I have looked at the customisable notebooks - and this spec seems to 'tick' all the boxes.

It starts at £699, but have upgraded:

Core i5 £60
500Gb 7200rpm £80
4Gb RAM £30
BDRE £0
1920x1080 LCD £30
GT330M 1GB £30

Total (inc free deliv) = £929.01

Note that the BDRE upgrade is free from DVDRW until 8th March (Normally £100).

Also you can upgrade RAM to 6Gb for extra £99.9, so system = £1028.

Voted cold, expensive for what you get.
#3
Voted HOT - a lot better than the Dell alternative (Studio 17)
#4
What an absolute rip off. You're paying for the name there, not the specifications.

Although they are similar, namely a large screen notebook - there are crucial differences in terms of spec:

Acer - that is a C2D which is an older processor to Core processors.

Acer/Samsung - Blu ray reader only, this Sony has a Blu Ray Rewriter - which is rare.

Samsung - this is higher res screen 1600x900 vs 1920x1080.

Samsung/Acer - this has much faster HDD - 7200rpm vs 5400rpm

Samsung - this has a higher spec processor i5-520 2.4Ghz vs i5-430 2.26Ghz

Therefore vs the Samsung which is the closest, all of these upgrades are worth £140 difference easily.

Can you give me a link to cheaper alternative with same spec?

I saw the Mesh lappie too. I am tempted but I get the feeling that if anything goes wrong with a Mesh, you are on your own. I can afford problems if I'm only paying £399 for a Medion but £899 is too much to risk.

not worth £300 more than the inspiron 17 which has better graphics card, only slightly slower processor, slightly less resolution on display but double the hard drive space (same speed).

I'd say £300 more is worth it over an inspiron, at least it gives you peace of mind thats its unlike to need repair like the dell

Haha what ever helps you sleep at night. Just don't do any of this:

Scratch it.
Plug the DC inlet too hard.
Open and close it too much that the hinges pop out.

Too many people send Vaios in under these circumstances thinking Sony will happily cover something that looks like personal damage and that Sony will just take their word for it...

So your saying silly reasons Sony's are returned, yet your happy 1 in 4 dells are returned in need of repairs to make them usable :w00t:

Ah lol I don't have any figures of numbers of Sony's that are DOA, nor am I defending Dell.

Simply put neither company are angels :whistling:

Sooner or later Dell will have a sale. I'll wait until then to pounce.

It's a vaio..Do I have to say any more??..

no other notebook maker comes even closer in terms of styling, and build status..apple for all the mac fanboys (and girls) yes. only one close enough is dell and even then they still don't have the same vision that vaio's do..Yep bit more expensive than normal lappys but well worth it. As long as you got ur warranty on it ur covered. I'm on my 3rd vaio machine now and looking to upgrade to a 4th..no other notebook manufacturer even comes close..had some problems with my 2nd machine but sent it back to sony and they fixed it free of charge. Got a courier to pick it up and drop it off repaired within 5 days and I didn't have to pay nothin. Just a simple phone call.

If you are looking for value for money then go get an advent or acer lol..but if you want a good looking machine that is actually nice too look at as opposed to a grey blob then invest in a vaio.

Yes you are paying for the brand somewhat but its well worth it. And from what I can see this deal is quite good compared to the hardware you get, even if it is a bit expensive..

Intel® CoreTM i5 Processor < New line of intel CPUS
500 GB Serial ATA (7200 rpm) < Faster speed HDD than standard 5400RPMs
4 GB 1066MHz DDR3-SDRAM < DDR3 ram don't need to say no more.
Blu-ray Disc(TM) writer < Most other companies can only include a BD reader (even thats a big ask), these guys just threw this writer in for the hell of it
41.6 cm LCD, 1920x1080+ webcam < sony's displays are known to be the best quality screens for over a number of years
NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 330M 1GB < even a dedicated graphics card included 1GB as well..

right that's enough lol back to work we go.
