This is a GREAT deal! (under £750 if you take off Quidco). Nearer £900 elsewhere. I found it by chance not through price comparisons (which show a higher price at Oyyy). The AR series is now being replaced by the AW series so it looks like this has bottomed out. Excellent spec includes

Intel Core 2 Duo (T9300) 2.5 GHz Processor with 800 MHz FSB)
4096MB DDR2 SDRAM 667MHz
500 GB Serial ATA 5400 rpm Hard Disk Drive
17 inch WXGA+ (1440 x 900) X-black LCD with double lamp technology
Blu-ray Disc Drive: BD-R/-RE/-ROM/ DVD+-RW/+-R DL/RAM Drive
Ethernet network (LAN) (10Base-T/100Base-TX/1000Base-T)
Wireless LAN 802.11a/b/g/Draft n
Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium
NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT GPU with Dedicated Video Memory of 256MB
Colour: black

I'm posting this so they run out and I don't go and buy one! I'm waiting for six months until the AW (which has full HD - 1080 screen) drops in price. Soooooo tempting though....I may not be able to hold out.

Don't get it...perhaps I'm an amateur at this but if you are voting cold then wouldn't it be sensible to say why? Cos if there's a better deal out there I'd like to see it.

Seems very expensive for a laptop....sony or not....i think you can get a lot of laptop for less than this...even if you are not being lead by the name...imo anyway:roll: besides, how many people a week into new year with this cash lying around?

There are laptops out there for £2500 so in comparison it 's not. If you are in the market for a decent laptop with a blu-ray writer I don't think this can be beaten. Agree with the cash lying around thing though...links from this site have drained me!

You can get laptops a lot less than yes... yes... but people need to realise that just because it is expensive doesnt mean its not good value for money. Guy put a laptop up for 840 quid and it was saving over 250, geat value for what u were getting but he got voted cold.....
#12
I think it's a great deal if you have the money. I would buy it if I had it but I only have up to around £450 and even then I can't find myself parting with it untill I think I have a good deal.

Had looked at them myself. Not bad me thinks....but full HD on 16 inch screen? This is what I'm getting when they drop to under £1000.

http://www.comet.co.uk/shopcomet/product/503096/SONY-VGN-AW11SB?cm_ven=Pricerunner&cm_cat=Feed&cm_pla=Laptops&cm_ite=503096_SONY_VGN-AW11SB

But if you don't mind the non full HD screen but the plus of writing blu-rays. £750 for the AR71S is damn fine.

Not really, yeah the warranty is always good to have but the processor in the sony is better, the graphics are pretty much the same, they have the same amount of ram (although the sonys is slower) and have the same amount of hard drive space. The thing that makes the sony worth it (although personally not for me as i dont need it) is the fact that it has a blu-ray writer while the dells is just a reader and blu-ray writers are still stupidly costly so this sony is actually a good price.

If only others would agree....looks like this is frozen....and there are still over 300 left....hey might have to repost if they have to drop the price further to shift em....ho hum.

also - blu ray blanks are dropping hugely in price making them more and more cost effective as a DVD alternative....£750 and future proofed....not bad....still......

Great laptop, but not the best deal. Sony centre in nottingham has them for £699 they, not surprisingly, are flying out the door but they seem to be getting more in all the time. They got 2 in today and were bought before they even got to the store.
#23
Looks like the price has now been increased on Oyyy. Thought it was very low. £699 from a Sony centre though...cripes that is fantastic if it's the same model. Well they still have 350 left at Oyyy so I expect they'll be droppin.....

hotyoda (and all other hukd members!) I need some advice! I have the AW11S/B it's the daddy, paid roughly 1000 for it I posted the deal on here ...search AW11S I think . I need another laptop now cos another family member Really loves the AW11SB ... so I could get the same one again, trouble is number one the cheapest I can find is like 1180 ish so not happy there...also I'll still have access to the AW so it'd be a bit boring no to have two of the same? I was thinking about getting an AR but the screen is not 16:9 so it's not ideal for having two applications running side by side...but it is a 17" screen , like you I don't really wanna pay over a 1000 for a machine in this day and age so what about the configurable FWs on sonystyle...what do you friendly friendly chaps and chappettes think?

EDIT:

Oh and oh my word don't even think about buying an Acer if you are looking at Sony Vaios...that much even I know!
