep clearly has 2 optical inputs, but strangely names them to specific inputs. I assume you can use optical for dvd and not just coax as the naming suggests

I am a complete noob at AV receivers:
The pioneer VSX520 is £180 on the VIP deals. Would the extra £80 be worth it? Is the only difference going to be future-proofing (e.g. 3D capable), or will the sound quality be a lot better?

As for speakers, will the £80 speaker package on RS be any good? I'm not an audiophile, but just want a decent upgrade from the in built TV speakers, and don't want the all-in-1-box dvd home theatre systems (i find they only have a lifespan 3-4 years before the quality/usability drops).

I guess my budget is £250 max.

Any advice is greatly appreciated :)
