This looks like it is dual core not core duo.

Makro have the same model for just over £350 this week.

For a start its the wrong picture. It is the Nr Series not the N Series (I have both models), it looks exactly the same as the £299 laptop deal at EmpireStores. Good price neways, voted hot.

Not another silly Vaio !!!

the HP laptop, at £ 325 is a better deal, the HP is core-2-duo, and not the older slower dual-core.

with regards to Vaios, can someone explain to me why they are better than another laptop from another manufacturer with an identical spec ?

I do like Sony products, when they are making a unique product, like their tiny 20gb HD walkmans, or unique Trinitron Tvs, etc , but things like computers, well all they do is assemble the parts and put a sony sticker on it, I dont see any added value of the Sony brand on such items.

Anyone not buying the HP and holding out for another Vaio needs to rethink their priorities !

Sorry, I continue to be puzzled by this "this is dual core not Core 2 Duo" non-sense.

Core 2 Duo IS a dual core. Dual core is a descriptive term applied to CPU's which have two cores, essentially "two brains". Core 2 Duo is a brand name for one of Intel's dual core processor lines. And Pentium Dual Core is also a brand name for one of Intel's dual core processor lines.

A Pentium Dual Core is exactly the same as a Core 2 Duo with the same speed, except, it has half the cache. This really does not matter when you are browsing the web or doing office work - and you benefit by saving some money. They are not "older". The best way to think about the Pentium Dual Core is Core 2 Duo's price-concious twin brother. They are for all intents and purposes the same.

In terms of "why Sony", because they look good and have a very strong chassis. Not the cheap, bendy plastic rubbish you normally get on your sub £400 Dell's, Compaq's, Acer's etc...

http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/225498/hp-530-core-2-duo-t5200-1gb-120gb-d/<- the processor, Core 2 Duo T5200 (see http://processorfinder.intel.com/details.aspx?sSpec=SL9VP), runs at 1.6Ghz. This laptop has a T2370 (http://processorfinder.intel.com/details.aspx?sSpec=SLA4J) which runs at 1.73Ghz. To confirm, the Sony is FASTER but has HALF the cache. Refer to Intel's pages to confirm the only difference is the Pentium Dual Core is faster, but, the Core 2 Duo has 2MB vs 1MB of cache.

Looking at the rest of the specs.
HP vs Sony's
1.6Ghz T5200 vs 1.73Ghz T2370
1GB RAM vs 2GB
120GB vs 200GB
GMA 950 vs X3100 (both are integrated, but, the X3100 is more powerful)
4 cell battery vs 6 cell (so Sonys laptop will last longer on battery)
Vista Basic vs Pentium (so no Aero, media centre etc.... )

The HP laptop has less RAM (only 1GB and Vista = nightmare scenario), smaller hard drive, slower graphics, a CPU that runs slower, no Vista Premium, less battery life. The only positive is its slightly cheaper, but you lose out on so much its just not worth the saving!

EDIT: To see the difference cache actually makes, you can take a look at http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/cache-size-matter,1709-7.html. These are desktop processors, but, you'll note the difference between 2MB and 1MB is very small. The extra RAM on the Sony's will allow it to run circles round the 1GB HP. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/cache-size-matter,1709-6.html<- I'm so glad I got that Core 2 Duo for the extra cache, it saves me 0 seconds when encoding a MP3! The only place it would make any difference is gaming, http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/cache-size-matter,1709-5.html, but you won't be playing serious games on either the Sony or HP as they only have integrated graphics.

Just to add, all this confusion probably comes due to the older "Pentium D". The Pentium D was essentially two Pentium 4's put together - it was slow, rubbish and hot. The "Pentium Dual Core" seen now has absolutely NO relation to this.

Not to mention that Pentium Dual Cores are limited to an 800 MHz FSB and also, contrary to very, very popular belief, the Pentium Dual Core is actually a NEWER processor than the Core 2 Duo. It's amazing how nomenclature can affect people's perception of the composition of a product.

Snob, I'm more than pleased with my Dell laptop , bought for just over 500 quid with 2.2 Ghz, 3gig, 320gb,256meg 8600gt.

anyone thinking a dual-core IS the same as Core-2 has clearly not owned both processors.....

a Core-2 is MUCH faster , you cant simply look at the figures and say they are 95% the same and so should be pretty equal

the core-2 is a unique design, and is not the same design as used in dual-cores....

online info

the Core 2 Duo represents a new era for Intel. It's the first desktop chip family that doesn't use the NetBurst architecture, which has been the template for every design since the Pentium 4. Instead, the Core 2 Duo uses what's called the Core architecture (not to be confused with Intel's Core Duo and Core Solo laptop chips, released this past January). The advances in the Core architecture explain why even though the Core 2 Duo chips have lower clock speeds, they're faster than the older dual-core Pentium D 900 series chips.
