Gotta love the Sony mp3 players - i've dropped one in a cup of tea and the damn thing still works. Heat from me.

my x series walkman best bit of kit 2 years of flawless use and so easy to transfer avis to + 1 to sony
#6
I almost wish my Sony Walkman had died so I could justify buying one of these!

I can't even remember how old it is (at least four years old) still has an amazing battery life and has seen off several of those new fangled i-pose thingies.

Top kit

Hot hot hot from me

I'm going to try and talk my almost 10 year old into having one of these when he gets in from school (he wants an ipod! lol) Almost every review gives a great score, but does anyone know how you can listen to it without headphones as many reviewers say you can't use it with docking stations?

Thanks in advance from a technophobe mum! :D
#8
You can't use it with an Ipod docking station, but I use mine with a JBL mini speaker - sounds great in the garden!
#9
The sound quality is far superior to the iPods, I have owned Sony's in the past but downgraded to an iPod for the connectivity (mainly music in the car).
#10
If you already have audio input in ur car then cudnt you just use the sony?
#11
Most docking stations come with a 3.5mm standard headphone jack/socket as well as the ipod slot. You should be able to play your music through one if it has, just not charge it at the same time or use a remote control.
Or any set of MP3 speakers would also work well, I still have my Sony player despite mainly using the iphone now. Had it for years and it still works well with great battery life for longer journeys, and sound quality is ...slightly better than my iphone (there I said it) :p

Ordered this in favour of a new shuffle, radio and double the memory plus videos for less money! Anyone know if this has a loudspeaker...long shot i know?

Update...realised it's a bit of a stupid question thanks to previous posts

My daughters both have Walkmen (one of them is this model) and they are both high quality audio, very easy to use (one of them is 5 and manages perfectly well), and excellent value for money.

Most people who do a comparison seem to think Sony is way better than iTat for sound quality and yet the Walkman brand is still in decline. How better illustrated than Sony's lack of docks for its own product, when it will cheerfully manufacture docks to fit iPods. Sony really have dropped the ball, royally. They were the brand leaders, they still make the best product, but they are no longer the brand leaders. How did that happen?!?

Anyhow re the deal. Hot.

Hi, I was going to go for an ipod shuffle just for music to listen to when running, would this be better, I'm a complete technology ignorant, so any advice would be appreciated. My daughters have ipod touches, so they would be in charge of loading the music on it, could they work it?

Have 9 iPod / mp3 players in the family, including 2 x Sony NWZ series. The Sony players are easily the best for sound quality and ease of use. Hot.

Tbh i think one of the problems is the name and lack of marketing to reclaim its status in the marketplace. It was once synonymous with portable audio, but if you tell someone you're listening to your Walkman these days it'll likely conjure up images of a man wearing Dunlop Green Flash and a Global Hypercolor T-Shirt.

Will definitely buy another Walkman if anything ever happens to my current one. Great battery life & sound from such a neat wee mp3 player, what more could you want.

You're dead right, I told someone that one of my kids had had a Walkman for Xmas, they LOL'd, thinking it involved cassette tapes.

Ive had an isheep Pod & iSheep Touch and they are a pain in the ass with iTunes being the most un-user friendly programme ever

ive got the 8gb black one of these and its so easy with this its drag n drop

only small thing is the max volume of 30 is at times not as loud as id like but for kids/yoots thats good as they wont go deaf

For running, no, it's a lot bigger than the shuffle. A good shuffle alternative is the Sansa Clip+. Not much bigger than the shuffle plus it has a display and expandable memory.

It happened because Sony owns record labels, in the early days they hated mp3s because of piracy. By the time Sony caved and released a player iPods were already long established as market leader, furthermore the early Sony models could only play proprietory files and had terrible software.

Tempted to buy one even though i dont need one lol

Does this have expandable memory and would it play flac?
#25

These are the one negative about the Walkmans.... and despite my earlier comment "what more could you want", erm ,yes, expandable memory and flac are the answer to that!

For a similar price, sound quality etc, but also the ability to play flac (and other files) as well as expandable memory:

Sansa Clip+
