This is a nice stylish laptop. Lacks a decent GPU but build quality seems great.

I'm going to get one as I've compared the same specs with Dell and it would cost around £550, so better of with a Sony Vaio..
Any Comments...?

The E Series has just had an update which may or may not be worth holding out for: -

This is part of the new range, they added 14" and 17" I think.

Quite a few reports on how noisy these new E series (fans at idle and HDD etc) are which is a shame as they look decent enough.

Personally I'd always check Dell outlet for refurbs as they have some cracking deals, and refurbs pretty much means that the box is open. The units are mint.
The vaio is a great deal but if you like Dell it's def worth checking out. Hope that's of some use?

I've got one of the 14" CW Series. A little bit more but a fantastic machine.

So what, in your humble opinion
is wrong with the GPU?

It's got one of those dirty integrated 'I'm not going to let play any games on me' GPU's.
Still, as long as you don't want to play games...it's perfect. :)

I just got a free Acer Aspire and I use it for Music production...it's perfect. The big, grunty quad core desktop is for the games.

I've got the 4gb ram/500gb hard drive version of this laptop and it's top notch, especially for this price. The design is great and impressive for a so called budget series.

Performance is excellent too with the Intel i3 breezing through a lot of things from encoding to multitasking. The battery lets it down a tad as you can get between 2 to 2 and a half hours but apart from that it's a very good laptop for the price.
#10
Very nice laptop, and at that price its the same as you would pay for the older T4300 version. Well recomended from me.

Care to comment on fan noise while idle?
#12
Ive used one at work. Played around with it , since there on all the time, you cant hear the fan at all? but then again they are only using one program.
#13
It's a similar price at Ebuyer too. Looks great, very Macbook (although Sony did the Chiclet keys first) but the touchpad may be an acquired taste though (plastic sandpapery type).

A quick plea for help - Has anyone done a DLC check on this or the Dell 1564 (or any other i3 laptops?) - I will be getting one for audio (Ableton/Reason/etc) and want an i3 but need to get one with no DLC issues.

Playing games on a laptop is a fool's errand. They just simple isn't a nice experience, without spending mega money.

Would help if you elaborated on this DLC check. Just got an i3 1564 for my daughter but no idea what you are talking about.

I think the OP means a DPC latency check:

Note, you may well find you need to disable wireless to pass the test.

Sound advice, received my i7 specced Dell yesterday, beats this hands down in all departments and only cost me £60 more than this

Dell outlet are well worth a look if you're more concerned with performance over brand recognition

Yes that's it - run it (no install required) and tell me if anything goes red or is mainly green/some yellow. Would be really grateful!

Is this really worth the extra £100 compared to the dell 1564 which is very similar spec?

I've heard a lot of problems regarding Dell's i7 specced laptops - i.e. heat and throttling issues.
#22
But Dells are cheap brand computers.

Sony Vaio is PC's equivalent to the Mac laptops although Sony still havent got it right with quality or design when compared to the mac.

A Sony Vaio is always going to be more than the Dell per same spec. The fact that the difference is now £100 instead of the previous typical £300+ difference is why this budget Sony is a relatively good price.

People think Macbook Pros are expensive but show me another laptop with the quality and design to compete. There is none but it doesnt matter to alot of people as most are concerned with £££ and are happy for plastic crap.

Hi has anyone got any code for sonystyle website I am desperately looking for a code, as I want to buy one of the configured CW series with i5 processor and blu-ray. It comes to £739 the best compromise between portability and performance and it isnt badly priced either, but any discount would sure help me :)
#26
This is a top price. Nice find OP :)

this thing looks great. the one downside is the 3-hour battery life.

would'nt buy another dell after 2 hard drive failures on my xps m1530 which i bought from their outlet store. cs is okay but not very efficient with queries. sold my xps on ebay just after the 1 year warranty lapsed and bought the sony sz series, fantastic laptop

Initially there were numerous issues regarding these processors, which they seem to have resolved with BIOS updates. Put mine through it's paces overnight with some pretty heavy batch editing, and woke up this morning to find everything went well.

Shame they messed up the release of these so badly, but makes for a great bargin for those with an eye for one, now I just have to decide which to keep and which to flick off to help offset the cost http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/625252/dell-studio-17-i7-820qm-17-3-high-d or my new refurb

I completely understand that there will always be those that would prefer the Rolls Royce with the Morris Minor engine, just trying to point out alternatives for those who would prefer the Morris Minor powered by Rolls & Royce

Depends what aspect you want an opinion on.

This is my daughter's laptop so haven't spent loads of time on it myself but first impressions are very good.

Hugh led screen, bright, no dead pixels, great resolution.
Nice brushed gunmetal finish around the keyboard.
Keyboard is good, minimal flexing and nice to use.

We paid extra for the pink lid and it does look like a very classy laptop, long, thin, magnetic clasp for the screen and very snappy running Windows 7.
Good webcam as well.

I think the price and quality for this i3 laptop is very good.

Well I've just run it for some 20 mins and it's all green. Stays well below the 500us threshold and states the machine should be able to handle real-time streaming of audio and/or video data without drop-outs.

Ah fantastic - rep to you, I've been waiting to put the cash down for it but it was really important it does this without issue (unlike some HPs and some Dell Studios). Didn't fancy my chances PC World letting me run it on store machines either so many, many thanks!

Looks a nice laptop but not that great a deal.
You can get an i3 laptop off the shelf on PC World for £499 that comes with 4GB RAM and 500Gb HDD so a better deal for an extra fiver (DELL Inspiron 1564)
You could probably get some cashback on it too

I played with one a bit, not for me (don't want to replace my MacBook) but its a very nice laptop, and at £399 is bargain basement stuff for the spec and quality you get. Actually feels better built than the more expensive Studio 15. Not a massive fan of the screen resoltuon though, 1366 x 768 is a bit low for a 15.6" display laptop IMO, especially given some 10" netbooks run at that resolution.

nice to see everybody helping on here. rep has been given.

looks good but the newer model round the corner sports higher rez
"1600x900 resolution and wide 16:9 aspect ratio, 14.0” VAIO Display with LED backlight."

I got this laptop last week and must say i am very impressed so far.

My main uses were for Internet browsing, streaming video & playing FM10.

The design is very nice and whilst running it is practically silent, the build quality seems very good as well.

I would recommend it.

Not to bash Vaios (I'm still torn as ti 1564 looks great and had excellent value but the Vaio is nicer) but many parts are still generic (or at least common between the two) and the Dell has an LED backed screen, the Sony doesn't appear to. It's still a nice screen though. Were the two the same price and the Sony's DLC check clear then I'd err toward the Sony. The are horrid to downgrade to XP though, from experience.

I've been using Windows 7 with Ableton for a couple of weeks now...and it's great!!
I've only been using a dual core PC, but with my ASIO drivers in the audio interface I use you can eradicate latency completely. I've successfully recorded full band, no problems...no jitters with 8-track recording, and 24 track playback is smooth as you like!!
I used to have latency/CPU overload issues with Vista, but not any more. And I've only got a cheap Acer Aspire 5732Z.

I think that was a little off-topic, though I do recall a reference to Ableton in there somewhere!! :)
