This was posted the other day at 800 quid wasn't it? AFAIK it's the same as Tesco sell for 2 grand!!!

God that makes me sick...picked mine up for 800 quid from Laptopsdirect, it only arrived yesterday. Unfortunately as I've been using it I don't think I could return it under DST.

I think you can buy a new one from Insight and return that to Laptops Direct, no???

Naughty but nice. :w00t: Retailers usually track serial numbers though so it probably will not pan out.

Hot deal though.

I could but it's going to be difficult, the UX has a lot of packaging plus it would be hard to conceal the usage - it has a little thumbstick which just seems to pick up dirt. I'd also lose out on courier fees as well which are around 50 pounds, I've e-mailed laptopsdirect to see if they could give me some money back as it mentions on their site.

One 4 left by 23:21 10/10/07 :-).

Could anyone explain how to get the 3G card please?
#10

#11

Nope, it is not folded away when "closed".
#13
Ouch!

None at all, although you do get a decent case supplied with the ux.

As a piece of technology it's amazing they have packed so much into such a tiny space. It also comes with a case, dock and port expander rather than being left as expensive accessories. The screen resolution is fantastic, I find it completely usable which is unusual for such a small screen.

The keyboard is awful, they have really made a complete mess of it - they keys are completely flat making it difficult to tell which key you are hitting, they have almost no travel making it hard to tell if you have hit the key or not and it's just too wide, I fins I have to realy stretch to reach the middle.

The software install is typical Sony which means it's atrocious - there is so much rubbish the machine could barely do anything in Windows. I've cleared it all uup and it's working far better now however it still needs a huge amount of sony utilities to work properly, the number of Sony add/remove program entries is a joke.

I don't like the ssd either, while in theory it sounds great but it's not fast and you're left with just 14GB. I'm going to get rid of the recovery partition and pop an 8GB CF card in there which should help.

Overall though I love it, I'm a complete gadget freak and this is really quite a gadget. It's so strange to be able to have a proper spec pc which runs everything I want that fits in my pocket. It won't replace my TX ultralight but it's a great companion.

Down to 1 left when I ordered mine,@ 00.05, this is an unbelievable deal, many thanks to OP!! (Just hope it was not a mis-price!!) As far as the "Free" data card/usb modem goes, I don't think it is actually free as you have to subscribe to a minimum of £45 per month on the Vodafone Data plan...Not sure how it would work in this device, as it does not have a PCMCIA slot, maybe the USB modem just dangles about!!! I saw the Samsung Q1 at my local PC World today and thought that was a good deal at £359, but this is streets ahead in every way!!
#17
Thanks for the review, John. :) I've ordered one as I've been looking at something ultra portable (lightweight being essential) for use while travelling. This will do nicely for my needs, especially at this price. I was drooling over the TX and G series VAIOs but those are just out of my reach.
#18
As for the Vodafone "offer", try looking at T-Mobile. They have a USB thingy free if you subscribe to their monthly price plan. Very reasonable at £20 per month (24 month contract) for unlimited usage (except VOIP traffic not allowed, £34 per month for VOIP-able traffic).
#19
For those interested, there is a full review of the UX1XN in the latest edition of PDA Essentials & GPS Advisor, it only scored 7 out of 10 , but mainly because of the price tag of £1099!!
#20
Sold out already!!! :santa:

cant wait to get mine! Adios, Nokia N770 :-D
#22
Hey John! How will you get an 8Gb Compact Flash card into the unit? Also, have you kept Vista on and deleted the unwanted programs or have you put XP on?

Was this just a local deal for the Samsung Q1 at PC World or is there a wider clearance underway? This seems a very good deal.

The unit has a CF card slot on the side (as well as a MS Duo slot on the top), you can pick up an 8GB CF card for 43 quid plus delivery. While it's only an 8MB/s card I think it could still be useful.

So far Vista is still on and just uninstalled as much of the **** as possible - I just can't believe the state Sony ship it in, mine was barely usable. With Norton installed it was only managing 90k/s peak for wireless transfers within the home network! I'm trying to work out which parts of the Sony software I can disable, there's an SQL server running(!) which some of it uses.

Now it's up and running with a Vista setup I'm happy with I'm going to try imaging it then experiment with it. It actually runs Vista quite well but I'd like to get the install space down, will give XP a go knowing I can get it back to Vista again. In my experience though Vaios are near impossible to clean install, the device relies on so many different utilities to work which all must be installed in exactly the right order and *maybe* it will work...

Out of the box it shows 24GB total (rest is used for the recovery partition) and 14GB free. Apparently you can burn off the recovery partition with a USB DVD burner, will give that a go tomorrow.

Thanks for the info John, The UX1N specs only mentioned a Memory Stick Duo as a card reader. I have the US version UX380N and it does not have a CF slot but it has a regular 40gb HDD and a sim slot for mobile GSM calling, and a flip up aerial. It will be interesting to see the difference in battery life between the UX1 and the UX380 as the specs are almost the same except for the SSD vs HDD. As you state, it comes pre-loaded with lots of useless software, like "Trial Editions" of Office and Norton which only left me with 14Gb free.(am uninstalling as we speak). Have you found that the 8GB CF makes any difference to the running speed, i.e. can you use it for Readyboost?
#29
I've not ordered the card yet, I'm considering my options first - I haven't used ready boost at all so I'm not familiar with how useful it is. Good idea though, I have no need for the MS Duo slot so it might be worth trying to use that for readyboost to try and help the limited 1GB ram.

This version doesn't have the simcard reader so I'm guessing it using that space for the cf card reader.

I placed an order for one of these at 21:08 last night when there were quite a few left in stock but when I check my order status online it says 'Awaiting stock to fulfil your order'. Sounds like I missed it for some reason! Did anyone place an order around that time and is now getting a different status for their transaction?

Thanks to the OP regardless of whether I get one; nice find.

I placed my order @ 12.10 am and there was 1 left in stock, took ages to process, the site was really slow, but currently shows as "order being processed"

i have a question for all, what is the best forum for replacing, tweaking, etc for this unit ?
#34
Good question - I've not had much luck so far, the notebook forums I normally use seem devoid of any UX talk.

did the laptop comes with the Vodafone data card?

Just for interest this was £5,000 up until a few weeks ago from Currys! It's now £2,000 so this was 90% cheaper than Currys were doing it!
