First deal, but don't go easy on me ;)

Possible 5% Quidco

I just bought this myself. I've wanted an I5 with dedicated graphics for around £500 for a while. Blu Ray writer and full HD screen was just too tempting

For this price you have to configure it exactly as below (white or pink,) and drop from 4GB to 3GB of RAM (cheaper to add more yourself after purchase, if you need it.)

Optical Drive : Blu-ray Disc(TM) writer
Hard drive : 500 GB Serial ATA (5400 rpm)
Wireless LAN : Wireless LAN + Bluetooth®
Processor : Intel® CoreTM i5-480M, 2.66GHz
Display : 39.4 cm LCD, 1920x1080, webcam
Graphics : ATI MobilityRadeonHD5470 512MB
Finishes : White or pink
Memory : 3 GB 1066MHz DDR3-SDRAM
Battery : Battery life up to 3 hours
HDMI(TM) output : HDMI(TM) output
Microsoft® Office 2010 : Office 2010 Starter
Operating system : Windows® 7 Home Premium
Language and keyboard : English (QWERTY)

Offer for Blu Ray writer ends tomorrow :(

Oh, free engraving is also available.

great price - improved spec since I bought this

Pretty amazing spec, I'm sure the time limit on the blu-ray drive will bring much heat this way.

The screen is only 15.5" though given most people on here probably use an Orange San Francisco they should be used to cramming inordinate numbers of pixels into tiny spaces.

I got ridiculed for suggesting this graphics card would play anything you can throw at it yesterday. But I genuinely believe it will, at lower resolutions of course.
#4
I would go for F series with 3D but pricey!
#5
Yeah good deal, deserves to get hot compared to the previous similar deal of this, its better specced and cheaper. I did find this yesterday but it messed up when i tryed to post it twice, so i gave up, lets share the fame then yeah?? heated

you could say that for nearly any graphics card of the past 2/3 years? lower resolutions means it wont play EVERYTHING you throw at it, it's truley not a gaming gfx card. hd video and some 3d modelling work, and maybe medium/low res settings on games

ergonomics dont' look great - keyboard and trackpad are skewed to the left way too much for my liking. i prefer to the keyboard to be centrally positioned.

great spec though especially with the ATI 5650

Some guy at notebookreview here gives his experiences of the card, for example:
Burnout paradise plays at 1080p with medium settings at 30-50 fps! not bad!

So not a bad card at all really, not high end, but still.
#9
Good spec for that price! But the screen is not so bright.

Fairly common now to have the trackpad directly below the spacebar.

great laptop even greater if you could afford it :)

Upgrade from this graphics card to the 1GB HD5650 is an additional £60.00. I didn't go for that myself because I won't be using it for gaming... Much. Real gamers use desktops :)

The xbox360 has to be pushing 2/3 years old so might it be as worthy a gaming platform as that dedicated, if antiquated one?

Sandy Bridge E-Series out soon...prob. more expensive and won't have the BluRay drive...did you look at the CA?
#15
That is almost £100 less than I paid for 2 weeks ago. luckily they sent me the wrong colour so they've given me a choice of £50 refund and i keep the laptop, full refund, or if I pay £30 more they'll change it for the 16.4" F series.....what do you think i should do?
#16
this is an amazing deal - that screen resolution is brilliant and dedicated graphics too!

Full refund, order this in the proper colour (assuming you have £550 to spare while you wait for the refund).
#18
Looks like it has dropped in price about £40 since last month, maybe cause the new Gen 2 models are steppin out.

That’s the high end desktop platform due seemingly in Q4 this year and it will be expensive. The next laptop platform from Intel should be Q1 next year and it may even launch in the first week of January.

