I bought this mp3 player for one feature. It's the first mp3 player to have noise cancelling built in. The only problem is that it only works with the supplied headphones. So it kind of defeats the purpose! So I sent it back. Shame that Sony doesn't make it clear what the built in NC is capable of

After having my iPod Touch for a year, I can't imagine watching videos on less than a 3.5" screen. Not just this, but also I think you should wait and see what apple do on 9.09.09 with the ipod touch.

sony x series looks amazing, bit pricey for me though!

Here is a good alternative;

Beats an ipod nano hands down!

How else do you expect noise cancelling to work?! You need to provide the exact audio noise you hear but in anti-phase (180 degrees out), so you kinda need a mic on your earphones, which isn't all that common

Doesn't surprise me. Sony always try to force you into using their products hence the need to use specially developed sony earphones. Reminds me of when I bought my first mp3 player, the supplied software forced me to store everything as Sonys ATRAC format. Will stay clear of arrogant sony in future.

The whole point of the built in noise canceling is so you don't have to have the huge external dongle which requires separate batteries.

...and of course you're going to have to use the supplied headphones. Like qpan said, no other company makes noise canceling earphones without the noise canceling dongle. Its always permanently attached together.

They could incorporate the mic in the main unit (the player) so one can use any pair of headphones. What's the use of buying a high quality player if you have to listen to all your music through a cheap pair of Sony headphones? What about my Westone IEMs then?

I doubt the new Touch will bring much novelty to the scene, just as the new Iphone is pretty much the same thing with only minor improvements and fixes.

My own Personal choice for an alternative would be http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/431307/samsung-yp-p3-32gb-mp3-player-pre-o It's already been delayed once because play had a problem getting stock in but hopefully it will be out at the end of the month, and it supports divx/xvid files up to 800X600 resolution and it gives out decent sound quality and it has bluetooth.

Sony seem to have learned quite a bit since those days and the software that comes bundled with this is supposed to be much better than their sonicstage. And even at it's worst stages Sony were never a contender compared to Apple's dickishness with proprietary software/hardware the new Ipod shuffle forces you to use the headphones that comes the player because there are no controls on the new shuffle itself but are on the headphone cord and these are cr*ppy apple earbuds. At least with this player it will work with other headphones (even if the noise cancelling won't) and the headphones bundled with it are of a decent spec and worth £40-50 on their own.

Indeed here is a pic of just these headphones without the player http://images.play.com/covers/3317772x.jpg
That dongle bit has been moved inside the X-series player.

another thing that makes this player appealing is the ability for it to work with rss feeds which means that the xcom media server should work with it so you can stream your music from your pc to your player. Though the £65 extra on the price and lack of ability to play avi files are the reasons why I have decided to go for the 32GB samsung YP P3. But waiting for news on spotify's ipod app, which I doubt will go through because it would mean free music and I doubt apple will want a free alternative to itunes on their machine which could mean that service of streaming music could be moved to the X-series If so that would be a real added incentive to get this.

Though word of warning the browser with this is absolute rubbish, it's the same one that's in the PSP, hopefully a firmware update can remedy it.

I doubt they could incorporate the mic into the player since the player will spend most of it's time in your pocket, and judging from the reviews on play.com for the headphones on their own these are a very decent pair and with an RRP of £70 can't exactly call them cheap.

got the 16gb version of this in red and must say the screen is awesome youtube is good browser sux
but the reason why i got this is the sound quality cant believe the diff between this and my iphone/ipods
so much better

got this a couple of weeks ago at this price too, sound quality is the main reason you'd choose sony over anything else. absolutely brilliant bit of kit - and if you have a decent set of earphones you don't even need to use the inbuilt noise cancelling (i use sennheiser cx400 ii - do the job very well)

yes the x-series is pretty much seen as having the best sound quality on the market to date, it has pipped the cowon s9 which previously held the crown, though one thing lacking from the x-series is there is no ability to play lossless files, the hardware is there and it's a shame that it can't be utilized to the full because of the lack of software support. would love to see sony bring in FLAC support in a firmware update.

Just doing some research into sony ericsson's new satio touchscreen phone and they have ditched the netfront browser in that which is the one this product uses, so if sony now have a license for a new type of browser it might make it more of a reality for them to upgrade the one in this through a firmware update.

Update: found this being sold on play.com for £15 more with a free speaker dock worth £120 http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/466903/sony-x-series-32gb-walkman-229-99-w/

play.com comes with free 119.99 dock doesnt it ?
#13
well more like £70 speaker dock since it looks almost identical to sony's SRS-GU10 ipod speaker dock which is selling for that price.
