Been looking for a sleek light machine with a backlit keyboard and reasonable power, this ticks all boxes and comes with 6GB of ram - can upgrade to 8gb for £47 from crucial

Backlit keyboard is activated by sensors to prevent battery depletion

Comes with a fingerprint reader and WWAN, pop a mobile internet sim straight in and surf the web

Made from some sort of magnesium alloy material - great for heat dissapation (sorry for incorrect spelling)

Vaio - great build quality

I initially thought about getting the macbook pro but its operating system is too limited, i know you can do amazing things on it and the multi track touch blah blah blah (im probably gonna get assasinated lol) but i like windows....windows 7 is much improved and builds on xp's success

great weight not the best battery life but 5hours is reasonable, screen is ok, a hd trailer on youtube of "how to train my dragon" had contrast issues in the blacks but has a 1080p resolution when connected to an external monitor and i've got a 23" samsung so no problems

sound is ok abit quiet but the machine is only a 13"

ordered it today, if anyone has something light, good battery life and good power, and 13/14" they'd like to share then you're welcome ! simples !

Personally it isn't for me. Rather take the £600 Dell XPS that was posted a few weeks ago for home and then buy a cheaper portable for when I need to be mobile. Not going to vote either way but I don't see a point in paying £1000 for an ultraportable as being mobile I don't need power, word, excel or internet don't need anywhere near that power.

Cold. Its a Vaio. Nothing but cheap tat these days compared to what they were 5 year ago.

If your going to spend this kind of money on a 13" er and dont need windows specific programs, your best off waiting for the new MacBook refresh.

for me i want everything in one and i dont think the bulkyness of those xps machines is anything that should be carried forward, in about 6 months it'll just be a paper weight and new models come to the table, atleast with a slim machine , its diimensions and weight hold value, plus i totally disagree with the idea that vaio's have lost it, build quality is good and heat is low.

plus the macbook pro's are astronomical in value and they end up with "oh you can run windows on it too" like they admit the mac os has deficiencies.....

plus this iss (to quote another hukd commenter) a site to compare prices and deals on items, not to judge those items, so if someone was looking for something like this or indeed this exact model, this is the cheapest, people vote cold because they see 900 as a high price rather than paying 500 for a piece of junk with a celeron processor or dual core processor in it.... we're in the 21st century keep up with tech !

Ultra portable machines may be worth a slight bit more after a few years but like all technology they depreciate pretty much the same amount over the same time when you compare any of it really so that isn't really a viable comparison. The only exception to this tends to be toughened machines such as the toughbooks etc as there is a business market for cheap options on those types of devices however spending £1000 on any laptop, desktop, ultraportable or otherwise is still going to cause you in 3 years at upgrade time to be left with a system worth at best about £300.

Also about comparing, as I said I have not voted, it appears to be the hottest price for this anywhere but there are better and more sensible alternatives I feel for less, plus the whole point of ultraportables is to be out and about on battery as long as possible and sony claim 4 hours and I have seen cheaper alternatives with lower power budget dedicated graphics available with 8 hours of battery life.

i wanted a backlit keyboard, good power, light and 13/14 inches, i thought this was the best, i dont think tthere is anything else bar the macbook pro, i looked at the r630 range from toshiba, which is awesome and i called them to tell them they should have had a backlit keyboard annd they said it wasnt a high end product, i told them they lost a sale...

anyway what are your sensible alternatives? baring in mind what kind of spec i want i5 minimum 4gb minimum, and backlit keyboard light and screen size as stated above

MSI do a way better laptop with an I7 core, mobility 5870, 6gb ram and 1tb hard disk for £200 less.

Not a good deal (but not cold :)
