most other premade sony models are a lot more expensive if your wanting a higher spec processor, better graphics card or 64bit vista.

So its :
P8600 2.4ghz
4gb ram
320gb HDD
1600x900 screen
DVD-RW
ATI 3470
Vista 32bit
Thats for £753,

You can get it with:
3650 graphics card and 64bit vista for only £818.

so if you want something similar to the usual high end FW models without bluray, this is a very cheap alternate.
Also the other models dont have 64bit so cant use all 4gb ram anyway. and this one can be customized to what you what.

Yes I noticed the FWs we can config in the UK at fairly decent prices by Vaio standards...would you say this 'x' is worth the couple hundred quid more... I want it for web development purposes and I want 16:9 screen ratio to have two apps side by side budget is around 1k... would it be worth getting the 64bit windows and 512MB graphics card ... or is that only going to affect me if I were playing games on it (I won't be playing games on it)? I'd really like some help thanks guys. voted hot btw!

64bit will allow you to use all 4gb or ram otherwise on 32bit vista you can only use 3gb.
64 bit is now widely used so you should have no problems running 99% of programs.
and the 3650 graphics card should help as well.

if your budeget is £1000 and you want web design, have a look at the dell studio xps 16" as well as its got a RGB LED screen.

will check out the dell too thanks for the helpful info

Woooot that is v v good, i can't get near that figure on the site...so its a call up and hope for the best i guess?

Let me get this straight, they are selling you the machine (x or v...or does that even matter?) and it costs less if you take it with case or mouse?! is there some major delivery charge catch or something?

EDIT: Ahhhhhhh ignore me it's the blu-ray writer Vs the DVD writer that is jacking up the X majorly that is the major diff between the x and Vs.

yeh, i dont want blu ray as iv got a ps3 and theres "really" no point in it.
Just use torrents if you know what they are.

Basically, if you phone them up, they can do you a much better offer.

It will lowers the delivery time (eg: there site says 3 to 4 weeks for some stuff but they say 1.5 to 2.5 weeks)

You get express delivery for free

You can get an accessory of about up to £60 for free
I got the https://shop.sonystyle-europe.com/SonyStyle/b2c/showaccdetailpage/(layout=23_146_138_119&uiarea=1)/.do?itemid=3EB82AB0EFF3C59CE10000002BC29B8F4890559B4FFB006BE10080002BC29B74&areaid=3EB82AB0EFF3C59CE10000002BC29B8F bluetooth laser rechargeable mouse for free which is very good.

The sales guy said that you can get up to about £40 off my £888 price. although i only get £8 as i picked an expensive accessory.
Also the more expensive your laptop is the bigger accessory you can get for free and the more money you get off.

its worth giving them a ring.
i would have bought but i have to cancel my dell order tomorrow first.

tbh, unless you must have a bluray, the to get the other model as its a lot cheaper, you can add a T9550 2.66ghz processor which only came out a week or 2 ago and is very high end for less.

i mean the P9550 is made for expensive high end laptops so that processor is fast and has 6mb chach instead of 3 on the P8600

Sweet thanks for all that info... im gonna give them a ring with all this in mind.

thing about the blu-ray is it goes so well with the full-hd screen...

granted dvds can fit a lot of info but blu-rays are becomming more common...it just seems a shame to splash out on a pricey laptop that cant write this newish format for the sake of £100 and the blank discs have to come down in price eventually just like blank dvds when they came out...Then those with blu-ray writers will be laughing as it is like having a portable hd on a single disc...also implications for HD movies... I know portable HDDs are quite reasonable but it's not practical to keep buying them and plugging them into the 3 usb ports...also I think for the portable HDDs to work on PS3 they have to be FAT32 no? (i.e. no file over 4gb). Perosnally I'd rather sacrifice some processing power for the extra blu-ray feature...I dunno you are more knowledgable then me but I can only go on past experience I've always gone for the 'best' optical drive Vaios in the past and the theory has led to much better longevity of the machines for me.

the thing is no pc games are made on blurays yet, and neither are applications. they are the main things that use space.
They wont be out for some time, and by the time they are, il have a new laptop.
theres no way blurays will be used in the next 5 years at least as the norm, and i dont plan on keeping my laptop that long.
i mean blurays are so far off atm, that if you go to a shop like pc world they dont even stock blank blurays.

also dont forget, they are making 400gb blu ray disks and then 1tb (google it) and your laptop your getting wont support them. thinking about them they wont be used for AGES.

The only thing they are good for atm is blurays, and if you have a blu ray player like my ps3, you dont need one.

also i transfered a 10gb transformers FULLHD film to my ps3 and it worked.

Got one of these a month ago in the sales from Sony, and I have to say I'm impressed with it. The 16:9 screen really is nice for working on or watching movies, and the keyboard makes typing rather pleasant, as the keys are spaced out (Very similar to the Mac book keyboards). Highly recommended by me =)

is the site working for anyone?
i was going to buy one today and they are doing maintinence :(

I'm perhaps misreading the spec but 1600x900 is not full HD (1920x1080)

Using torrents is piracy while using Blu-rays isn't - a big difference.

The graphics card is not good enough to play any of the latest games. you will struggle to play call of duty 4 or 5 on medium settings on 1280 x 800. of course thats if your a bit of a gamer...:whistling:

We got the P8400 model a month ago when it was on clearance for £780, so that's a good price! It is a fantastic machine and we absolutely love it. Honestly we never use the BluRay drive, there's not much point in Full HD on a 16" screen.
All the rest is absolutely brilliant, and it looks stunning. The display is beautiful, even better quality than the TV. The sticker on the laptop does say "Full HD 1080" so I assume that the output to a TV is Full HD indeed, while the screen itself is not. But who would see the difference on a 16" screen?
First we also thought it would be more cumbersome than a standard 15.4" laptop, but to be honest, this one is about the same weight and it doesn't feel bigger at all, only slightly larger

Anyway we looked around for 16" laptops for a while (Samsung, HP etc.), not only we couldn't find anything else for this price, but this one is a Sony. What's more, it looks really good, great piece of design!
The graphics card is well enough to handle most games, you might not have all setting to the max everywhere but all the ones I've tried so far work, some like Spore even play with all settings to the max very smoothly.
Plus it's a Sony Vaio!

For once, buying a Sony is a bargain. So go ahead, believe me, you won't regret it! Voted hot, and we're so happy with ours that here's some rep' too!

the ATI 3650 is slightly better then a 8600m GT
the 8600m GT can just about play cod4 on high settings at 1200x800 as i tried it on my old laptop.

and the 4gb, 2,4ghz will also help.

its fine for moderate gaming, for heavy gaming, you cant expect to get a mid sized, fast gaming for this price.
gaming laptops are much bigger usually, and cost much more.

atm, iv got a p8600, 4gb, 250gb HDD, ATI 3670 512mb and it should play games fine. the vaio FW with the 3650 will come very close as there is not a big difference between the 3650 and 3670.

also iv googled the 1080p screen on the FW and its worth the £60.
its a dual lamp LCD which has more colour, is brighter and has a higher contrast ratio then the 1600x900 screen.

This is the output it's capable of, not the screen.

Even then, Sony may still class it as 1080p capable.
#19
yeh, thats stupid.
if its 1600x900 its not FULLHD so why label it as full hd?
#20
owais - I understand you now

Blanco - pretty much every laptop going and made for the past few years can output 1080p (1920x1200 for digital, 2048x1536 for analogue) therefore the output resolution is not of much relevence. I see now however owais was referring to a different screen which does make sense.
