Very similar to the deal I posted - this has the better graphics card instead of the Blu Ray drive.

Price shouldn't include Quidco.

The 5% Quidco is for the price excluding VAT so won't be £28.00

Choosing 3GB memory has a rather long delivery time though.

Made an order and got an email from Sony saying that they canceled my order (see the email below). Called them but they didn't help. They will not tell the reason for the cancelation as well. Offered me to pay by the bank transfer instead. I told them that I will not get cashback in this case but they didn't care. Asked to talked to the manager. The manager didn't care as well. I hate Sony!

Here is the email I got from Sony:

We refer to your order number XXXXXXXX.

We regret to inform you that the information you supplied with
your order has not passed our security checks and, as a result,
your order has been cancelled.

If you would like to reinstate your order, please contact our
Customer Service team on 08456 000124 and they will be able to
discuss alternative methods of payment with you. Please quote
your order number when doing so.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

Kind Regards,

@grom, most likely your bank blocked it rather than Sony, most banks do fraud protection and will automatically block high value purchases. Call them to unblock.

Depends what your looking for really, both have their merits but it would probably cost you more to configure the Sony to match the Dell than the other way around.

Plus points of the Dell

More Ram
Better & Newer processor
Cheaper

Plus points of Sony

Better screen
Bluetooth

Graphics cards are on par overall, I think both have USB3, Sony brand is probably more sought after

I talked to the bank and they said the debit card transaction passed ok but Sony canceled it and refunded the money. Also Sony confirmed in the e-mail and when I talked to them on the phone that they canceled it because it didn't pass their own security checks. They don't state the clear reason though. I hate Sony!!!

£60 less if you choose ATI MobilityRadeonHD5470 512MB. Not into gaming, but would want to use this for video editing/photoshop, what is this card like?

Seems like Sony are being overly stringent with their online security. I wonder why?? :|

Be aware in addition to canceling my order without even stating a clear reason and waisting a lot of my time on the phone got the following info from Sony regarding this purchase:
1. 5% cachback is for the price excling VAT so it is less than you initially may think
2. Your order might be credit checked
3. You cannot cancel your order: "Once your payment has cleared your Configurable VAIO order will go into production and can no longer be cancelled from that point." .. so you cannot cancel but they can!!! they did it to me!
4. The deliver time is 7 weeks

I'm in a similar situation to you, I originally ordered the Vaio with the 5470, but as the days went on it just began to bug me. The 5470 is a very basic card, I decided for £60.00 extra it made sense to configure a laptop with a better graphics card as this is a component that I wouldn't be able to upgrade at a later date.

I'm going to wait for my refund to clear before ordering again, but I'm certain I won't suffer from "buyer's remorse" once I've ordered the Vaio with a better graphics card.

3. You cannot cancel your order

I had no problem cancelling mine - the point at which you can't cancel is when you have received an email confirming production has started and you're provided with a delivery estimate.

Btw can someone tell me how to use quidco with this as i've never used it before. Do i just click through to sony from the quidco site and search for and configure my laptop as normal?
1 Like #18
They found a loophole in the law of Distance Selling Regulations and say "if the product concerned is a personalised product, such as a product that is configured to order or that contains an engraving or other means of individual personalisation made in accordance with your specifications". So if you ask to add or remove 1GB of memory (it takes 30 seconds to do) they say that it was personalized so will not accept returns.

Yes, exactly that. I love Quidco, but the only trouble I have is remembering to use it. :)

Very few photo/video applications use GPU acceleration and those that do are usually only optimised to use certain nVidia GPUs.
If you are hardcore about multimedia applications then either get an Intel quad core and/or a nVidia GPU. Note that I think you currently need high end applications to take advantage of GPU acceleration such as Adobe CS5.

I really fancy something like this in a 13". Does anyone have any suggestions?

I love how its got a button called "assist" built on for trouble shooting...they must really not have faith in their own machine (Mac ftw)

i bought this a month ago for £740 but with 6gb ram. I would regret it if i didnt love it so much. :)

"MAC FTW" It's because you pay 100% more for the same spec "WIN"
Not gonna bother arguing about the rest.

Back to topic yes Sony is probably the worst in customer service in my experience.

Acer Aspire 3820TG is the only choice and you have to import it from Germany to get the 5650. I had one, which I sold not long ago. Awesome machine.

Sony Vaio S series can be configured to a high spec, with 2nd generation I5/I7 processors and decent graphics card, but the price is £800.00 or more depending on spec required.

I took the advice of posts on the last deal, you can quite easily purchase another 2 or 3gb ram and fit yourself for roughly the same