If you want a bit of gaming I would seriously consider downgrading to the i3 saving £40 and upgrading to the 5650 for £60, so £20 more expensive in total. i3-380M gets 2702 3Dmarks06 and i5-480M gets 2880, so I wouldn't worry about the i3 holding your gaming back that much. Go here and check out the difference between the two ati cards, the 5470 doesn't even play CoD MW at medium aswell as the 5650 plays it with ultra settings, same for Mafia 2 really, highly playable at high on 5650, but not even as playable at low settings with the 5470.

i'm starting to think i'll ask for the full refund, i ordered glossy white, but the sent me a silver one. is a F series for £650 not a good deal they're offering me? its a i5 with 4GB ram, 1GB graphics and 16.4" 1080p screen plus the free bluray

Specs of the F series they are offering you? Is the one you ordered the exact same model as the one in this thread too?

I'd go for the F series 100%. Maybe try to get it even cheaper too, or try asking for them to throw in a free mouse or something! ha

3GB ram
320GB HDD @7200
Glossy White case (turned up as silver)
512mb 5470
1080p screen
free bluray writer.

-5% discount
i paid £620 (includes delivery)

is the dedicated card switchable?

For the reward of being the first to answer that question you would have to buy one and open it up.

Unlikely.
#27
Very tempted but the battery life looks awful - "up to 3 hours"
Can anyone confirm what the battery life is like for normal use?

Good call, the 5650 is a decent card and as you say the i3 won’t hold it back so a much better combination for gaming.

VGA resolution maybe! :D
I did ridicule your idea that an entry level discrete mobile GPU is better than any integrated graphics as that is no longer the case and with AMD’s next APU due soon that will be even more so.

neilmc1983 - did you order the white on the previous deal, where the White reduced the price by £30? If so, the White comes with a silver lid and white keyboard. If not, no worries - good on you for getting compensation though! The F series upgrade would probably be worthwhile if you want a laptop that big! I find the 15.6" models a little too big for a laptop. If you are buying it as a desktop replacement, the F series would be worth the extra £30.

As for this deal - I'm typing from my E series bought fairly recently on the last deal. It's a very nice machine. The only things it is lacking from my previous 13.3 SR290 Vaio, is the smaller screen (doh), and a fingerprint reader. I thin the Blu-ray writer is a bit of a gimmick though - I wouldn't have paid extra for it at all. It shall probably sit in this unused for writing Blurays. I think optical (writing) disks are largely pointless these days in the home environment where external Hard-drives make so much more sense.

I don't think 3hrs is particularly bad relatively speaking. You could always buy an extra battery, or longer lasting replacement if you'll be needing it.

i have this version in i3, the touchpad is crap! this is my second replacent, becuase the touchpad gets warn out after a month and stops responding

otherwise its a good laptop HOT :)

There aren't any options to upgrade to a 6 or 8 cell, are these available as an after upgrade does anyone know?
#34
@Simes123, I suspect I'll be selling the Blu Ray writer and replacing it with an SSD at some point, assuming that's possible :)

Simes123... i went into the Sony Centre in stevenage and they showed me what glossy white looks like, it looked sweet!! so i phoned them and ordered a custom vaio, i asked for the glossy white plus 5% discount over the phone or i will hang up and order through quidco to get the 5% off and the sales advisor would loose his commission, he quickly agreed to knocked 5% off lol... but then it arrived friday (06.04.11) it was glossy silver with a matt white keyboard... i called sony and said show me one **** thing on this laptop that is glossy white... the help line guy said they are getting lots of complaints about people getting silver versions instead of glossy white. he said sony have run out of the 100% glossy white so they are using silver with a matt white keyboard as a replacement and all the customers are complaining. he said there will not be any more glossy white and other components for custom laptops are running out fast.

I was looking for a budget laptop (i was thinking of a 14" Acer Timeline for portability and battery life. but this has me tempted. As a non-gamer I don't see a lot of need for hi-spec graphics or processor better than an i3, so it appears to be a Sony laptop for £409 (with a blu-ray drive I'll probably never need!)

Am I right in assuming this'll be much better built than an Acer timeline?

Should I add in the ATI HD5470? Will it do me any good for watching movies occasionally?

Don't bother with the 5470, the Intel hd included as standard is good enough for 1080p video, the Intel 4500m hd before it could play hd video too so don't worry about it. The 5470 is a bit of a weird one because it can't do much more than the Intel hd.

Battery life on mine is about 2 hours on normal use
