I think this is a cracking deal.

It was £1499.99, but now it is a much trimmer £899.99

The specs are decent too.

Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 dual core processor.
4GB RAM.
400GB hard drive.
Blu-ray and DVD-RW/+RW DVD drive.
18.4in widescreen.
Powerful NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT GPU graphics
Wi-Fi enabled - b/g and N.
Integrated 1.3MP webcam.
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium.

Wish I could get one...

It was £1499.99. :w00t:

This is the best deal I could find by well over £100. Unless you want to buy it 2nd hand from eBay for £829.99.
#3
nearly £1500 for a laptop (before discount) - but then again its sony , so whats new with their overpriced products
#4
Look at the specs steve2zaf, The dedicated graphics card is worth over £300 on its own! Then lots of memory, twin core cpus, 400gb HD, and not to forget the HUGE screen size. At £900 this is a bargain.
#5
Echo that. The spec at £1500 was laughable, at £900 its hardly a bargain either imo.. Only redeeming feature is reasonable graphics and bluray. What are you doing, Sony?
#7
crse2008
graphic card isnt tht great see it here

good acer laptop - here

hardly a good comparison, comparisonwise only a better laptop for same or less money is relevant
thats a worse laptop for less money - hardly surprising

The specs are nothing special, it's not a particularly fast Core 2 Duo (there are several better) and Core i5/i7 based machines are now available offering up to four hyperthreaded cores. 4GB is an average amount of memory and a 400GB hard drive is fairly average as even 500GB drives are relatively inexpensive now. The graphics card is also an older midrange model and certainly nothing that great or worth much either.

costs more and its from play

slating the laptop and slating the price 2 different things also - if this is the cheapest price for this model is pretty much hot

I think i've impressed even myself with this find! (also seems to be available here, and here too - presumably different websites selling the same stock)

It's a clearance item, so might be missing some or all of the accessories, but the spec. MORE than makes up for it.

P8400
17" screen (1920x1200 I think)
Nvidia quadro Fx 2700m !! (~15,000 in 3dmark 2005!!)

Reputable seller (PCWorld Business)
And the best bit.... it's less than £500?!?! ( £465.72 )

It's likely there is only one of these in-stock, so if this interests you - act fast!

True - but who cares, it's the text that matters.
Order it - if it isn't what it claims to be, take it back to your local PCWorld.

I agree the sony at £1500 is over priced and exaggerated, at the price it is now is still a bit expensive. For the price u pay id expect a 500gb hard drive. Altho the samsung Laptop is a little more it does have a slightly better spec so i think the samsung is a better choice.
For those who intend to use it as a desktop replacement and want a big screen perhaps the sony is better.
The Samsung has a faster processor but slightly inferior graphics processor, a bigger hard drive and windows 7. The Samsung has ati 4570 1GB GDDR3 whereas the nvidia 9600gt is 512MB, anybody like to confirm it is GDDR3 on the sony?

There seem to be a load of crazy-prize clearance/refurb/returned laptops @ the PCWorld Business website. (aka microwarehouse)

Here's another one; less than £400! for a Samsung P560; T6400, GeForce 9600M GS, 2GB ram, Vista business (XP pro downgrade).

...Reputable seller (PCWorld Business)...

All three web sites you referred to (MicroWarehouse, MacWarehouse, & PCWB) are all part of the Dixons Store Group (now known as DSG International).

What were you saying about "Reputable seller"? ;)

Lately any laptop or desktop deal on here gets slated, always makes makes me laugh when the nerds come out to play.

Pc Nerd "I can make one with the same specs for half money"

Normal Norman "Not everyone has either the ability or the time to build their own.

Pc Nerd " The graphics/processor/memory are not the very latest/quickest"

Normal Norman "Most of us are not planning to use it to rule the world, in fact we only want it to peruse porn on the web and print out the occasional ASBO.

Pc Nerd " I have the latest Nvidia"

Normal Norman "Why are you using a moisturising cream on your computer?"

Pc Nerd "Although I have state of the art processing power and buy life sized Star Wars figures in the sale from Play.com I still havent got a girlfriend"

Normal Norman "I wonder why?"

I think the deals HOT!

People are judging the product when i'ts the price that's up for debate. Fine it mite not be a everyone's cup of tea, but for a Sony laptop you shouldn't expect Acer prices!
I own a VAIO and you do pay more for your tech but it's SONY what else do you expect?
If this is the cheapest you can get a decent spec AW series for and by a good 100 quid too, why is this not scorching hot??

I think it's because for £900 you can get a MUCH better spec. machine with equivalent build quality.

I'm personally not interested in that price range, so have done little research and thus cannot off the top of my head offer an alternative superior deal. I am however quite sure they exist.

This philosophy might work for mundane products, but computers are built from interchangeable components.
Beyond the quality & styling of the laptop's case there is nothing differenciating the components inside an Acer, to the components inside a Sony. (if the system spec's are identical)

This is why people judge the product, not the price when evaluating laptop deals.

However, if it's Sony @ discount prices you are after how about this

CPU: i5-520M processor - vastly superior to the P8400
GPU: GT 330M - superior to the 9600M GT.

The rest you can work out for yourself; Suffice to say Sony brand, cheaper price, better spec.
Much better deal. Case closed.
#22
TehJumpingJawa your spec is indeed impressive but the screen size is 16 inches. That is still 2 inches smaller than mine...
#23

The graphics card chart (cheers to brilly) isn't relevant, as it includes cards from desktop PCs as well. So its not a clear and true laptop graphics card comparison in this case. But if you notice, it is classed as a high end card.

case closed eh? as said its a full 2 inches smaller screen size making it basically irrlevant.
never heard of company either, not that it means much but some random internet retailer doesn't give me a good feeling.
tbh im not convinced this is amazing deal but if you show an alternative it has to be equal or superior in everything. Also the quality and styling of the case is a factor as well as brand reliability and service

True, screen dimension is 2 inches smaller, but the screen resolution is the same; 1920x1080 Full-HD.

18.4in ->3.8kg
16.4in ->3.1kg

When talking about a laptop, I would expect most people to consider the reduced weight and bulk of the latter to be a positive trait :?

Each to his own I suppose.

Quite true TehJumpingJawa. This is a valid argument and everyone is invited to chew the fat.

Anyhoo, laptops that are this size (ie HUGE), are desktop replacements and IMHO are not for toting around in manbags. Unless you have arms and shoulders like Arnold Schwarzenegger, or fancy a workout whilst trying to catch a plane/train/car/boat/tube/hovercraft. You get the idea.

Personally, bigger IS always better. And adding an extra two inches will make ALL the difference. Just ask the Mrs... :):)

tbh to use as a true laptop id not go for anything as large as either of those.
As themosh70 says, looks like a desktop replacement really where screen size is nice to have.

still about £500 overpriced, but then its a sony
