Been looking for a decent MP3 for my girlfriend for around £50 for a while. Other than some hard to find clearance bargains on Sandisk models at PCWorld / Currys there has been very little of interest recently, until I found this today.

The player is well over £70 and often more everywhere else and is a genuine improvement over the Nano in many ways.

Benefits:

Great Headphones Included
Compatible With BBC I-Player
Drag And Drop Files
FM Radio
Sony Build and Sound Quality

Add in being around half the price and it is a winner (and has just been ordered).

I would point out that these reviews are based on it being about the same price as a 8GB Nano, which it clearly isn't anymore.

not bad, would be better deal if had wireless headphones

To me they are just another thing draining batteries and reducing sound quality, this is the only one in it's price bracket that even gives decent headphones full stop. Don't think any with wireless headphones have appeared for much less than double this price.

I got one of these when Littlewoods had them a few weeks back.

It's really very good - although you'll want to buy a case as well.

This is superb little player, nevermind "better deal", if it included wireless headphones then it would be one of the hottest deals ever. Lets just be sensible and say that this is a great deal and the supplied headphones that come with these are already some of the best that you get packaged with an personal audio player. Having previously had an iPod there is no comparison in sound quality, these win hands down and need to be seen and heard to appreciate how good they really are.

A bit of me wanted to point out that it would also be better with a free Sony Vaio to connect it to, but I decided that would be a little facetious :whistling:

Great deal there. I am really sick though of the Tescos, Asda, Sainsburys, Currys, PCWorld, etc clearance offers. I have wasted so much time on the phone or driving to stores only to find the holy grail isn't there. Either in Merseyside everyone buys all the rubbish stock before it gets reduced, or far more likely the staff are clued up and clean the place out for their ebay shops. When a Fuji camera was on offer at my local Sainsburys I managed to get a staff member to open the cabinet and make sure there was no stock, low and behold there were still three of them, all reserved for the manager :whistling:

I ended up getting this one - http://www.amazon.co.uk/EASYi-NWZ-S638FB-NWZ-S638FR-NWZ-S638FS-NWZ-S639FB/dp/B001V0V4MG/ref=pd_bxgy_ce_text_b

I think it's more of a choice of which style you prefer, although the good reviews of this one swung it for me.
I have to say it's quite good, protects the player well as it's solid and padded - which is kinda what you want. I'm not saying it's perfect as it make the 'device lock' button a little hard to access, but it's a fiddly button without the case anyway.
Also, it has a small belt clip type thing, which really annoys me as it makes it slightly bigger than in needs to be. Although not much you can do about this as almost all similar cases seem to have these.

Know exactly what you mean, I have been very lucky thus far, also managed to get the cheap tomtom deal from sainsbury's earlier on in the year, and also bought 3 acer aspires from Tesco.

Yep the staff are very clued up, don't blame them i suppose, I would do the same.

It is a little better than the Samsung one in terms of sound quality and included headphones. At £31.64 though that is a great bargain, almost worth ordering just as a spare for exercise, etc.

I've got a Sony A828 which came with wireless headphone, I hardly ever use them, they keep cutting out when you're on the move.
This is an excellent buy.

It is a shame there is none in stock at the moment, as Dabs have these for £39.98 inc vat

Wow, even cheaper! Although i'll probably still go for the black colour.
I was almost going to be buying one of these today in comet for £87.50! Looks like i'll have to just wait a little longer, price difference is huge.

There's a red variant on amazon going at around the same price too. Ordered this one though to upgrade from a Samsung YP-S5J which was a great little mp3 player but 2gb not enough. Glad Sony are sticking to buttons and not this touch screen idiocy. Completely takes me out the moment having to open my eyes and look down to skip a track, fast forward or adjust the volume.
#25
got one of the new x series walkmans truly amazing sound blows my ipods away
#26
is this true windows drag and drop?

does it appear as, say, an E: in my computer and allow you to simply drag mp3s onto it direct or is media player 11 required???

cheers.
#27
Whats the difference between these and the newer model NWZS739FB (except for headphones)?
#28
for what its worth I had a black one until it went wrong (duff battery) and replaced it with a silver one. Although the back is nice I like the silver one. It looks much more metallic, and the silver has a kind of blue hue, and is trimmed in orange metal.

The player is good. menu's excellent, intellisense moods is brilliant, sound excellent.

I got a silicon skin off amazon for a few quid, and that's good too.

Oh and it plays content from BBC iplayer with no fuss.

It is windows drag and drop, I use it on a vista machine and it just recognised it when plugged in, no software loaded. this is true for the iplayer files too, just drag and drop, don't need any converter or driver like on some players.

The 7 at the start of the code just means it comes with noise canceling headphones (good for flying). The 9 at the end means 16GB instead of 8GB. The interface, functionality and sound quality are supposedly identical though

Oh and I have ordered her the Samsung now, she doesn't know a thing about sound quality anyway and the £20 saved will mean an upgrade on the meal out for both of us to enjoy ;-)

Thanks. Ordered Two for my wife and daughter.

Play have the 16GB version of this in red for just £79.99 (plus a tiny amount via Quidco) if, like me, you find 8Gb isn't quite enough. I have the earlier 8GB version and it's great, just can't fit all my music on it.

Was just about to order, but now the MP3 player is shown as ''Dispatched from and sold by Bentham Ltd.''. Is this because amazon has run out of stock?
The price now shows at £49.35.

EDIT: Ah, just noticed I can still add the item from amazon at £52.95 :D

On the right hand side of the page, you should see the option to buy it Via Amazon themselves, for the price quoted.

Personally, I had huge problems with Bentham. They might be o.k. if everything is straightforward, but it took many weeks (including being sent the wrong item in replacement) before I managed to get a faulty item replaced. Customer service was non-existent and only with the intervention of Amazon did things get resolved.

Great price. I have the 16GB version and think that was great value at about £90. Just over £50 for this is a great price, and it comes with some decent headphones which makes a nice change.
