Surely just because it says Sony and Vaio on the case doesn't make it hot. There's plenty of cheaper or similar priced 10 inch netbooks with the same spec from decent manufacturers. What your normally paying for is the name.

Whats your point?

An Audi A3 costs more than a VW Golf, and they are exactly the same underneath. Paying for the name is part of life.

Right, I've decided to order one for collection tommorow after spending hours researching and reading reviews.

I got it for £290 with a £10 slip case included, using the 5300AW voucher for 5% of a £300+ spend.

Shame the people of HUKD don't see what a good deal it is. I've added heat and rep, and shall report back once I've got my new vaio :)

Thanks OP ;)

Sony's own website quotes a run time of only 160 minutes (less then 3 hours)

http://www.sony.co.uk/product/vn-w-series/vpcw11s1e-w/tab/technicalspecs/type/3d

It seems a lot of money for not that much for a netbook - I think for similar money you can get the Samsung ones which last twice as long on battery?
#8
At Very/Additions, these would be approx £275 delivered and pay September 2010, after 2 XX codes and Quidco.

It's like paying £600 for a Sony TV when you can get a Matsui for £250. All you're paying for is the name............:?:?:?

Was gonna buy one of these after I saw one in a Sony shop.

The battery is poo. Read a few reviews.

No, not quite, Matsui and brands like it are awful. Very cheaply made and often poor components.
#12
seems a decent buy, retail is usually £399

would be very limited stock though, its now end of line
#13
Curry's are looking to clear all netbooks loaded with Windows XP ASAP. Therefore over the next few weeks there will be dramatic price cuts (but more limited availability).

It may be cheap but just because it has Sony on it doesn't mean it's any good...

The sceen is much better than other netbooks, resolution is 1366 x 768 which is a big improvement over 1024x600....
#16
I would save money personally and get a Lenovo S10-2, or Samsung NC10.
Better battery life, N280 processor.

Sony make good TVs though :p
#17
Who the hell would even pay for the name anyway? Sony hasn't been a top end brand for years, but they are still leeching off the excellent build quality reputation that they had in the 80's and 90's. There's nothing special about Sony's build quality at all these days.

Agreed! They'r not really bad but no longer deserve the top quality reputation they earned years ago. It's a bit like the reputation VW group have for top quality cars when in fact they're decent but only middle ranking for reliability (sorry but someone else brought cars into it first!).

Shame Panasonic don't do netbooks (or do they?).

Are the TVs really that good any more? Yes, they are amongst the premium brands but I think I'd trust a Panasonic ahead of Sony these days.

Of course this is all just opinion. Does anyone have any statistics? Which? magazine maybe?

Will there be more price drops from other retailer to come? - as XP is being phased out due to the release of Windows 7?. It would be good to get a Samsung NC10 at reduced price. I am currently considering the MSI Wind U100 offer from Argos posted here.

A good deal for this netbook but I still feel it's overpriced without having a bigger battery life. The higher resolution screen is definitely worth paying for, but not this much.

With a 6-cell battery this would be a great deal at £300, otherwise its just an OK deal IMO.

How so?

It only came out 2 or 3 months ago.

Exactly. Its also got a superior keyboard and build quality over the other netbooks. Feel more like a scaled down vaio laptop than just a cheap netbook.

I think its a good buy for the money. The battery might not be great, but the screen more than makes up for that IMO.

As I said before, add the netbook slip case to basket to get it over £300, then use the 5300AW voucher code for 5% of a £300+ spend, which brings the total down to £290. Thats cheaper than what they sell for in the USA (at curent exchange rates) or on eBay, so in my mind means its a fantastic deal.

This one has the N280 processor

The NC10 or S10-2 may have better batteries but lack the screen resolution of the vaio.

Translation.

I think its a great deal, so anyone who disagrees is wrong.

Just wow.

Voted cold. I dont think its a good price for the spec,

A) I did not say anyone who disagrees is wrong

B) You can't get the same product cheaper elsewhere.
#25
chave's will never know quality... Let them be happy with their bling bling and samsungs..
#26
i would pay for the name

sad i know

only reason i dont want an acer/asus/hp/dell etc...

'oooooo is that an asus? nice' lol
#27
I don't think the quality of the product is the problem here, it's sony's shocking aftercare in this country. Awful company to deal with if anything goes wrong.

As far as paying this much goes, I'd either wait for an ION netbook or get one of the newer low power dual cores which are between £50 - £100 more than this and a far better prospect for both battery life and overall usage (6+ hours battery life is no problem).

It's a good enough price if you want this netbook, but it's a rubbish price for the spec (apart from the screen which is actually not that great anywhere near a window/outside, so I'm not voting.

WRONG! Go and read up on what the purpose of HUKD website is for. It's not for you to air your grievances and your product dis-loyalty (honestly the Sony haters have to be more annoying than the fans).

Have you found a better deal for this model laptop? No? Then what do you have to contribute here, and why should your cold vote mean anything to anyone?

I would have thought that after 20,000 posts you'd know the point of a deal sharing website.

very cheap only it has xp and a 10.1 inch screen which i dont like so not good 4 me but heat added

I remember paying 650 or 750 quid on a Sony CRT. Just got outside the Gtee and lost its red channel. Althought it was freat whilst working they don't rate highly to me now since that incident.

The reason Sony and VW are not exceptional anymore, is because most of the others caught up with quality. In some cases copied their manufacturing methods until they are very similar, or even use the same suppliers.
It's funny to see people slate VW as not being deserving, as it was just an ordinary car company in Germany competing with Opel and Britain's woeful industry had a lot to do with the high reputation.
#35
Better spec, better components or better price and maybe I would consider it. But not for the name, thats a plain stupid reason to buy it.

I agree with the general thrust of what you say but in the case of VW (and Mercedes for that matter) they've been through a few years where their quality fell considerably. They're now pulling themselves out of that but are still not up with the likes of Toyota and Honda. Arguably more charismatic products than Toyota though!

These comments are based on a large sample of data which the industry collects on a co-operative basis for its own use.

I don't have similar knowledge of Sony but I do know one of the worst TVs I had was a Sony (CRT bought about 5 years ago - first Freeview set I had) and the TV engineer reckoned they were no longer what they used to be. That said I accept that a sample of one proves nothing.

This may have been the case a few years ago, but certainly isn't true now. I bought a Vaio laptop about 2 years ago and after 8 months the DVD burner died. I reported it to Sony, the following day a courier picked it up, it went to France for repair and was back with me, again by courier, within the week. I could track exactly what was happening to the pc through the Sony website and when I checked the paperwork when I got it back they had also upgraded the motherboard and CPU!! Even got a call a couple of weeks later to see if the machine was working well and to ask if I was happy with the service.

Those with a problem always manage to shout louder than those who are happy!!

By the way, I think this is a great deal, particularly when you consider that it was £420 when it first came out - heat added.
#39
Well I'll agree to disagree because I've had shocking service within the last year.. But then it is very rare that I have a problem and it does get resolved.. eventually.

I'd still buy vaio's just not this one as I don't think it represents any sort of value for money when compared to the offerings of Acer, MSI, Samsung or Asus none of which I have heard of having major, if any really, issues with reliability. I have the MSI myself and wouldn't spend a penny over £200 on it an atom based non ION netbook now.

Each to their own though.
#40
Are people really stupid enough to pay this kind of price purely because it is a sony? This is just daft, the NC10 is twice the netbook that this is and i would have voted cold at £240never mind £296.

Freezing cold.
